Parents of College Class of 2018 (A.K.A., "Is this the line to the poor house?")

Hi everyone! I just found this thread, so I have a lot of catching up to do!

My DS 17 will start his senior year in September. He is my oldest so the senior year/college experience is new to us! Looking forward to sharing this journey with my fellow DISers!

Congrats, Gina.

That's an amazing score. That with a decent GPA is automatic excellent Fin Aid at Univ of Alabama for one (honors program, wonderful dorms, etc). Worth a look!

From the Univ of Alabama website:
PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLAR

An out-of-state first-time freshman student who meets the December 1st scholarship priority deadline, has a 32-36 ACT or 1400-1600 SAT score [critical reading and math scores only] and at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA will be selected as a Presidential Scholar and will receive the value of out-of-state tuition* for four years.

Thanks! Yeah, I had read about that program at UofA, but his degree is only offered at only a handful of schools -- and TAMUG is such a completely perfect fit for him personality/location/career-goal-wise. I'm just really hoping we'll be able to get some more $$ out of them! Now hopefully since he finally had a day off today, he's at home working at least some on his app essays... I reminded him this morning that July starts next week -- that gives him a month before he applies and he has 3 essays to write.

And we had talked about OOS schools, but neither of us can envision that at all. It has been just he & I since he was 2, and we're a pretty tight team -- he has a life, and I have a life, but we genuinely enjoy doing stuff together too. I'm looking forward to just being able to pop over the Causeway and have dinner with him or something once in a while. Or possible try and masquerade as a college student for the annual Humans vs. Zombies competition. :thumbsup2

And forgot to say, welcome momto3gr8boys, sbtrfly74, and anyone else I might have missed!! :welcome:

sbtrfly74 You will use the 2013 income for the Fall 2013 college admit. You will need to get your taxes done ASAP. If you have substantial 1098 income you can estimate and revise. See the book "Paying for College without Going Broke" for detailed instructions. Our public library has several copies (it's revised annually) or buy it for about $16 or so. Worth every penny.

Thank you, thats what I figured but I didnt have to file a FASFA for DD20 and havent filled one out since I did mine back in 2008 and didnt qualify financially but did it anyways.

The biggest thing Im worried about now (and have been meaning to call our State University advisor and ask) but when I went to the orientation for duel enrollment, the community college said that the college credits will look better than rank. My daughter was 10th (person not %) last year and now top 24th but she will loose rank period.

I really dont believe thats true but either way she knows that she will be going to CC for 2 years unless she gets scholarships. Not that we cant afford it but Ive watched my Dsis spend over 100k between loans and apartment for her son to attend a UB to be an architect and he just graduated with a history degree. I will not nor let my kids go into debt over college.

Oops, typo.

If your student is going to college beginning in the Fall 2014, you fill out the FASFA asap after January 1,2014. You use the income from 2013.

I hope that's clear, and helpful.

I'm curious about how many credits your junior has and if having a large difference will help or hurt them when applying.

My daughter homeschooled until 8th grade, however she started taking high school classes in 6th grade at a private homeschool place, and I taught her classes. When I enrolled her into high school they skipped her 9th grade. She just finished 11th and got her grades. She has 29.5 credits and only needed 24 to graduate. They told her last year that she had missed one required class gov/economics (she did take a gov class but they counted it as elective and not as a core class) and if she took it this past year she would be required to graduate. She chose to put that one class off as she was already graduating 1 year early and wasn't ready to go off to college.

Anyway when she graduates next year she will end up having 12.5 credits over required. I've had people telling me that a few extra is fine, but having that many may hurt her on college applications. I can't possibly understand why. Does anyone know any more about this? How can graduating a year early and still have 12.5 extra credits hurt her? Not like they were filler classes. Only filler class she has taken was a pottery class last year that she loved. Rest have been maths, sciences (mainly sciences), and other academic courses.

We've been on a much needed family vacation then home getting DD packed up and off to Thespian Festival. She is home next week then off the following week to Joffrey's Ballet West Intensive for 3 weeks. We start school in mid August so I am already lamenting that the summer is half over. There is a mini college fair at the Thespian Festival and DD is learning about a bunch of schools she knows nothing about. If she comes home with any information I will gladly share it. She auditioned today for several schools and received several callbacks. I am only familiar with two of the schools, the rest I had not heard off.

How is everyone else doing with college visits?

We have done one more college visit, Loyola Marymount in LA, CA. I liked it, DD thought it was a bit small for her (10,000) students but thinks she may apply anyway. She did like that they had a strong community service aspect to the school. I liked that they had adult advisor/nondenominational ministers in the dorms who were there for students if they needed them. DD thought this was too much like the advisors at her high school. She really wants a big school with some anonymity since she went to a small high school. The school has a nice feel with many programs and seems to truly take a holistic approach to admissions. They are Jesuit and do require two religion classes and two philosophy classes but there were many offerings. My husband asked the tour guide if she had any Jesuit professors and she said no. The religious aspect is low key to nonexistent unless a student wants it. If anyone has questions about the tour, please ask and I will try and answer.

We are so relieved over here... DS was shooting for a 29 or better on the ACT which would according to the conversion charts then be better than his SAT score, and he ended up with a 34. I could have cried. I am hoping upon hope that we can use it as a bargaining chip for some sort of boost in merit aid. Every dollar will count!!

Sorry, I swear I'm not trying to sound all braggy -- this is just a huge relief for us. I'm hoping it helps us some, $$-wise!

Congrats Gina! that is great. A little bragging is fine, we are all proud of our kids and it's nice that we can share here and not feel competitive.

And forgot to say, welcome momto3gr8boys, sbtrfly74, and anyone else I might have missed!! :welcome:

I second the welcome!!!!

Does anyone know about schools especially in Florida, or North Carolina or other southern states.
DD's ideal school is around 25,000 students, a University, offers undergraduate BA or minors in Dance, Theatre, and Business. Has a Greek Life option, strong school spirit and is located in or near a city. We would love suggestions. We have exhausted the LA area which she believes is her first choice.

Hope everyone's summer is enjoyable. We are getting much less done on the college planning and ACT review then I had hoped but I keep telling myself there are 10 days in August before school starts...maybe then. It's going to be a really busy fall.

.

My DD17 is also a ballet dancer. After several years of Summer Intensives and productions, she decided last year that she didn't want to pursue dance as a career and wanted to travel and go to regular camp in the Summer. DH and I agreed that this was wise as the high cost of Summer dance study didn't really make sense if she wasn't going to pursue dance. She still studies ballet at our local ballet 12-15 hours a week and will take classes there this Summer when she's home and do their August intensive. She decided not to join the Preprofessional level there since it would have increased her study to 6 days a week.

Good luck to your DD as she auditions for schools. That increases the college decision stress level.

Good to see so very many others in the same boat! :)

My DS just turned 17 this week and lots of unknowns where he will end up going the following year. His sister (my oldest) starts at University of Florida this fall, so LOTS of college years ahead. Youngest DS starts HS this fall. Changes abound!

I dont know the exact number of credits DD has just she has everything required except 4th English. They did make a mistake on her transcript and counted one of her classes as an elective when it should have been considered a core class. Think it was her IT course but dont remember but I had it fixed.

I have no clue why/how extra credits would hurt her, Ive just always looked at it as they have what they need to graduate and only other considerations were if they took Honors or AP courses. But I dont know.

Strange question: does anyone else's school mail their report cards after school lets out? My daughter got out on June 19 and I'm still waiting for a final report card. I'm sure it's been like this in the past, but this is getting ridiculous with everything taking so long. Maybe if they didn't schedule final exams through June 14, they might have had report cards ready on June 19.

Our school doesnt' mail them at all, they are only available online. Finals are the last 2 days of school, school ended on a Thursday, I believe they were ready by middle of the following week.

Yes ours does too, last day of school was June 18 and I received their report cards in the mail yesterday. The last day of exams was June 17th! But the week before that was all exams too so their last day of classes was June 7th.

Ours doesn't mail them either, they are on line. I am surprised that many of you are just now getting out of school. We got out May 24!

My dd's last day was June 6 and we just got hers in the mail yesterday. She did say a week or so ago she saw them online, but I didn't even look. She always does fine so I waited and looked at the mail yesterday.

Yup ours mails report cards too just got dd yesterday and she got out June 14th.

Quick question, does anyone have their kid join the national honors society? Keep getting requests for it.

My DD joined last year. It was something she really enjoyed. They did much more in HS NHS than JNHS in middle school.

We got ours today. DS16's last day was the 19th. Last year we didn't get report cards until July.

We had some hurricane days and some snow days which pushed us back over a week. But we also don't start until the last week of August.

You must have more days off during the year than we do. We had 2 snow days, which kept us in school 2 days longer, getting out June 6th. We start the day after Labor Day.

Our hs doesn't mail report cards - you have to go pick them up.

Who has completed senior pictures? Curious as to costs...
