Out of shape and cant walk without being a grumpy old fart.
Advice?

It's not a bad walk at all. It's basically across the street from the Grand Californian, which is adjacent to California Adventure.

Monorail really only helps if you are staying at the Disneyland Hotel.

As previous post stated the walk to the gc and thru that is fastest. But almost as fast is, walk across parking lot till you find a path that goes along the movie thertre, which comes out close to monorail. Our only problem was every time we count on the monorail, it is closed down. When we go in am to get it into park it is closed and not running. When in park we walk all the way to monorail to find out it is closed. When we want to go hotel late at night we find it closed. So we in the last five years just assume the monorail is closed and we never assume differently, that way if by chance we can use it we feel like we hit the lottery.

But if you are looking for a cup of coffee, or a breakfast sandwich in the morning, we like to take that path over to the movie thertre and then walk DtD early to the park. Walk is not bad. We actually think the walk from to PP is closer and better than DLH.

I disagree that it's almost as fast (as walking out the front of PPH, turning left, crossing over to the Grand, going inside, turning left down the hall to DTD, etc), but I have also had the experience of wanting to use the monorail but finding it closed.

I ONLY use the monorail if I'm at DLH and want to start in or right near Tomorrowland near the monorail station. I only use it going back to the hotel if I am in Tomorrowland near the monorail station, or will be passing by it, and am going to DLH or Rainforest Cafe.

Otherwise it's just too frustrating when it's closed.

Oddly I prefer the PPH walk to the DLH. It is broken in to 3 parts, firstly the walk along Disneyland Drive and across the road and towards the entrance of the GC. Then you get to enjoy walking through the GC, this could be a nice place to rest. Then the final bit through DTD. It seemed shorter than the walk all the way through DTD even though it is about the same.

We caught the monorail once from there but it took longer as the first train when got there was full, so we had to wait for the next one.

I think the walk is fine. We go through GCH all the time. I know many people feel that the good neighbor hotels are closer. But going on the street (at times busy.) feels chaotic. You're stuck on a crowded sidewalk, etc. cutting through GCH is at least pleasant.

I'm currently at PPH. Keep in mind that if you are going though GCH and DCA, it will take long to go through CA. Condor flats area is currently closed. Foot traffic is very busy at CA. I've never found CA busy. But it is now

It is about a 6-7 min walk through the GC to the bag tent. DLH is about 7-8 min. I would use the main gates. If you are coming in 30 mins after park opening and want to go to DCA, then I would use the DCA entrance.
