Parents of College Class of 2018 (A.K.A., "Is this the line to the poor house?")

She didn't check until after she went to bed, then sent me a text LOL.

So what was her reaction??



TAMUG finally opened up the housing application for Fall 2014, and we got that submitted on Tuesday. Last night at like 10pm DS emailed the resident life folks to put in a request to be in one of the new dorms that he fell in love with. (The whole reason he wanted to get that app in as soon as it became available.)

They're real weird about dorm requests, for some reason -- they make a big deal about how much more important the roommate is than the dorm, yadda yadda. We get it. There's not even a place to make a dorm request on the housing app. And when he emailed them a couple of months ago to ask about his chances as a Freshman of getting into the new dorm and wondering when he should apply, he got a big long speech back about how unimportant the space is compared to the roommate, but also to apply as soon as possible.

Gah, we get it! Anyways, he got a reply back in 4 minutes -- from the same director of reslife who gave him the speech the first time! -- saying that while it's not 100% guaranteed, his was the first housing app for next Fall and "his chances are VERY GOOD" that he'll get into one of those two twin new dorms. An admissions counselor we met with last visit told us that only "a few" Freshmen got into the new dorms last year, so DS went to sleep very happy last night. Now if the admissions people would just hurry up and start accepting these kids!

I've just never heard of a school seriously discouraging people from requesting a specific dorm... Is that common??

So my daughter who has so far refused to do any thinking about where to apply or what campuses to visit came to me last night and said, "I've decided to apply to Rensselaer (my DH went there) because I looked at the college board website and my SATs are good enough that I'll probably get in AND they have a quidditch team called the Rememberalls"



So now I know the important critera: the college she attends must have a quidditch team.

It's going to be a very long year around here.

I was happy that at least she looked at a website (finally). DH told her she shouldn't bother to apply there because she's not smart enough. Just what I need...she finally at least thinks about SOMETHING and he shoots her down.

Sigh.

Awesome for him, and from a few dorms I've seen, yes, space is VERY important!!

Ha, my dd has pointed out which schools have Quidditch teams as well, now I can't remember if the school she chose has one or not.
That's terrible to tell someone they aren't smart enough. At least let them try!!

I happened to stumble upon a video of Humans vs Zombies (don't even remember how I found it). Apparently this was started at Goucher a few years back. Anyway, we are big Walking Dead fans so DD was excited that it would be "nice" if the school she chose had this. I googled and found out that Stockton's Honors Program does this. Oh, and color guard would be "nice". Well Stockton doesn't even have a football team, let alone a marching band, so I conceded that one. Can't win 'em all.

I was *just* fixing to post that when the quidditch thing came up... As much as my son loves TAMUG and the Aggie traditions and the island life, I think the two things that really sealed the deal for him were the Humans vs. Zombies league, and the intramural dodgeball team, LOL. Hey, I'm not going to judge him -- I already told him I will be there pretending to be a student so I can do HvZ!!

I do not see Quidditch on the list of student organizations , but I do see Paranormal Society !
I remember now, our tour guide said he joined because he wanted the t-shirt, but chickened out before he got one !!

OMG, what school is this? This is everything my daughter would absolutely LOVE!!!! Huge 80's fan, loves paranormal stuff. Do they have a marching band and Humans vs Zombies? If they have marine science I think I might have to have DD submit an app!

Things are not going well here in regards to choosing colleges. My son hasn't looked at any on line, has not worked on anything college related.

My husband and I talked with him about what we can afford to cover and let him know we are excited for his future.

He is scheduled to take the SAT for the 2nd time in early October. One of his AP classes has been discussing the college essay process with the classes.

Unfortunately the 2 of his teachers who said they'd give him reference letters that he has dealt with for the last 3 years in the Robotics Club and computer classes have left the school and we have no way of knowing where they went. So now he has no references for college apps.

I really want him get off his duff and get to work. I'm starting to stress about it and I'm not the one going to college!

You are not alone. Mine is working on an application today, only because it's part of a homework assignment for her English class. That's really unfortunate about the teachers leaving without your son being able to get the letters of reference before they left. Maybe the guidance counselor has some contact information for them and can contact them on behalf of your son?

That's what I'm hoping can happen but my son has to be the one to initiate contact with the GC and he hasn't done that.

Oh and don't get me started on the Parent Brag sheet. I was handed a piece of paper with a bunch of questions at the end of the school senior parent meeting last week and told the GC needed it back the next day! I was pretty ticked off.
No explanation as to what it was to be used for, no suggestions on the type of info they were looking for.

I just today found out what was supposed to be on it by reading this thread and of course it was turned in to the GC last week.

We are so clueless with this college stuff, it's frustrating.

Take a deep breathe, GaSleepingBeautyFan.

You can rewrite the Brag Sheet, and then resubmit it. It's unlikely they have done much with it in the last week. Think about each high school year and what he did that year--and don't forget community service and organizations outside of school.

Someone has contact information for those teachers. IMHO, you could track that down. Contact the school and explain the situation. If nothing else, check Facebook. Our D is friends with several (now past) high school teachers on Facebook. At least you would have a chance to reach out. You might check Linked In as well. Or the phone book...

It's an exciting, but challenging time. You will need a lot of deep breathes to get through it, but you will get through it. I know, I've been there, done that. D is a happy college sophmore...

OMG, this is us...but factor in that he wants to play his sport in college. At least in his English class they are teaching them how to write college essays. At times I wonder if my marriage is going to survive this because we don't ever argue, but we sure are arguing about this! (And my son has no clue I'm sure He's just rolling through Senior year like this )
