I didn't see this posted, so I thought I should post this. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with RoseArt Industries Inc., has issued a voluntary recall of all Magnetix building sets. Go to www.cpsc.gov for the full story.

We have 2 sets of these and they've gotten played with about twice in 3 years because I'm so paranoid about them especially after I heard about the little boy who died after swallowing the magnets and they twisted his intestines and caused his death.

Yeah, I heard about the death after swallowing the magnets as well...then I found one of the polly pockets tiny magnets fell out...those aren't allowed w/my DDs anymore either. I'm glad, for the mostpart, we have the polly stuff/disney dolls that have the rubber clothes now instead of magnets.

We have two of these sets. Even though my daughter is 13 and my son is 6, they will no longer be in our household. I was so sad when I learned that the little boy had died from these. :sad1:

We have this at home and my son was just playing with them this week.

The little magnets fall out of it all the time - guess the whole thing is going in the garbage. I was more worried about him swallowing the metal balls.

I'm so glad to hear this! I work at a Children's hospital and we get several calls a week from parents whose kids have swallowed these little magnets. Several of them have had to be bronchoscoped(tube down the lung) to retrieve the magnets.

They were not designed for kids still eating their toys.

I guess everybody should toss anything with a magnet that could fall out.

Just wanted to say thanks for the heads up on this one...DD got some for Christmas..

Really? Please don't misunderstand, I have nothing but respect for your wanting to protect your children. But I have to ask - do you think your kids, at their ages, are going to eat these? Because that is the only way that these things are dangerous.

I personally feel it's a shame that they were recalled. For a long time I've thought that it was a really little ingenius toy.

There is A TON of stuff in this world that is dangerous - deadly even - to little children if swallowed. This is not news. We're not removing the bleach bottles and toothpicks from our homes. We're being responsible about it.

true, but they market these particular toys to the Preschool crowd frequently. Everybody always assumes that 3 is the cutoff age for won't put it in your mouth, but MANY kids are still very oral well into their Grade School years.

I looked at these over Christmas when they had the huge sales going on and was kind of shocked at how many small parts there were. I didn't buy them because my son still does frequently mouth his toys.

Does anyone know what the packaging says about recommended ages?

ETA:
Ok - found it on a web site and the manufacture recommends 3 years and up.

Ok, they should offer refunds to anyone that wants one. They change the recommended age on the package. But they should NOT stop selling this toy.

ITA. Mass hysteria.

We have tons of them at our house -- never had any problem with magnets falling out, but like others have mentioned, they've not been eaten at all either. DS1 isn't allowed to play with them when DS2 is around either -- but that goes for any toy right now with small parts. :)

Who knows why kids do what they do, but we sent a 10yo in last night who was tossing it up & catching it in his mouth...oops! Off to the OR with him :rolleyes1

Toy makers can't regulate stupidity -- that's not a flaw in the toy's design, but rather a flaw in common sense. :)

My children know better than to put toys in their mouth. I understand what you are saying. I'm not one to go around removing everything from my home that is potentially dangerous, but for some reason this just really scares me. Honestly, I thought it was a pretty cool toy myself.

Personally I believe the toy was always marketted correctly. Most three year olds can undertand don't put it in your mouth, we'll take it away if you do.

While some grade schoolers do chew on their Chewbacca, that certainly is not a problem. Chewing and swallowing his gun is so that's why they are not for smaller children.

If they are going to take this toy off the market because a kid can swallow it then I have no idea how that will not apply to any toy small enough to be swallowed.

We saw this on the news and my 8 year old son said "some kid ate one and now everyone loses."

That is just it. Whenever there is a tragedy fear and panic take over from calm decision making. Everyone wind up losing.

I am so thankful I wasn't raised with fear, but with common sense. You can't stop all accidents. Pure and simple.
