Parents of the High School Class of 2017/College 2021

We are STILL waiting to hear back from Temple about my DD's scholarship appeal letter, sent on Feb 28th. We did hear back from Temple's Fox Business School today saying her ACT score of 33 earns her a spot in their Fox Business Honors Program:) So hoping since they allowed the late score for that MAYBE they will allow the late score for the scholarship appeal and up that too:groom:

Honors is great, hope they fork over some more scholarship or award $$$$!

We received a response on our appeal letter to Hofstra, DD was granted an additional $2K per year
Tuition/Fee's is $44k annually - they have given her $32K in Awards, Grants and Scholarships. The housing is an additional $15K - this is the big kicker due to their NYC/Long Island location.
Overall we are pretty pleased with the total outcome. We have spoken with finance and admissions, for years 2-4 she will be a resident aid (She wants to do this and with her Girlscout experience, she would be good at it) anyway, that will knock another $10K off as she will be given housing.

Hi, new to the boards here, and an anxious mom to a Senior. Our dd has been counting the days left since school started this year.
I am sad and proud all at once. And dreading the empty bedroom to come.
Our school had a strike so the kids have to go through mid June, making graduation the same weekend as Fathers Day...oh the scheduling nightmare that is for a venue and caterer.

That is hard that the school year was extended! We don't graduate until the weekend after Father's Day weekend, but at least we knew that all along.

Yay!! You must be so thrilled she made her choice! I'm sure she will be very happy at Marquette. Did she plan a big reveal for you?

We are very happy a choice has been made! She's comfortable with her decision and we think it's a great fit for her.

It was a reveal of sorts... DD and her BFF went on a shopping spree as you can see!!
The photo is what our DD laid out late Saturday night in the living room after DH and I went to bed. She also wrote us a very sweet note explaining her choice.

We are now a Golden Eagle family!!

Aww, that's sweet. Congratulations!

DD's best friend got an email from her waitlisted school "we have great news to share with you, please call us at your earliest convience". Told both girls that can only mean she's off the waitlist, and if that's not it, DD will not be allowed to apply there.

My DH was in tampa doing some things for his mom and his AP was burning a hole in his pocket. Lookie what he got DD!

One school sent a letter that my child was accepted into honors program. Letter was dateda month ago and said there were scholarships but had to sign up or something by 2 days after we got the letter. Whats the honor program and what are pros and cons of it? Does it look better on your record? Are classes harder? Whats expected in these courses?

Was this a school that he/she already applied to? Requiring registration in the program within two days sounds pretty off. Are you sure you are reading the information correctly? Honors programs differ between schools. I recommend that your senior go to the school's website and look for information there or call the admissions office to find out who he/she can speak to in order to find more information.

For many (certainly not all) honors programs, honors means you get first pick of classes-so a freshman honors student can choose a class over a non-honors senior. There is often honors housing so students who prefer a quieter dorm may prefer honors dorms. I believe there is a honors distinction on the diploma, not sure if it gets you anything or not. Honors students often have additional requirements over regular students-community service, a couple honors classes....I think it's a worthwhile thing to be involved. For my ds, a senior at SUNY Buffalo, being in honros also meant he has the regular class, plus a smaller class called recitation. He learned pretty quickly that the regular (very large) class was not where the material was learned. He preferred to go to the recitation (much smaller class, more involvement, better teaching) over the regular class.

Hope this helps!

You really need to call admissions and ask. Without even knowing the school no one can give you specific information. Every school my daughter applied to has an honors program/college and each one is a little different. Some automatically consider students others you had to apply to. Some seemed interesting and others not so much. Only one actually conferred a separate diploma. All schools my daughter applied to have large lecture classes with separate small breakout/recitation classes for all students not just honors.

Call admissions.

That's awesome! What a great surprise to wake up to Sunday morning :)

My daughter is a bit bummed about her 18th birthday- all her friends have been having surprise 18th birthday parties and regular parties and when she turns 18 they will all be scattered around the US at various schools. I am hoping by her birthday she will have made some good friends in college to celebrate with-she has 3 months in college before she turns 18 so there is a chance!

The boys had multiple school activities on their birthday, we just had a "breakfast party" with us. I said "First lesson in being an adult, no time for birthdays anymore."

That is great. Have you asked the Honors school if they know when or if general scholarship appeals are considered? They might have some insight.

Congrats!!!!!!

Good day of tennis yesterday. DS1 (senior, and his partner is a senior) won district in men's doubles. DS3 (freshman) won men's singles!!!!!
DS2 baseball team won an important district game so everyone was happy in our house last night.

Well my daughter emailed the director of admissions at Temple about the scholarship appeal that we sent in Feb 28th. She got an email back saying they are still reviewing the appeals and hope to have decisions sent out in the next week or so?!?!?!:headache: I swear they have no idea what they are doing to people!!! She wants to visit FSU for accepted students day on Apr 21, leaves for California to compete in DECA nationals on Apr 26 and has to make decision by May 1st. It's been well over a month now can we please get an answer so we can move on with our everyday lives?!?!
