Park Openning(s) Keeps Getting Pushed Back

It would be very nice if we could take the steps that China took. My 'wishful thinking' does not go past 15 days. I wish that within that time we get the amount of testing that we need, and that the health care pros get the supplies and equipment they need. For now, even sooner than that, I wish for thorough compliance with social distancing as the states and municipalities roll out their mandates.
Sorry, I'm not onboard with welding people into their homes and literally locking them in. If our country would have approached it like South Korea did, we'd be past the worst of it by now~ yet, here we are...

I don’t think it was irresponsible or even unrealistic when Disney initially announced the closure through the end of March. At this moment in time, yes...that’s not going to happen.

This thing went from 0-60 in 0.0001 seconds. I remember March 12. That was the last day of school. After school, we went to see Onward. Between leaving the movies to go to dinner, we got a phone call that school was closed the next day (Friday) and only Friday with an update expected. I told my wife then that they’re probably not going back for the month. By Saturday I said probably not until after spring break. Now I doubt they’ll return at all this year. It went from normal to the world is shutdown within 4 days.

Hindsight is 20/10.
I don't think most folks could mentally wrap their heads around a 4-8+ week shut down. It's easier to adjust with a piecemeal approach. IMO

It is certainly reasonable to view China with some skepticism. But we need to have some separation between the things we know about and the thing we know we don't know about.

We know the following:

On Dec. 31, WHO officials in China were informed of cases of pneumonia of unknown cause that were detected in the central city of Wuhan, where a “novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV)” was identified on Jan. 7, the agency said.

We know we are still learning about the virus.

We know it is a pandemic.

We have reason to believe from practices in Japan, South Korea and China that, for now, the strategy of widespread testing and isolation has yielded positive results. Not just China.

We know that China has the ability to mandate and enforce rules with severity.

We know something about what is happening, in general, on the ground in China. We have many non-Chinese and non-governmental news sources of people on the ground who are able to directly observe the big picture. Yes, the Chinese can keep an isolated secret, but just like with ecological disasters and human rights violations, the big picture is no longer easy to hide. Especially when so many eyes are focused on just that.

So if China tries to muzzle a few doctors, then I know they are ready, willing, and able to do that. But I have no reason to believe that if thousands of people all over China are falling seriously ill or dropping dead, they are able to keep the lid on it. I have two friends who work at a hospital in Beijing. And many of us have more dealings and travel to China than you'd think.

So yes, be skeptical but remain prudent and cautious about the things we know we are dealing with.

Now it comes time to reflect a little bit on how much trust we put in our own government. I wish I could say I have full confidence that the pronouncements that our government officials make adhere to the truth and are absent of malice. But I have abundant reason to believe that is not the case.

Thank you for saying this, I think this is key to how our thinking should be. It is too difficult and perhaps wrong to think beyond what we know to be true. My personal advice is to not devote resources to personal long-term planning. We needed to make major purchases for our children because, surprise, we are back to being a full house, and they needed resources to use right now. They were expensive purchases. We gulped. We also needed to fly them immediately from great distances to be back home. Ack, more money that we could have used for silly things like groceries. But I am not buying any more plane tickets or planning our next vacation.

This is what I have been saying about all the shut downs across the country. Ppl would freak out if it was it was a 3 mon period. So they keep giving smaller increments so ppl have hope. And, who knows, maybe it will end sooner than expected.

Nobody is sure that South Korea or anywhere else is past the worst of it. However, you make a valid point that China has a unique capability to enforce their rules beyond measures that we would normally find acceptable. The question is: how many body bags would we need before we insist that the infected isolate for 15 days?

This tells me that it’s going to be a while which is unfortunate but also expected at this point. If I had to guess....we’re looking at mid-summer/fall now.

If this lasts till October I feel everyone is going to have it and hopefully by flu season next year we will be able to fight it.

I’m think this virus peaks mid May, so by October we should be through that first wave.
I agree for Florida parks as they are just starting to get cases. I can see parks like Cedar Point opening much sooner with only letting pass holders in to start.
