Parents w/ kids that watch cartoons

I HATE Spongebob. My husband thinks there is nothing wrong with it:confused3 .
I think its rude how they talk to each other, and degrading mostly. When I am here I put on the Disney Channel or Nickoldean in the morning for my 3 1/2 yr old. She still enjoys all the DIsney shows as well as Dora,Diego and those age appropriate shows.

me too! DH just doesn't get it!

My little ones only watch certain cartoons. No Spongebob for them. I really don't know any of the other's you all are talking about. I'm sure as they get older, I'll find out.

What were you all banned from watching when you were younger?

I wasn't allowed to watch the Golden Girls.:rotfl:

This is even funnier....my husband:rotfl2: wasn't allowed to watch:lmao:
the Smurfs!!!:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

That was a piece of information he NEVER should have told me. I used it against him at least once a week!:rotfl:

We don't really watch alot of TV, especially in the summer, but Barney, while not a cartoon, is banned at our house. Oswald. Bunnytown isn't *banned* exactly, but I try to avoid it. I fight the good fight against Yo Gabba Gabba.

As you can see, shows at our house are banned based on Mom's Tolerance Level.

We don't watch Nick or Cartoon Network yet, so no issues with some of the ones being mentioned. Mom's Tolerance Committee will review these programs as they become age appropriate.

I didn't let my oldest watch Spongebob until she was 5, Rugrats until she was 4. It's a bit harder to police what my youngest watches without punishing my oldest. But I do say no to the Proud Parents, iCarly (not a cartoon), Mr. Meat, and the Naked Brothers Band (after their "I Don't Want To Go To School" song).

Hee hee hee
What is "Mr. Meat"
Hee hee hee

[sorry - my mind went straight into the gutter on reading that show name]

My DH's dad didn't let SIL or DH watch Mr. Rodgers - FIL thought he was creeeeepy.

My parents didn't let us watch HBO, but anything on Nickelodeon was allowed [and You Can't Do That on Television was a bit saucy at times, while The Third Eye was scary]. We used to sneak and watch some of the HBO movies when my parents went out. There was some pretty racy stuff in PG movies in the early 80's.

I don't ban anything, especially because *I* just don't like it. If my kids are watching a program, I don't think it matters whether I like it or can tolerate it.

I find the Naked Brothers Band objectionable with the little one being girl-crazy and into tatoos. My kids are old enough to distinguish reality from TV so I don't block it or forbid them to watch it though.

BTW, Mr. Meat is one of the dumbest shows I've ever seen. It's just horrible! My kids hate it too.

spongebob (sorry, i think it's stupid)
fairly oddparents (ditto)
rugrats (that angelica is an obnoxious little potty mouth)
most of the cartoon network stuff (i don't find snot that funny)

DD10 prefers disney channel (kim possible & emperor's new school), pbs kids (cyberchase, maya & miguel & fetch! with ruff ruffman) and boomerang (flinstones, jetsons, scooby doo, batman, etc.). she used to watch jimmy neutron a lot, but they all seem to be reruns now. her new favorite is horseland on koolopolis on sat. mornings.

I posted earlier about watching Boomerang with my daughter, but totally forgot about Kool-opolis on Saturday mornings. She watches Care Bears, Strawberry Shortcake, Horseland and Cake. She loves them all & I'm thrilled with her choices.

She repeated a few of the phrases she picked up from Chowder & I instantly banned it forever. I'd previously changed the channel & simply said, "I don't really like that show." which is much different than a full out official BAN. Unfortunately, they show ads for these horrid cartoons during the sane cartoons AND on Boomerang.

My DS (8) could watch Pokemon all day if it was on. But I pretty much let his watch the shows on Nick, Cartoon Network, Disney. I think the shows on Cartoon Network are just stupid! He would love to have the Boomerang channel but I am not paying extra for that.

My DS doesn't seem to act any different or act out from watching E E & E or some of the other cartoons, he understands that these are just TV shows and we don't act that way. He doesn like Tom & Jerry when it is on Cartoon Network.

My DH LOVES SpongeBob!

I miss the days when my DS favorite show was Blues Clues -

My kids are easily able to seperate tv with their everyday lives.

Whatever you are comfortable with is fine by me but I don't think as a whole what is flashed on a tv screen has that much effect on kids if parents are real involved parenting.
I agree 100%. My kids never actually liked cartoons very much. They would watch the Disney sing along videos over and over. They liked Barney and my oldest daughter loved Binyah Binyah but I never told them they couldn't watch anything. They are 11 and 14 now and they watch Spongebob sometimes, but they're just not into cartoons.

We only get basic-basic cable here (like 15 channels) so I'm not familiar with many of the programs being mentioned.

My kids (ages 6 and 4) watch PBS cartoons/shows, a cartoon called "Dragon", and "Tom and Jerry".

Probably the most controversial shows they watch would be "Tom and Jerry" (violent) and "Cops" (which they watch with Mom and Dad; DB is in law enforcement and we don't see anything wrong with showing the kids the consequences of bad decisions like doing drugs or DUI).

Doodlebops, Calliou, Poo Bahs (or however you spell it), teletubbies and Barney. :scared: ;)

You Can't Do That on Television was a bit saucy at times,

Oh lord does that take me back!:lmao: We didn't have cable (because my parents couldn't afford it) but my grandparents did. I used to LOVE watching You Can't Do that On Television, Belle&Sebastian, David the Gnome, Lost City of Gold, all those great shows they used to have on Nickelodeon when I was a kid. Why can't they have more of that kind of stuff now?:confused3

cinmell--****ahs are really weird. Sometimes I would watch it on PBS in the wee hours of the morning when I would get up to feed DS when he was an infant. That show just really freaked me out..it's like Teletubbies on an acid trip.:hippie:

Those late night/early morning feedings used to expose me to shows that were beyond bizarre. I remember one that was on our local PBS a lot was a show from what looked like the late 70's, early 80's called "E-Con and Me". It was supposed to help teach kids about how the economy worked and featured a really strange and creepy guy who went by the name of E-Con, whom only the kids could see.

What is "Mr. Meat"

I think Mr. Meat is gone now, but it was a very weird show with puppets. (I think it was the same people who did Crank Yankers on Comedy Central).

My kids thought it was stupid.

We don't ban any. Hell, we sit down as a family on Sunday nights and watch Family Guy and American Dad.

That being said, my kids only watch 1 or 2 hours of TV a day. Usually just before nap and just before bed to wind them down.

I think the only cartoon I "ban" is Caillou. That kid is just a whiny brat and I can't stand him! With that said, DS7 watches Nick most of the time, with some Cartoon Network thrown in. He tends to gravitate to the History channel more than anything though...and the Military channel. I blame his Dad. :rotfl2:

We don't watch much of anything on Cartoon Network. Boomerang has some of the good, old shows I used to watch. We do watch Spongebob, but not much else on Nick, either. Mostly Disney shows.

I like Caillou. My kids are too old for it now and thinks it boring.
Whatever happened to:

George Shrinks
Wishbone
Big Comfy Couch

:confused3

DD(5) had to stop watching Back at the Barnyard for a month or so. She kept saying "stupid, stupid, stupid" and knocking herself on the head like they did on the show.

I just told her that she wan't allowed to watch a show if she felt like she had to act like the characters on it. She stopped and hasn't done it again. It was very annoying.

Obviously, it depends on the age, too. My kids, 7 and 8, are soooo over Dora and Nick Jr. stuff. However, they are way too young, in my opinion for Family Guy (cracks me up). Although it is animated, it is raunchier than a lot of regular tv shows!
