Parents of the High School Class of 2017/College 2021

Can I brag about my Non High Schooler for a moment
My DS is a Physical Therapist, he has been out of school and working for a little over a year. His "dream" was to enter into a traveling program and set off to see the country in the 3-6 month increments that travelers are placed.

He has been working here in Austin, TX for the past 15 months to gain experience etc.
Over the last 6 months he has been laying the ground work, he purchased a truck and a 5th wheel so he could have his home on wheels and hit the road.
His current contract expired last week and he was seeking to finally set off.

Yesterday he received an offer that will take him back to the area he grew up in, Northern Nevada (near Lake Tahoe). He is soooo excited, its a great offer and he is leaving in two weeks.
I'm so excited for him and so sad at the same time. By late August we will have a completely empty nest with the kids 2000 miles away in opposite directions.

Congrats to your DS! It must feel a bit weird to know both of your kids are leaving the nest soon!

How do you feel about the small liberal arts schools? I was a bit leery of a school the same size as DD's high school but DD loves them.
Most of the schools DD looked at were small liberal arts schools. However, her high school is very small, I think about 60 in her graduating class, so even a small college will feel big to her!

Last night he moved his bed out of his room, he put his couch in there so now I have a nice TV room where I can have my own space but it made me sad although I am so excited to see him fulfill his dreams.
This whole child rearing thing is such a bucket of mixed emotions.

I see that, LOL hope she makes a decision soon and finds her new school home

We don't buy stoles or cords either. Kids get them at various award ceremonies at the end of the year. Cap decorating isn't allowed, which I'm glad about. That would be too hard to control IMO.

We don't buy anything either. NHS students wear stoles that need to be returned (kind of a pain in the neck), and the cords are just given to them with their caps and gowns.

I am pretty sure that caps can be decorated, but neither of my older two decorated their high school caps. I don't know if my youngest will or not. My daughter did decorate her college graduation cap, though. I cried when I saw it.

Congrats to your ds! My friend's daughter is an Occupational Therapist has been doing a traveling program for almost a year. She loves it!

For some reason, it hit me hard today that we won't have any children at home soon. Even though I'll always be a mother, I won't be a "mom" on a daily basis anymore.

I've still got a couple of boys at home that are up for grabs! J/K!

My DH cant remember but he said he had $38 on a gift card and he had enough for a dole whip float with some left over. He had the hat embroidered with her name on the back.
Thanks so much!
Well, shoot. I can't be sure how much the grad ears are after all. I checked the gift card to see how much was left on it so I could subtract the almost $6 off it for for the Dole Whip float. There was $28 left. My DH claims he used the gift card but that doesn't make sense. So ... I don't know how much the ears were after all (although it appears they were nearly free for us o_O).

I found a note in my phone from September that just said "Slow Down - Nichole Nordeman" and couldn't remember what it meant. I Googled it, and it's a song that has me in tears. I still don't remember when I heard it or that I put the note into my phone.

More somewhat crappy news for us. DD just heard back from University of Minnesota Twin Cities. Apparently they received 42,000 (!) applications for incoming freshmen to fill only 4,700 spots. Last year they had 46,000 applications for 6,600 spots. She was placed on an extended waitlist just like at Wisconsin. Both say they will get back to us by min-June.

We are leaving soon for lovely Amea, IA to visit Iowa State. Keep your fingers crossed that she loves it!

How are you supposed to chose a meal plan? I am so confused!

Oh robin, I'm sorry it wasn't the news your DD was hoping for! Big hugs to you all!

I hope that Iowa State will be the perfect place and she loves it! :flower3:

I'm sorry, Robin. Waitlists suck. We know exactly how it feels.

How are you supposed to chose a meal plan? I am so confused!

As a mom of a college sophomore, who transferred from one school to another at the end of Freshman year, what we did at his first school, was to pick the most comprehensive plan for 1st semester (with all the transitions, etc, I did not want him worrying about stretching meal points, or card swipes, etc). We scaled it back for 2nd semester, once he figured out his usage and needs. (Sleeping in on weekends does not lend itself to eating 3 meals in the dining hall).

At his current school, he plays on the men's soccer team, so we once again loaded him up, as he's practicing 2 hours/day 5 days a week in the Fall, does team lifting over the winter, and then spring practices have just started up. He's on the 2nd highest plan here, but with more 'extra dining dollars' than at his first school, and we top that off for him every month or so, so he can grab something on the run if he's going straight from class to practice to the library, etc.
