Would the standard room just be too small for 4 adults and a toddler? I know it's allowed but would it just be too uncomfortable for 2-3 nights?

No...the PPH hotel rooms are the largest of the three resort hotels.

Is Paradise Pier not in the Disney "bubble?" Do we have to cross traffic getting to the park? We stayed at Disneyland Hotel last time and didn't have to cross traffic. We loved the feeling of being in the Disney bubble, but wanted to try something new this time. Can't find any info on this

When we stayed at the Paradise Pier Hotel, we didn't care for the crossing of the street, seeing all the cars in the morning while walking to the park, then again when we wanted a break. Once you get into the GCH, you feel the "bubble". It would wonderful if Disney would build a special skywalk to DTD from the PPH so you wouldn't have to see the cars at all. It is a nice hotel and the character meal was good. Just seeing the cars, especially if you have to wait for the light dampens the Disney feel.

I think a lot of people don't realize you can avoid the busy road. We used a tip here that suggested going out the back entrance past the game room. You skirt around the parking area (for car rentals and guest parking) and remain on that same sidewalk all the way into Downtown Disney. It's a little longer walk to the parks, but a nice little walk.
Another great tip was for the elevators. Go up to go down, rather than waiting for a down elevator that's already full during busy mornings.

We stayed at PPH in early Dec. 2014. We used the street crossing signs and walked most of the time with cast members. It was nice to walk through the GC. We did walk once from DTD through DLH and then to PPH. I thought the walk was much longer than going through the GC.

We loved our stay at PPH theme park view. We are a family of 4. 2 adults and 2 teenagers. We loved the size of the room and used the daybed since my girls don't like sharing a bed.

PPH is very cool. Best cafe, lounge area with TV and good wifi
(Newcastle on draft from 6am, hidden but there in back).
PCH Grill, nice pool area. Video games for the kids and kids cartoon room.
