Parent: Odd question about what your child wears to bed.

I was dropping off DS at daycare this morning. Two other Moms were there discussing another Mom who "lets her son sleep NAKED!" Maybe I am way out of the loop here but why would that be so shocking? I mean letting your child run around naked in public would be another story but what would be the big deal of a 5 or 6 year old sleeping that way in his own room? I just don't get it. DS sleeps that way sometimes. He also sometimes wears swim trunks or pjs and even an occasional super hero costume. Is it really a big deal what a child wears or does't wear to sleep in?

People are strange. What's wrong with sleeping naked, especially if it's hot? My daughter sleeps naked or in her undies in the summer (she's 8) because there's no a/c in her room. She has a fan and a ceiling fan. In the winter, she's decked out in her warm princess nightgowns.

I'm pretty sure, yeah I'm absolutely sure, my child isn't going to sleep naked. SOMETHING must be worn. In the privacy of their room it can be a shirt (short one) and underwear, but some kind of clothing. What if you have to run out of the house because of a fire or something in the middle of the night?

Clothes are necessary at bedtime here.

Mostly my kids wear long teeshirts and underwear to bed. They have some PJ's but they seem to be saved more for sleepovers.

ETA, I have no problem with other people letting their kids sleep naked. Big deal. I just don't.

Nope, no nekkid kids here (or parents, for that matter).

DS wears his boxers to bed and DD usually wears shorty shorts with a tshirt.

Completely with you on this one. Clothes are worn here...it's part of being modest, especially when you have boys and girls. AND....totally worry about the "what if there's a fire, tornado, whatever".....

ETA: my kids normally wear PJs. The boys may wear basketball style shorts and a tee, but they always have pjs too.

And, I don't care what others wear at their houses (providing my kids aren't staying the night there, LOL).

I appreciate your perspective. I guess in the case of a fire I just figured if we were talking "life or death" it didn't really matter what they were wearing as long as they were safe-- but I do understand that every family is different.

Not sure why it's so shocking I think, in the absence of scandal, people have to create scandal. I like to sleep clothed, but it doesn't matter to me how others choose to sleep.

Well, I wouldn't let being naked stop me from running out of the house, but what kid is going to run out naked? They are going to want to stop and put on clothing, right? You don't need further distraction in an emergency type situation. Just my thoughts. I worry about this kind of stuff.

As someone who's had to run out of a burning house in the middle of the night in my nightgown (at 6 years old), I never, EVER sleep naked.

And don't allow my kids to, either.

My DS 10 sometimes sleeps naked. His room is the hottest in the house so he doesn't wear a shirt, also he plays a lot of soccer and has a tendency to get a wicked rash on his upper thighs, form the moisture and friction. It gets so bad that we have to treat it with a prescription ointment. If this happens, yep he sleeps naked, on the advise of his ped, so the area can get air. He must however put on his boxers if he gets up.

Everyone else has clothes one, well DS14 has on his boxers and that is all. DD usually soffees and a t-shirt.

He knows if we're at someone else's house (like Grandma's) he must wear PJs. And that if we have company he needs to put on PJs before leaving his room in the morning. He understands and follows those rules.

I think the fire argument is silly. If it were the middle of winter and a fire were to happen (God forbid!), kids with jammies on will be just as cold outside with no shoes on. And I'm not going to make my child wear shoes either. He would grab his blanket if he could. And if not we'd get into a neighbor's house right away and put a blanket on him, just like we would if he were wearing PJs.

To be fair her Dad my DS was a naked kid too, I checked with his Ped Dr to see if any dangers - nope. Plus he never had a rash - diaper or other kind.

If anyone is looking at a 3yo fleeing a burning house and all they notice is she is naked - well.........................

She also has to have all the lights out, complete darkness.

To me, it wouldn't be about being cold outside. It would be about causing delays. (A kid wanting to dress, etc) Like I told my children when we were at a beach adjacent to a nude beach....other families have different definitions and expectations of modesty. No need to judge, but our family will do what we think is right for our family.

so I don't see a problem with kids being naked. For those that do sleep in clothes- don't you get all tangled up and wake up with lines on your body where the clothes have bunched up?

Northridge Earthquake here. I have clothes and eyeglasses stashed around the house and in the car. So far no earthquakes in Florida, and I'm sure it's because I've fended them off with my preparedness.

I have no problem with what other families do. It's whatever they are comfortable with. Our experiences have dictated our level of comfort.

As for my clothes preventing me from sleeping... I've never inspected myself for lines, but the few I've noticed go away - nothing permanent.

Obviously, you can (and do) have your kids wear whatever they want (or not) to bed. It doesn't impact me at all.

However, we have chosen to have our kids wear something to bed. Just a different choice.
