Parents of College Class of 2018 (A.K.A., "Is this the line to the poor house?")

That's great that your DS was able to enjoy the comfort of his own bedroom for a few days. I'm sure he doesn't take a soft bed and some TV time for granted. Is he still pretty certain he is going to leaves the Corps?

My DD is in Chemestry, too. I feel your pain hearing about all of the work -- pre lab and post-lab write-ups every week. DD still has a class exam mid-week and the class final to go in this final push. She's taking an optional practice exam tomorrow evening, so that kind of makes it 3 tests for the lecture class within the next 7 school days. Thankfully the lab is finished. Organic Chemistry looms in her future. :scared: I'll be thinking of your DD. I wish her the best on her final exam.

Yes, he is 100% certain he does not want to participate in the Corps after this year. It's much more time consuming than he thought it would be. I think he had no idea what he was getting into when he signed up. Oh well. At least he is being taught discipline and good habits.

I feel for the kids who have chemistry or advanced math classes and have to study for those finals. That must be very stressful. They have to work extra hard. My son said his roommate is always studying.

Yeah. I'm feeling for my son who will have finals in 2 weeks in Organic Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Differential Equations and Physics. Better him than me. :faint:

Good lord!!! My dd doesn't have any of that, she doesn't even have to take math in college thanks to AP classes, and I think it got her out of science too. But, she is majoring in film production and will probably be sharing an apt with 6 other people her whole life LOL.

Believe it or not, he's just thrilled he had enough AP/Dual Credit to not have to take an English class in college! :lmao:

LOL!!!! My dd is minoring in Creative Writing. Clearly our kids have nothing in common :rotfl2:

Our other son is a whiz at history, English and social studies. I have always told them that between the 2 of them, they are a really great student! :p

My daughter is a whiz at math and science too, she just can't stand them LOL.

I think that's the way it goes. My son excels in English, history, and social studies. He's getting an A in Arabic. Just don't ask him to do an advanced math problem.

He used to go for extra help in Calculus at school. The teacher would have the kids work out a problem on the board. My son spent a good amount of time working out some huge problem. He then asked the teacher if it was right. She said it was wrong. Instead of trying again, he just erased the entire problem and sat down.:rotfl:

And this was my dd's status update this afternoon :rotfl2:

Nothing says "film student" like shooting in a sketchy hotel room on a Friday afternoon.

Funny finals story: DD shows up for one of her finals. She starts taking the final and it dawns on her that this is for the wrong class. The TA sent her the wrong email. She waits for the prof to come in, who happens to be her advisor, and she goes up and explains what happened. He chuckled and told her to finish the exam just for fun and see how she does (she has this class next semester). She finishes it and gets an A lol He said, well you won't have a problem next semester, just don't tell Prof X you passed the final without the class lol She went back 2 hours later for her real test and she did just as well.

Now chem was a different story, she said it was just an awful test but she is sure she got at least a C. She was so sick to her stomach over this test. When I picked her up after, it was her last final, she looked like a homeless kid. She was a mess! She said all she could think about was this test all week. We went back to the hotel, she took a shower and I pampered her with a trip to uptown with dinner and shopping at the cute shops. It broke my heart to see her :( But she has perked since being home today! Next semester has classes she has been looking forward to with profs she knows.

Hope everyone has a great winter break!!!

Bittybabygrower, it sounds like your daughter will do well in that class.
I am sorry to hear that she was so upset about her chemistry final. My son said that some of the engineering students he knows are really struggling. They have to take some very difficult courses.

My son got home today and he doesn't have to go back until Jan 12th. He goes back early for his Army group. I think the month off will be good for him. He had a lot going on his first semester and it was a huge adjustment from his high school days. He seems in a much better mood now than he was a week ago. I think all of the kids could use this break to de-stress.

DD had her last final Friday morning, came home in the afternoon and left 3 hours later to spend the night with a friend who is home from Texas Tech. When she got home today she was just pooped! She checked her grades this morning and so far she has a 4.0. The only grade not posted yet is psych, and she feels pretty certain she has a strong A in that class.

Bittybabygrower, does your DD have to take anymore chemestry? That is great that she feels she passed the class! I hope you both can have some fun together! My DD is already worried about chem next semester. She had to sign up for a professor who has very low ratings on http://ratemyprofessor.com where students urge the reader to not take take from this instructor. The professor DD wants to take requires instructor permission. DD is 10th on the wait list and the class is full now at 50 students, so it's doubtful she will get in, even though she tried to get in when the class was only 55% full!

DD and I are going Christmas shopping and to lunch tomorrow also at a place called "uptown" for some girl time. She leaves in 2 weeks to spend 10 days with her boyfriend who lives 1000 miles away. Classes start again on Jan 12th. My DH is also going back to college for 3 semesters for post MA work to become a school principal, so there will be two in college for a while!

She has organic chemistry yet, but she knows to avoid this prof now. The upperclassmen told her who to pick lol

We are headed for lunch and Tuba Christmas today. She slept 10 hours and looks like a new girl today!

Hope everyone has fun with their kiddies!

My DD got home Friday in time to bring me lunch. She had a great first semester. All grades aren't posted yet but she is expecting 4 A's and 1 B.

Bluestars- My DD's boyfriend is at A&M so she was there last weekend visiting and one thing she mentioned was the Corps and how impressive they are. So tell your DS that while it's been tough, others are impressed by their dedication, precision, and commitment.

Happy holidays everyone! Enjoy your kids!

Thanks Skimom. I will let him know. I was there for one of the football games and watched them march in. It was very impressive. There is so much work that goes into being a member of the Corps and it's nice to hear people say they are appreciated. :)

It sounds like your daughter had a great first semester!

I hope everybody has a wonderful time with their kids during their break. I love having my son home and talking about all of his experiences. He seems so much older than when he left for college.

I can't wait to have mine home! He'll be home Wednesday. He has his last final, chemistry, this morning. He said he will be soooooo glad to have chem done and behind him, lol. He's much more of a physics guy, and really didn't like his chem professor anyway. He has liked his other engineering classes, but really struggled with this one.

It was neat, though -- The other day, one of the student groups had the local animal shelter bring over puppies and kittens for the frazzled students to snuggle and de-stress with before finals. I thought that was very cool. And then last night the Aggie Moms put on "midnight munchies", where they set up tables and tables of yummy stuff for the students to take and eat while they were doing 11th-hour studying. I couldn't be there for that since I had to be at work early this morning, but from the pics it looked like everyone enjoyed it!

His plan is to work as many hours as possible during the break so he can go back with a little more fun money than he had this semester. He also needs to have a couple of cavities filled, so we'll schedule that too. But all of that can wait until after I have hugged him silly.

Hope everyone has a great break with their kids!!

Finals "officially" begins today at our daughter's college, but she had all but one of her final exams last week, so we get to go pick her up this evening. :thumbsup2

I was informed by ds that he and his roommates/suitemates have a countdown till they go back in January.
I guess he reallllly loves being at school!

Apparently this is common as I mentioned it to another mom who said her dd had one.

My dd and her roommate don't have a countdown that I know of, but I know she and her friends miss each other alot and chat via group Facebook message while they are at home.
She has one final today and one Wed, then she will come home in the afternoon. I can't wait!!!! But when she goes home in January it's going to be like August all over again. She will go home on a Sunday and Tuesday is her birthday, it will be her first birthday not at home. Makes me sad already.
She had one of her short films from her first semester chosen to be shown among 11 others in a film showcase on Friday, so that was pretty darn awesome for her first semester!!
