We have a trip planned for November 2013. I am trying to have everything paid off before we go. Can I purchase tickets now or will they expire before November ? Everything I have seen is that they expire 14 days after the first use- is this correct?

you can buy them now-in fact as prices usually rise about twice a year, you may save by buying now- Undercover tourist has good prices...

That is what I was thinking- I want to do whatever I can to save money

Something to keep in mind is that many of the on-site resort promotions for the past few years have required ticket purchase. Until you know that you won't want one of those promotions, I wouldn't buy tickets yet or else you'll end up having to purchase a second set of tickets. If you'll be definitely staying off site then go ahead and get them any time.

Buy them now. You are correct, they do not expire until you actually use them and get 14 days from first use.

You are better off buying them now and avoiding the price increases that are inevitable. You can buy tickets through Undercover Tourists website. I would also suggest signing up for the mousesavers newsletter. They provide a discount code that will save you an additional $2 per ticket. Not a lot, but better than nothing. The newsletter is issued on the 15th of each month. So if you sign up now, you could get the code on 2/15 and buy your tickets then.

Keep this in mind. Alot of the promotions such as free dining require a package deal. Even so it is often a better buy to get a room discount and your tickets though UT. You might want to run the numbers though.

If you are going to be staying off-property, or will not be purchasing a dining package, you are best off purchasing your tickets as soon as possible.

For several year the general ticket increase was in August; in 2011 and 2012 it was in June.

Unused tickets are valid forever, and, unless the No Expire option is purchased, will expire on the 14th day after they are first run through a WDW turnstile.

For a lot more information about ticketing, follow the link in my signature to the Everything About WDW Tickets locked sticky in the TPA&S Forum. The ticket sticky is your friend.
