I always get hoppers so I have flexibility. AK never takes me long, typically done by lunch; sooner if EMH that morning. So hopping allows me to go elsewhere at night. When I went in December, it allowed me to visit HS for the lights at night without being stuck there, my least fave park, all day. During my Food and Wine visit, I could spend the day at whatever park and then eat at the Epcot booths at night.
I would never want AK or HS to be the only park I could go to.
But to use hopper effectively, I feel you need to rope drop so you can plow through one park and then be ready for another. Typically I save my fastpasses for park two if I know I plan to hop since rope drop allows for walk ons. If I spontaneously hop, it is nice to know I have the option if I want.
I also don't have to be so stringent with ADRs, i just have to get to the right park in time if I have a reservation. My coworker has to plan her park 180 days out based on her dining plans as she won't pay to hop. That is too rigid for me.
