Parents of the High School Class of 2017/College 2021

Sadly, DS was right. Denied at Brown, Vanderbilt, and Columbia. He got into NYU, but not enough $. So, it's down to 2, Boston College and UMass Amherst. I know he will be fine at either but rejection stings.

Same here- she was waitlisted at NYU and Tufts and denied at Columbia and Brown- she knew she wasn't getting into Columbia but she said the Brown one hurt! Oh well- guess I am booking our airfare for next week to accepted students day at Northeastern! I am going to pick her up some Northeastern "gear" while we are there! Our Valedictorian was also rejected at Columbia, Barnard, Brown, Harvard, Johns Hopkins and Cornell- crazy you can be class valedictorian and still have to deal with all those rejections! Not talking about a tiny class either- she is top of almost 400 kids!

DD got into her 1st choice - GW in DC. They gave her a nice merit scholarship which makes it doable but only because she's our only.

She's going to take a few days to decide for sure.

I'm sorry for those waitlisted or rejected. I hope for a decision that everyone is happy with.
Congrats!

Whoo hoo! Congrats to your DD! It's good to hear some good news today. DD was rejected from Brown. She was prepared and expecting it but it still stings a little.
I'm sorry

I am sorry. I can tell you, she is in good company. Six students from DS' class applied, 6 rejections. In fact, there were no Ivy acceptances in a group of pretty incredible kids who all met the criteria and then some.
I was reading something last night on the acceptance rates this year for the Ivy's - they range from 5-10%

My daughter may be going to FSU also...STILL waiting to hear back on our scholarship appeal letter from Temple:sad1: we have been waiting for more than a month!!!!
Good luck, we are still waiting on ours to Hofstra as well

DS got waitlisted for Berkeley, his number one, yesterday. He already opted in. Still holding out a bit of hope, but is going commit to his #2 this weekend.
Yay! I'm so excited for him, hoping, praying etc for him to get bumped to accepted! DD was denied which was not a surprise to anyone

Our Valedictorian was rejected to MIT, Berkeley and Princeton. Meanwhile, there were several Ivy acceptances to kids in DD's Nerd Herd:
Summary of My DD's social group whom I've dubbed the Nerd Herd :) They are all auto admits to either Texas A&M or Univ. Texas Austin, that is their backup plan.
Student#1 - Yes to Berkeley and NYU, no to Columbia & MIT
Student#2 - Yes to Harvard, Northwestern and Rice, No to Cornell & MIT - still waiting to hear from Stanford
Valedictorian: Student#3 - No to Berkeley, Princeton & MIT, still waiting to hear from Stanford

All of these kids are in the top 10% and most are ranked in the top 10 out of almost 500. All are IB students and still, when you look at the yes/no's the brain says this does not make sense but this just reinforces my opinion that getting into these schools is a crap shoot

Thanks to everyone for their thoughts. If misery loves company, it is good to know that amazing kids all across the country are not getting in to these schools. I will let DS know. (Although I really wish it wasn't so hard!) We were floored that our Valedictorian (not DS) was turned down by all the 'elite' schools.
Anyway, I need to take a good look at the financial aid packages for Boston College and UMass. DS is definitely leaning towards Boston College. I think the school is actually a better match for him than the ones he was denied at, but I need to make sure it is doable before I give him the go ahead. The only thing he doesn't like about it is how close it is to home (25 miles away). He is having a little remorse that he didn't apply to more match schools that are out of state. I, on the other hand, like that he won't be so far away, lol. We live in a very small town and I think he's just frustrated with small town life where everyone knows your business and thinks he has to go far away to escape that. I told him that neither BC or UMass will feel like our rinky, dinky, town.

In other news, he got a summer job, yay! The last two summers he worked at Scout Camp for 7 weeks, but wanted to spend the last summer before college at home. We are a seaside community and the population swells during the summer. He will be working in the kitchen of a local, very popular restaurant that is only open seasonally.

Oh, and DD14 has decided she no longer eats meat. She is officially a pescatarian. We knew it was coming sooner or later. So, now I live with 2 meat lovers, one who won't eat meat, and then me who could care less either way. Should make for some interesting dinners.

Is your DS going to live on Campus at the local close to home school? My DS wanted to "go away" so he went 8 miles to the dorm, while it was not a road trip or plane ride away he still got his going away experience and really enjoyed his college years.

My DD works at a girl scout camp - 7 weeks, she is on the kitchen staff - she loves it as she always looks forward to getting away from us old folks o_O

Oh I feel for you with your eater! My DD has been a pescatarian, a vegetarian and a vegan - these food jaunts of hers drive me nuts. The Vegetarian which I dubbed carbatarian lasted the longest (about 7 months) and the vegan was very short lived (couple of weeks). We finally got to the point that we did not go out of our way to feed her, she put her requests on the grocery list and if we went to dinner where "she couldn't eat" that was her problem not ours. We did discover than many restaurants have vegetarian options even if its the kids menu mac & cheese.

I'm sorry your dd didn't get in to brown. We were up at accepted students day at northeastern last weekend. If you haven’t been on campus or checked out the area it's good for that. Otherwise, I wasn't very impressed with the program. We ended up not staying until the end.

We were there last month but we are going to go back because we have appointment the next day with her advisor there and also with financial aid and global studies. Plus we visited 5 colleges in 2 days when we were there so they all started to mesh into one by the end so she just wanted to go and make sure she remembers which was which LOL.

He will live there. Even though it is only 25 miles away, the route is high traffic as it is on the other side of the city. It can take anywhere from 45 min. to 1 1/2 hours+ to get there depending on the time of day.

LOL about the carbatarian. That used to be DD when she was younger. She's gotten really good about eaten veggies now. She is an intensive ballet dancer and realized that her eating habits were not conducive to her dance habits. Now she's all about the healthy eating.

I don't think there is an official word for what we are but we only eat white meat chicken--- no fish, pork or any type of meat. I stopped eating meat when I was around 8 years old and my daughter never really liked meat- I would make her fish and meat but she never really liked it and eventually stopped eating it before she was 8.

Congratulations to everyone on their acceptances! I find this thread fascinating and I have learned so much. My kids are not college aged yet, but this is a great way to get up to speed on what is going on with applying to college, FAFSA, etc.

Has anyone on here been in a position to take advantage of the WICHE / WUE tuition agreement in the western states? I first learned about this when we lived in Hawaii, and now we live in Colorado, but I never hear anyone talk about it. As this is something we could potentially utilize, I’m wondering if anyone here has first hand experience. I am aware that not all majors qualify for the reduced tuition. Youngest, of course, wants to go back and attend University of Hawaii!

DD was waitlisted at NYU. She's glad it wasn't an outright rejection but it amounts to the same thing. She has to pick between two midwestern universities now. She was here hoping to get out of the middle of the country!

Anyone have info/experience with shipping a car to college? Thinking shipping would be better than the cross-country drive and wear and tear.

My mom shipped her car from Florida to nj. I can find out the company she used. I think it was a national company.

It was easy. She was in Florida when it was taken and it was delivered to our house in nj. You'd have to just check what age the person has,to be to accept delivery. My daughter will still be a minor when college starts.

Thank you! I would love to know the name of the company she used. We plan to be there when the car arrives, so we can make sure all is well. We'll plan it around move-in to the university.

Let us know what the counselor says. I'll suggest the same to my DD after we hear from UMN. Just when I think she's passed on UMN she goes and wears her UMN Goldie (Golden Gopher) tee to school .

The counselor couldn't really offer too much info on waitlists. He said there's no predictability at all. The waitlists are not ranked, so once the schools figure out how many (if any) spots they'll fill from the waitlist, then they sift through looking for the kids who are what they're looking for to complete the class. What they're looking for varies, could be a sport, musical talent, a particular major, etc. DD knows her chances are slim - an undecided middle class girl from the northeast probably doesn't have much of a chance to stand out (her waitlist schools are all in New England), but she's going to give it a shot at 3 of them.

He said to write/email each school to let them know how much she likes them. Every school is different as to whether they want you to send additional grades, recommendations, etc,. Also, he said if there's one school that she loves above the others (since DD is dealing with 3) that she should say in her letter that she'd definitely commit to going there if she got in.

DD looked at several out of state options in WICHE states, but most don't participate in the program, and at the one that does she got a scholarship offer that was a better deal than the WUE tuition rate. That's the extent of our first hand knowledge.

My niece used a WUE agreement her first 2 years. But she ended up having medical problems and had to take a break for diagnosis, surgeries, chemo, etc. While that's certainly not something any college student wants to deal with, she was able to establish residency during the gap time she took for medical treatments, and that was better for her financially for her last 2 years. As I understand it she couldn't have used the time on the WUE program toward establishing residency without the gap time.
