Parents of the High School Class of 2017/College 2021

Good day of tennis yesterday. DS1 (senior, and his partner is a senior) won district in men's doubles. DS3 (freshman) won men's singles!!!!!
DS2 baseball team won an important district game so everyone was happy in our house last night.
Congratulations! Tennis season is my favorite time of year for school activities.

My DH was in tampa doing some things for his mom and his AP was burning a hole in his pocket. Lookie what he got DD!

Hey robinb, could you tell me how much the grad ears cost if you don't mind. DD will be in WDW next week, and I want to give her a big enough gift card to cover the graduation ears.

We've made our decision and sent in our deposit. However, dd still hasn't heard from UMass Amherst. It wasn't a first choice, rather an "extra". She knows someone who called the admissions office and asked when they would hear. The reply was it would take until MAY to release all the responses. What a crock. Nearly every collage requires a deposit by May 1st. It sounds like a big scam to me. Get tons of people to pay the application fee and keep their money without fair notice. :sad2:

Well I thought I got off easy with buying the cap and gown- it was free if you bought a class ring, just had to pay 7.50 for the tassel. Well until today LOL- just got a letter from school saying for the National Honor Society Stole that the honor society kids wear over the robe I have to send in 24.00- then a letter from Science Dept came- she is a Science Olympiad so they wear science Olympiad stoles over their robe- just have to send in another 24.00- I sure hope there are no extra stoles for Foreign Language Honor society or Math and Science Honor Society or Music and Art honor society or I am going to be sending in check after check!

DD's cap/gown/tassel came home with her a couple of weeks ago. It was free because the class had money left over from prom- not sure what they do about NHS- maybe they keep some at the school to reuse each year.

She's thinking about how to decorate the cap. The current plan that I like is a Rapunzel theme with the words "On to my new dream". I don't know how well paint will work or if she should design it on paper and stick it down. She is known as the Disney and artsy kid at school so it's perfect.

DD15 realized on the way home tonight that her sister graduates Next Month and she got teary. We were talking about how our weekends are nearly booked till graduation:
  • Solo/ensemble contest
  • Easter
  • Prom
  • Free weekend! So far...
  • Nephew's confirmation out of state
  • Grad reception
  • State Track & Grad Ceremony
  • Memorial Day Weekend- will try not to plan anything!
Track is going well so far. I think I mentioned the indoor meet. She's had two outdoor meets now and hasn't placed lower than 3rd (and the 3rd was just once). Less than a second from the school record in 200 which is probably going to be harder to overcome than it sounds...but by end of season and warmer weather maybe? Last night was senior night at the only home meet so we got to walk out and be introduced with her.

My DH cant remember but he said he had $38 on a gift card and he had enough for a dole whip float with some left over. He had the hat embroidered with her name on the back.

Well, now I'm worried. We were not told anything about buying an NHS stole. I assumed the school provided those like they provide the cords. I'll be calling the office in the morning.

Glad the decision was made! That is ridiculous waiting to send out decisions until May.

Well, the deposit is in! Our son will be attending Ithaca College this fall to study film. So excited for him!

Congrats!

What a wonderful problem to have.

So glad we aren't allowed to decorate the caps, one less thing I have to do., but I love the quote! Good luck with track, I hope breaks that record.

We did not have to buy stoles or cords. Here, NHS stoles are presented at the NHS night (Induction for new members and honoring of graduating seniors). My nephew will get his tonight. Top 10% cords are presented at the Top 10% banquet.

Thats's good to know. The school hasn't been very good at communicating these things to us

Yay on a decision - that is a huge relief at this poing.
UMass's response is just dumb since decisions everywhere else need to be made by 5/1. Ugh
I "think" that there is some sort of mandate regarding the 5/1 deadline that has something to do with the Federal loan's the schools can offer. I don't remember the details but a friend of mine who works at a university in admissions mentioned it to me awhile back in conversation.

Ouch, that could be a lot of $24 checks - When DS graduated all the cords/stoles were supplied by the school/clubs where they were earned.

Well wishes continue for a great track season.
No idea if our kids can decorate, I'll have to ask DD - I know for DS it was a no.
Ohhh your poor DD, that's a tough one. Our son went to college on DD's 10th birthday (her B-day was freshman move in day)
I remember when we got home that DH and I had the conversation that the almost 10 year age gap was great 10 years prior but now DD's housemate was leaving. It was hard for a few days but DD settled into the role of "only" child quite easily. It remained that way until her brother returned home 5 year later to attend grad school, she was then 15 and realized she had to share a bathroom - her reactions were comical

We attended an Accepted Students event hosted by Hofstra here in Austin, TX last night. This event cemented for me that Hofstra is the best overall fit for DD and I think she will thrive there.
I'm off to pay out all the various deposits and orientation fee's.

So happy to hear that! Did you meet a lot of families at the event? Just wondering, since DS will be attending a similar event in Austin for his university soon. I'd love for him to meet some kids and start building relationships.

We spent most of the time speaking with the Admissions adviser and Student Ambassador, There were only 7 kids in attendance and DD chitty chatted with one but that was about it. She takes awhile to warm up socially in a group so she migrated where she was comfortable, to the Admission Adviser whom she met when she visited the campus.
I was surprised that this small NY school held this kind of event.
Your Son's should be fun, it will be interesting to see how many from the area will be heading there

We don't buy stoles or cords either. Kids get them at various award ceremonies at the end of the year. Cap decorating isn't allowed, which I'm glad about. That would be too hard to control IMO.

Can I brag about my Non High Schooler for a moment
My DS is a Physical Therapist, he has been out of school and working for a little over a year. His "dream" was to enter into a traveling program and set off to see the country in the 3-6 month increments that travelers are placed.

He has been working here in Austin, TX for the past 15 months to gain experience etc.
Over the last 6 months he has been laying the ground work, he purchased a truck and a 5th wheel so he could have his home on wheels and hit the road.
His current contract expired last week and he was seeking to finally set off.

Yesterday he received an offer that will take him back to the area he grew up in, Northern Nevada (near Lake Tahoe). He is soooo excited, its a great offer and he is leaving in two weeks.
I'm so excited for him and so sad at the same time. By late August we will have a completely empty nest with the kids 2000 miles away in opposite directions.

We are planning to go to some accepted student days at the schools DD got into. Hopefully that will help her choose! We're going to Bates tomorrow, which she loved when she visited in the fall. Here's hoping she still loves it!
How do you feel about the small liberal arts schools? I was a bit leery of a school the same size as DD's high school but DD loves them.
