Parents of the Class of 2019

Hope the roads are okay for your swim meet! Hard to think about going swimming when it's single digits here :cold: We're scared of skiing but tubing is fun...

DD has decided not to do soccer this year. She has group and individual speech contest (acting and musical theater), choir ensemble contest, and starting today, voice lessons, so you can see she has decided where her priorities lie. I can't say I'm disappointed. It will be super nice not to have to split up the family for two different sports this spring. We can all watch DD18's senior track season.

They swim inside, at least for the most part, they did have practices at an athletic club over the holidays that they had to swim outside for practices, but the pool was heated, and if the temperatures were supposed to be too cold, they didn't swim. We ended up with really nice weather over the whole holiday break, just to come back and have a snow day the first week back! What's funny is at the meet they had on Tuesday, all of the girls who were here over the break and swam were all tan because they'd been swimming every day outside! It was sort of strange seeing DD with a tan in her suit because she's been face down in the water :rotfl:

Also still working on driving - in fact, DD failed her drivers test last week. She actually did pretty well on the driving part (aside from failing to use her signal once), but lost a ton of points in the pre drive part - couldn't turn on headlights (we have them set to auto), dim/bright the lights, turn on the wipers, or the defroster LOL. Was a good learning experience for her though. :)

Her younger sister will thank her when she knows to find out where those things are before taking her own test. ;) That first test in a generation is always a rough one.

Good luck as you continue to move forward with this. We had a snow day today and I took my DD out driving in the snow today. For now at least, she finally gets why I don't want her driving to school in iffy weather.

Good note to self to make sure I show her where all of those switches are on the car before she goes for a test. I don't think we've gone over any of those with her yet either.

Our boys took the test just a few years ago and we forgot to cover all those switches too! Thankfully she got enough on her own to pass.

We need to do this. With her older sister too, really. We haven't had snow to speak of this winter, but we had ice starting Sunday. I guess with working, the only time we could have gone out was in the dark, so we'll wait for some weekend snow someday. I did have her fill my vehicle with gas on Sunday which she had only done maybe once before.

They missed two days of school for ice, so starting 2nd semester today. She came into town yesterday so she could have some speech practices at my mom's house with her groups. They're almost ready for Saturday.

DD will most likely be going to prom so she has done some dress shopping. Unfortunately she tried on one that is "perfect" but $629 so other dresses are just not measuring up to that standard now. We're checking out FB swaps, Dillard's, and considering trying one from China on Amazon...

Mid-terms going on this week for my son. I feel bad for him, because I'm pretty sure he's coming down with the flu, but he kind of has to survive one more day and then has a long weekend to recover (they're off Thursday afternoon and all Friday).

First set of college letters started coming in this week - I assume that the PSAT scores have been released and colleges have a bunch of addresses from that, since other friends of ours (different schools) have mentioned the same letters from the same schools.

Don't you watch "Say Yes to the Dress"? Everyone knows you can't try on the budget busting gown! :p

We need to get out and start looking for something for Court Warming.

We tried ordering from China last year and it didn't go well. From here on, just things she can try on in person.

LOL, no we don't have any cable TV. And I didn't expect her to fall in love with it, we were just seeing what she liked as she hasn't been asked yet (but we know through friends and DD18 that one boy is planning to ask, and if he should decide not to, his best friend that took her to Homecoming wants to).

I have previously sworn off China dresses after doing it for DD18's Homecoming dress. The quality was fine, but it was too tight around the arms/shoulders and my mom couldn't fix it. She wore it and suffered through. BUT, DD15 has a more typical body shape and the dresses have good reviews. So I may be swayed. She's trying on a dress from FB swap on Sunday, so if that works out we won't worry about it. Swap is one way to get a dress cheaper, but you also end up driving a distance to try on only one dress so I hate to run all over the countryside too. Everything at the prom shops is $400 or more it seems, so then our only other option where she can try on is Dillards.

Shoot I hope he feels good enough to get through.

DD took the ACT last year to see how she'd do, so she's been getting some college mail for a while. I just throw it away!

We have been ordering white dresses from Nordstrom and LuLu for a sweet 16 party (the court is wearing white), free shipping, free returns. Dd has grown a lot lately, but she still barely fits into an xs, so she can only shop at places we can return. She does have a maybe, so she'll wear it if nothing in the next batch works.

Good luck! DD is small too. We started in the 2's at the prom/bridal shop and she wasn't filling them out on top. And she's 5'1" so hemming is a given. At one point I joked that we should ask where the flower girl dresses were. The "perfect" one was a 0. But I think they are vanity sized a little bit because at Kohl's for a church dress, for example, she would probably wear a 3. Another advantage for the China dress is that we can ask for it to be made shorter and possibly avoid my mom having to hem a dress, if they get it right

Dd is up to 5'2 1/2", and up to 95 pounds, and a lot of dresses fit "wrong." Her "maybe" is flowy, so it works.

Hey everyone, I can't remember if I joined already or not! Anyway my oldest DD is class of 2019 too, she is 15 for a few more weeks! We are registering for classes for next year this week. I can't believe how fast this is going!

DD is more like 115 pounds, she has some curves, and it seems like nearly every cute dress she finds fits and looks good...a blessing and a curse (on my wallet). So much easier than DD18 who has a long torso and wide shoulders.

If it is your first post here, welcome! :flower:

As DD put it when January 1 came around, "Next year, I'll be a senior!" Yes, next calendar year she will start her senior year but I told her to stop it!

I just saw this thread and decided to jump in as well. I've read the more recent posts but not the whole thread.

I have a sophomore DD as well. Like others, she is getting her first college letters. Of course nothing that has piqued her interest yet.

She has completed the classroom portion of drivers Ed and had her first driving lesson, 5 more to go.

In general, she has matured a lot over the last year, still a kid though.

She dreams of studying piano in college. I think she has the talent, but is not sure where it can take her. However, I have decided to support her decision. And I am trying to position people in her life that can help her to see where this choice can lead. She has started giving piano lessons and is enjoying it, especially getting paid.

She is planning next year's schedule and is struggling with whether or not to continue in orchestra. She plays viola in the concert orchestra (the highest at her school). But, she is not enjoying it like she used to.

She says she wants o take a visual arts class and then digital photography instead. I'm ok with that. It is an entirely new interest for her, and dropping out of orchestra will not prohibit her from pursuing piano if she continues with that desire.

In 8th grade I quit band because I didn't want to do marching band and I promised my mom I would spend more time on piano. I can say that piano has done more for me than the saxophone ever would have. I got a music minor (and accounting major). I loved my pipe organ lessons! I taught piano for a while, and I've played organ at church since I was 14. I don't know what jobs are out there for piano majors, but good luck to her!

My DD dreams of being a musical theater major. I haven't decided if I support that decision yet :rolleyes1
