Parents of the High School Class of 2017/College 2021

DD got home from the SAT and thinks she did worse than when she took it cold last Spring. And this is after a $600 prep class and multiple practice tests. We'll see what she scores. She said the non calculator math section was hard. She estimates she guessed on 10 out of the 20. Could be exaggerating though. She also said there was an "extra" reading section. Not sure what the "extra" section was all about, experimental testing maybe?

Right now she is off getting her make up done at the mall. The Homecoming Dance is tonight. A friend is coming over to help her with her hair after that. Her date was crowned Homecoming King at last night's game!

My DD said that SAT was easier than the ACT because she had more time. She did say that the math was harder on the SAT which is the opposite of what I've heard. She also said the "metal math" was hard. Right now I have chosen not to send scores anywhere. I think I'll wait and gladly pay if the scores are good.

My DD took her SATs today too. Said they were "okay, I guess". LOL She took the old format once and the new one back in May so this is her third time. Just had 6 weeks of tutoring so hoping and praying for any jump in scores. If not she is fine with her last score. Would just be nice to get a little extra merit money:) Especially since we will then have two in college and the third starts the following year!!:rotfl:

Visited a private college today on a track & field day. They invited her since she was a medalist at State Track. She didn't think she wanted to continue on in college track but we checked it out. She didn't like it at all so it's off the list. It just confirmed her preference for the community college. I did compare the class lists for Graphic Design between the community college and the state school we visited. Both degrees have the exact same number of credits in graphic design classes, so basically for the bachelor degree we would be paying for filler like Western Civilization and Ceramics. CC is looking like the winner at the moment and decide later whether to complete bachelor's or not. We still have two more visits planned. She's debating on whether to cancel one that's farther from home.

As far as FAFSA, all I got done today was obtain my FSA ID. Still need to get hers but she is gone tonight so we'll do it soon and then fill it out within the next week.

That's cool!

The max I believe is 7 weeks. Following the May tests my DD took, most of the kids started checking online about week 4, it was not until the end of week 6 that College Board notified us that the test sheets had been lost and at that time something was mentioned about the 7 week period.

The CC's Graphic Design program is 5-6 semesters, so we checked with the academic advisor on how they fit that in- is it 2 years or 3 years...the GD students do summer semester between years 1 and 2, and potentially the next summer semester. That's great she can still get it done in two calendar years (and just two 12 month leases at the apartment), but that means she won't be home summers after this next one. We wanted to do Disney in 2018 and I hate to think of her not going. She will have some breaks of course, but Christmas is busy, spring break is tax season for me, May is soccer season for DD15, and August is Family Camp. She won't want to miss camp (very glad there is a break during that week). Plus she may have a job up there. This growing up stuff is getting very real here!

What is the CSS? I have one child already in college and have never heard of it??

It's a supplement to FAFSA used by private colleges and universities. It'd much more indepth, asking for about 4x the information as fafsa.

We don't qualify for need based aid. Is that why I didn't have to fill that out with my older daughter? Just curious why I never heard of it

Does anyone know when we can expect scores back from this test?

I have read 3-4 weeks, longer for writing. The boys felt the test was easier, but they said the non-calculator math was more difficult.

I see there is a charge to send the CSS to schools. Does the finished PROFILE tell you something? Our FASFA EFC was astonishingly high so I'm not even sure if I should waste my time on the CSS.

These kids idea of "fun" sure is not mine! My daughter is retaking the entire AP bio course for "fun"- she loved the class in 9th grade so she is retaking it this year for fun...

That's so odd. At our school students would not be able to retake a course they took and passed before.

Not just used by private colleges. DS's state university requires it too. You can't get any financial aid or merit aid without filling it out, and it is long...12 pages long!

Huh, never heard of it. Can someone tell me what CSS stands for?

I have no idea what CSS stands for but you can access it from college board.

As,someone above said it's used for merit aid as well financial aid. My daughter is a strong candidate for significant merit aid at several schools so we don't have an option of filling it out

My son found out that got into two schools today! He's so excited! Even though these are not his 1st choice schools, he's still thrilled. He can now relax and know that he's going SOMEWHERE next year.... The anxiety of not getting in anywhere is now gone. So now he has 4 more to hear from...
