Parents of the High School Class of 2017/College 2021

Awesome for him! So, he'll be in Nevada for 3-6 months and then go somewhere else

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you :).

Well, she did buy a tee-shirt that she's wearing right now. So, that's a good sign.
Yes, he wanted to go home for a few months (he really wants to ski and duck hunt), his bucket list includes Colorado, Montana and Wyoming (hunting season) His Girlfriends list includes Idaho, Alaska and Maine! They are off on a grand adventure.

We went to accepted students day at Northeastern today- it was great- we went to 2 break out sessions, one for the business college she is going to and the other global studies-VERY informative. After that stopped and bought some northeastern merchandise. From there we went to "Huskyfest" where they had food and booths set up with all the different schools within the university, financial aid, study abroad and a bunch of other information booths. You got to talk to the people one on one with your questions and then we went and toured a couple different dorms. So we are sending in our deposit when we go home- Go Huskies!! So glad we came this weekend-getting all the info and questions answered really sealed the deal.
Congrats, so nice to have the decision done and over!

DD is making her tri-fold photo displays. She has one laid out and mostly stuck down but ran out of double sided tape. She is planning on doing two. Now for photos of the two girls at the tables, we are thinking of getting some picks from the florist (like they stick the cards in but use them to stick the photos in) and putting them in decorated jars.

Yesterday was music solo/ensemble contest. I played piano for my girls' duet and they got a I rating. It was a fun day watching kids from school. My girls were in a few other groups that got I's and II's as well.
The center piece photo displays sound awesome. The floral sticks are a great idea

It's great that they can do this together. I hope after all that travel they find someplace that they love. So many people just stick with the familiar, I think it's awesome that they are trying out so many places.

We are STILL waiting to hear back from Temple regarding our scholarship appeal:( Its been since Feb 28th!! If we don't get good news soon I will be booking a trip to visit FSU for late next week. Hoping for Temple!!!:cheer2::cheer2::cheer2:

We are still waiting for financial aid appeal but they said it could take until the summer so we sent in our deposit last night and are hoping for the best! If it doesnt increase we will just deal with it.

DD's collage just announced they are opening a Starbucks on campus in the fall. DD is over the moon.

Crossing my fingers, every penny helps!

We have had a very tumultuous weekend with lots of reflection and conversation along with a few tears.
We had a heart to heart with DD as there was something I was beginning to suspect that she confirmed.
She is not ready to head off to college, by only choosing very expensive schools she put herself into a position of possibly not being able to go.

By choosing Hofstra, it gave her access to NYC which is where she would like to intern/shadow a chef. She viewed college as a means to her adventure not wanting to consider the costs.

Once we all realized this (sometimes us parents can be a bit slow) we took a deep breath and listened to what DD wanted. She is going to take a gap year. She wants to shadow/intern a chef as she really thinks culinary is in her future AND she is going to go off and travel a bit via WWOOF (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms). I honestly had no idea she wanted to do this but I guess in retrospect, we have been so college focused that we didn't hear or see this. Fortunately we have connections in a few major cities to help aid in housing while she pursues an internship in culinary and we have a very close family friend who is very high up in the industry who can help her in this endeavor. We bought her a membership for WWOOF Hawaii and she is planning a few months in the islands on various farms.

We are going to revisit college applications in the fall for the fall of 2018 with a completely different mindset, seeking schools that are a good fit, offer her what she is looking for and where her stats will help offset some of the costs.
We maintain that no matter what she does, we will not support a decision that will leave her with major debt at such a young age.

The whole house slept much better last night.

We have our deposits down at both schools. But if the scholarship appeal doesn't come through I think she is gonna choose FSU:( She was sooo set on Temple for so long I really thought she was only considering Temple. Waiting on eggshells...

Oh no, I hope you hear good news soon. I asked GW to take a look at our financial situation again because dd should get grant money based on our 2017 numbers. It's still doable for us but it would be nice to get a little more $.

Thanks everyone for your likes and nice comments. We're pretty excited. I hope everyone has a great outcome.

I am so happy for you and your DD! Going to college right out of high school is not for everyone and it's better that kids realize that before they go off somewhere. I looked up WWOOF and it looked like a wonderful resource. We belonged to an organic a CSA (Community Shared Agriculture) program through Harmony Valley Farm in Viroqua, WI. It appears that it's a member of WWOOF :). It looks like she has a wonderful adventure in store for her!

You daughter sounds so awesome! It's quite rare to find a hs senior who knows exactly what they want to do and how to do it. Best of luck to her and your family!
