parents of college students - feedback, please

I am surprised your court system did not have some thing like that in place on just the simple possibility a person just could not make the date that was scheduled.

Believe it or not, this was his SECOND summons!!! The first one he was able to get postponed, and THIS was the one he HAD to serve.

wow, i'm shocked that they would make him go during school. i would have gone in there and told them that if they were willing to pay my tuition for the semester to miss class, then i would gladly be there for jury duty. i can't believe they made him miss class which caused him to have to repeat a class! that's horrible of them!

EXACTLY :thumbsup2 There is enough other people in this world that can step in and take someone's place until that person can PERFORM THEIR CIVIC DUTY TO GOD AND COUNTRY....(whatever)....!!!

Just does not seem to make much sense to me at all :sad2:

My husband graduated last May-part time 3 classes a week since he worked full time.
He took off a week every semester and he did fine...more than fine. he just got the notes from a classmate. If he had a paper due, he turned it in early.

I don't think you need to be there for every single class in college, not at all!

In my senior year, I was absent from my Russian class nine times; two more than allowed by the Professor. Although I passed the class academically, I was flunked for excessive absences, and by diploma was revoked. I had to pay for another semester, just to take this one class over in order to graduate.

So I would say that missing class, even at the college level, is a big deal.

I agree.

I graduated college in the fall of 1999 and there is no way in heck I would have done this. Sorry, but this is college, not kindegarten. Furthermore, having good attendance can be quite an asset. Example: I had to take behavioral stats for my major. I hate this kind of thing because I'm not good at it. I had perfect attendence in this class.

We had 5 tests, including the final, in this class. I got a B, B, B, B, A, and I got an A in the class. Now you tell me attendance wasn't a good idea?? :)

I teach at a College in Massachusetts and I am not allowed to penalize a student for jury duty. It is an excused absence. At my College there is a difference between excused (jury duty, doctors note) and unexcused (you don't really feel like going) I have kids take off all the time. They only get one unexcused absence. Excused is a different thing. They are usually required to attend a makeup class. (Each class I teach only meets one day a week) The only problem I think you may encounter is in the classes that may require hands on work as in a lab.

I am scared of these places where one absence affects your letter grade. Even when I was in college I didn't go to every class. If your child is diligent in finding out what he has missed he will probably be fine. And will have a great trip to tell everyone about.

There is a difference between your Dh taking off and one one of my boys missing a week to hit Vegas :thumbsup2

With your SIGNATURE, I am going to guess EMERSON????

Another thing I forgot to mention is attendance can affect borderline grades.

If you are right on the cusp of two grades and you attend every class the professer is more likely to bump you up then if you miss classes.

Yup. That's it.

I KNEW IT. I had a very good friend, in 1976 that went and graduated from EC and her degree was actually in COSTUME DESIGN and she went on to NYC to work on Broadway and is still there today.

I would go to watch her in the basement of one of the EC buildings and be absolutely amazed at the TALENT of these young students making these fabulous costumes. AMAZING. SUCH TALENT!!!

NICE TO MEET YOU!!! :sunny:

I'm in my senior year of college and have missed classes to go to Disney. I went in October and February and missed about two days of each class.
I get mostly A's and a couple of B's and I'm graduating early. I've had no problems keeping up with my classes and when I miss a couple of days, I get notes from another student.

I go to a large state university where the ages range from 17-60 something. I don't know of any student who makes it to every single class.

I think it really matters what year the student is in you may be able to miss a few freshman level sociology or psych type lecture classes and be ok but when you are a senior and in smaller classes with the same profs you may not be able to. I know when I was a sr in nursing my dad was having serious surgery and I wanted to leave early to go home and was told my patients depended on me they same as if I was working and if I could cover my self maybe but if not I had to go to my patients homes (community health rotation) and do my job or be graded accordingly. How could I find another student who knew my patients at the last minute and could go do their wounds, so I missed my Dads surgery and couldn't leave till the next morning. They treat you as adults in college and expect you to act and accept the consequences like adults. So if they can miss and keep up go ahead but if they don't keep up will they be happy with a lower grade. You have so much time off in college I would think it would be pretty easy to schedule around breaks.

I know if we have a trip planned it consciously makes me go to school everyday. Kids in my college miss classes all the time and for whatever reason still seem to do as well as me who went everyday. As long as they know they are going then they can make sure they are there every other single class the rest of the semester.

And think about it this way, kids miss classes all the time for sports trips and organization trips so as long as they aren't super involved, I can't see it as a problem.

Too, depending on the type of class, they could have a friend take a recorder and tape the lectures. That way they are up to date on what happened, they just weren't there.

As a current college student, missing even one day of class is HELL!
I had to be on med leave for a week my freshman year and as a junior it is still affecting me!

Thank you all for your replies!

Seems to be about equally divided between those who think we should vs. those who think we shouldn't!

I especially appreciate current students' posts (and on the college board). DH and i have degrees (and MBAs) but its been awhile ;) and now with kids, this is all new to us again. As i said, i wanted your take before i mentioned it.

Also, we do travel extensively throughout the year, every year, including summers and college breaks. This trip would be in addition to that.

Not sure what will be decided, but thank you all very much!

DISers ROCKS!
