Park ticket annual pass questions

We (2 adults) are waiting to buy our AP until we get to WDW. We’re waiting until we get paid one more time. Rest of the family is wanting to get going on fastpass selections.
I realize we’re all really late in making them so I understand the anxiousness the others are feeling.

We can’t participate in making/joining in on fastpass selections unless we have in hand a park ticket is that correct?
If that’s accurate is buying a single day park ticket for each of us good to let us start getting fastpasses?

Is it still true that we can trade in the single day for the AP when we get down to WDW and since we’re DVC members we’d be wanting the good discount on the AP BUT do you think maybe this could get too confusing for the cast members?

~So to repeat the general details
~We’d like to make FP plans
~Will a single day ticket in hand enable us to make FP plans for the entire time we’re there? (10 days)
Will we be able to upgrade to an AP AND get the DVC discount?
I appreciate any and all replies!

A single day ticket will only allow you to make a single day's fastpasses (3 on 1 day, in 1 park only).

You can buy your tickets and upgrade to an AP. You won't lose the value of your tickets. That way you can make your FP+ selections, then upgrade when you get to WDW.

Not sure how many people are traveling, but it is much easier to try and pick up late fast passes for two people as opposed to a larger group.

Also, not sure when you are going, but if you put the tickets on a credit card would that buy you the extra time you need to have the cash on hand to pay when the bill is due?

Lastly, as mentioned above, if you can buy a 4-5 day pass (or more) now at least you can make some selections.

Two suggestions:
  1. Buy 10-day tickets now (or fewer days if $$ is an issue), either direct from Disney or for a discount from an authorized reseller, then upgrade to an AP once you are there.
  2. Alternatively, let the rest of your party book their FP+ now if it's getting close. Then the 2 of you will have to try to match up with the rest, which may or may not be possible, but it will be much easier for 2 to match up with the group than to try and find last-minute FP+ for a larger group.

Enjoy your vacation!
