We've been on a much needed family vacation then home getting DD packed up and off to Thespian Festival. She is home next week then off the following week to Joffrey's Ballet West Intensive for 3 weeks. We start school in mid August so I am already lamenting that the summer is half over. There is a mini college fair at the Thespian Festival and DD is learning about a bunch of schools she knows nothing about. If she comes home with any information I will gladly share it. She auditioned today for several schools and received several callbacks. I am only familiar with two of the schools, the rest I had not heard off.
How is everyone else doing with college visits?
We have done one more college visit, Loyola Marymount in LA, CA. I liked it, DD thought it was a bit small for her (10,000) students but thinks she may apply anyway. She did like that they had a strong community service aspect to the school. I liked that they had adult advisor/nondenominational ministers in the dorms who were there for students if they needed them. DD thought this was too much like the advisors at her high school. She really wants a big school with some anonymity since she went to a small high school. The school has a nice feel with many programs and seems to truly take a holistic approach to admissions. They are Jesuit and do require two religion classes and two philosophy classes but there were many offerings. My husband asked the tour guide if she had any Jesuit professors and she said no. The religious aspect is low key to nonexistent unless a student wants it. If anyone has questions about the tour, please ask and I will try and answer.
We are so relieved over here... DS was shooting for a 29 or better on the ACT which would according to the conversion charts then be better than his SAT score, and he ended up with a 34. I could have cried. I am hoping upon hope that we can use it as a bargaining chip for some sort of boost in merit aid. Every dollar will count!!
Sorry, I swear I'm not trying to sound all braggy -- this is just a huge relief for us. I'm hoping it helps us some, $$-wise!
Congrats Gina! that is great. A little bragging is fine, we are all proud of our kids and it's nice that we can share here and not feel competitive.
And forgot to say, welcome momto3gr8boys, sbtrfly74, and anyone else I might have missed!!
I second the welcome!!!!
Does anyone know about schools especially in Florida, or North Carolina or other southern states.
DD's ideal school is around 25,000 students, a University, offers undergraduate BA or minors in Dance, Theatre, and Business. Has a Greek Life option, strong school spirit and is located in or near a city. We would love suggestions. We have exhausted the LA area which she believes is her first choice.
Hope everyone's summer is enjoyable. We are getting much less done on the college planning and ACT review then I had hoped but I keep telling myself there are 10 days in August before school starts...maybe then. It's going to be a really busy fall.
