Paradise and Magic..All Rolled into One Vacation! UD3/28 A Top 10 Wrap Up

Ooh, pretty, pretty light show! That's always fascinating to me how nature shows itself!

Glad to hear that you never felt anything after the slight shift at pizza time. I know that can really throw you for a loop.

:banana::banana: for Cocoa Beach and then on to the Happiest Place on Earth!

It really was beautiful. It was definitely a different view than you would normally get! :thumbsup2

The movement was a little freaky! I'm glad the ship didn't move like that the whole cruise.

Can't wait to get to DISNEY!!

Oooo....love your nighttime light show!! Almost like fireworks at sea!!

Your last day looks great! I'm with you - I can do a day or two of "relaxing" but then I need to "do" something - can't wait to hear about Boma and your day in the MK!!:banana:

Getting ready to post an update now. Trying to get through the day quickly so I can get to the Disney part of this report! ;)

Friday May 7th, Day 5, Port Canaveral and Cocoa Beach---Orlando Bound!

As all good things must come to an end (what buzzkill said that, anyway?), our 4 day Bahamas cruise on the gorgeous Monarch of the Seas had , indeed, come to an end. Jeff and I had packed our bags the night before and left them outside our stateroom door to be taken off the ship, so all we had were our carry-on bags to pack up and get ready. We showered, packed up what little we had left, and bid farewell to our little stateroom, 3106. :sad1:

Our plan was to have a nice breakfast in the dining room while we waited for our luggage tag color to be called. Passengers were to leave the ship according to luggage tag color...I guess to control the mass exodus of 2000 people through customs all at one time! We were to begin disembarking around 8:00 am.

Jeff and I got to the Dining Room and were met with the pleasant surprise of G &T, our table mates, who were also there. We decided to enjoy our last breakfast together. Breakfast was delicious, of course, and conversation turned to what we were planning to do when we got home. G & T were headed right back to Kentucky and were anxious to get home to their 15 year old and college aged kids. I was so grateful at this point that we had decided to put our WDW excursion at the END of the cruise. Now instead of thinking about going home....I was looking forward to going to my very favorite place! All too soon, we were called to gather in the lounge area and we said our final good-byes and made our way to our final gathering point before getting off the ship.

Funny story...in the elevator we saw a woman who had just received her SeaPass bill. They slip the bills under your stateroom doors the night before you disembark. Remember, EVERYTHING you need on the ship is paid for with your SeaPass card. From drinks, to gift shop purchases, to photos....NO cash exchanges hands on board the ship. Jeff and I were very careful to be on top of what we were spending and there were no surprises when we got our bill. This was apparently not the case for this lady! She literally looked like she might faint when she saw her total! :scared1: It's so easy to get carried away when you don't see actual money changing hands. And when drinks cost $8 or so each and you buy rounds for everyone at the pool....well, that adds right up! Believe me....I'm sure that's what the cruise line is counting on!

Getting off the ship was actually a very smooth and orderly process. You exit right into the customs area where you pick up your luggage and are given the OK by a customs agent to pass. We were off the ship and through customs before 9 am. AMAZING!

Next step was to find the shuttle to Thrifty Rental Car to pick up our car for the remainder of the trip. All the shuttles were waiting just outside the port terminal and we found ours quickly. I snapped this picture, the last we saw of the Monarch of the Seas, at 9:09 am.

BahamasCruiseandDisney_0125.jpg

The rental car office was only a few minutes away...as we knew since we had to rent a car unexpectedly on the arrival end of our trip. Only one family was ahead of us and we got the details taken care of and got our car very quickly. By 9:25, we had our red Dodge Charger and were on our way to the next part of our adventure!

(I took this picture on departure day, but it fits better in the report here!)

Considering we really had no plans for the day until our Boma reservation at 8:05, we had all day to just enjoy the scenery and the gorgeous weather! First though, I needed to call home and find out how Jonah was doing. As soon as we had our luggage loaded up and were headed out of the rental lot I called my mom. The last I had talked to her, it was Wednesday and Jonah was home from school. She was planning on taking him to the doctor's office the next day if necessary. When I called around 9:30 on Friday, Jonah was STILL home and had been diagnosed with Strep throat. He was still running a fairly high fever and not really feeling well at all. Mom was being a trooper and managing to take care of him as well as getting the other two boys where they needed to be when they needed to be there. She had picked up an antibiotic for Jonah and was making sure he took it faithfully. I talked to Jonah and, again, got a few tears from him. Poor little boy. Jeff and I both took turns letting him know how much we loved him and missed him and that we were sorry we weren't there when he was feeling so yucky. Other than that, there wasn't much we could do. We blew him kisses, thanked Mom (who once again told us not to worry) and promised to call later when we had checked into the hotel and the other boys were home from school.

That taken care of, we wanted to hit a nice beach and do some shell collecting. The boys had asked for shells from the Bahamas but we couldn't take shell from there due to customs laws, so they would have to settle for shells from Florida! We got on main strip along Cocoa Beach and just drove until we had driven OUT of the main tourist area. We found a little place along the road with beach access and parked the car. Off came the shoes and we hit the beach. The only other people on the beach were two guys fishing....other than that we had it all to ourselves. It was fairly remote and untouched and we had our pick of tons of cool shells for the boys. :thumbsup2 Here are some pictures of our beachcombing adventure.

After about 30 minutes, we dusted the sand off our feet and got back in the car in search of a Dunkin Donuts! We had seen one on the way to the beach and we desperately needed some Iced Coffee! We also wanted to find a visitor's center and scope out our options of what to do with our day. We didn't want to spend a lot of money and we aren't really sit-around-on-the-beach people.

The Iced Coffee did not disappoint and we found the Chamber of Commerce Visitor's Center for Cocoa Beach not too far away. A very nice lady named Pat gave us maps and some great pointers about what to do with our day. We toyed with driving to the nature refuge to see manatees, but that was a little bit of a drive. Pat recommended that we try Jetty Park. For a $10 parking fee, we could walk along the jetty and see sea turtles and maybe even dolphins. We also had beach access and there were changing rooms, restrooms, and even a snack area. SOLD!

By 11:00, we were pulling into the parking area at Jetty Park. We had passed this park as the ship made it's way to sea.....I remembered seeing the RV's parked right by the ocean. There was a walkway that many people used to fish and observe the sea life along the shore. You could also see the Submarine base across the water.

See....a submarine!

Continued in Next Post.....

Okay, so now you've made me want to book a cruise and go back to Cocoa Beach. I had forgotten how pretty the beach was there. Hummmm....we need something to do on our first day in Orlando so I may just have to add a drive to the beach on our list of possibilities.

Along our walk we met a nice couple that lived locally. We spent some time chatting and they agreed to take our picture.

As we were walking, this little guy came right out and paraded around. Kinda odd to be out in the middle of the day, but he wasn't acting strange. He was cute!

After our walk to the end of the pier, we were getting hot so we decided to go dip our feet in the ocean at the beach. We had our suits, but neither of us really wanted to get changed and go swimming so we opted to just walk along the water and enjoy the cool sand and ocean breeze.

By about 12:30 we had our fill of sand and water and were anxious to get on the road and begin our journey back to Orlando and the Happiest Place on Earth! We had one more stop to make before we left Port Canaveral, though. Pat ( from the Visitor's Center) had recommended that we check out a cool place call the Locks. It was an area where boats and small ships were able to travel from the Indian River into the Atlantic Ocean. You could watch the locks actually working if you were lucky enough to get there when boats were coming through. She also said we may be able to see manatee and dolphins there as well. We set our GPS and went in search of the locks! It was a little out of the way, but we did manage to find the little parking area and took the short walk to the area she was speaking of. Now, you may find this boring, but Jeff and I can be a little nerdy at times and we found this fascinating! We stood around waiting for boats to enter the lock. As they did, they tied off and waited for the signal from the control house. Once there were several small boats inside and tied up, the gates began to close and the water level began to rise. It wasn't really all that dramatic, but it was cool to watch. The bells sounded again and the boats went on their way. We also managed to see tons of fish and this guy.

Look closely....it's a manatee!

And our last look at Port Canaveral as we head out toward Orlando!
BahamasCruiseandDisney_0152.jpg

Our next order of business was to set the GPS and head toward Orlando and our resort. We were staying at the Wyndham Bonnet Creek courtesy of Jeff's parents' timeshare points. :thumbsup2 We also wanted to stop for a light lunch since our dinner reservation at Boma was not until 8:05. We found a Subway off the highway and enjoyed our sandwiches before hitting the road again. We wanted to get to our resort in time to check in, get settled, and maybe enjoy the pool before getting ready for dinner. It's about an hour or so from the Port to Orlando and at precisely 3:12 pm, I saw this!!!!!!!

Wow - what a nice day!! I love how you guys take the time to explore. I would have jumped in the car and bee lined it to Orlando.

Yeah...we both like to explore new places. Our resort check-in time wasn't until 3 so we figured there was really no rush. But I was SO excited to see that sign!! :woohoo:

All caught up Missy! so sorry to hear your baby was not well while you were gone; but, happy to hear he was in great loving hands.

Cocoa Beach was beautiful! You should definitely check it out if you have time!

YAY...that sign just makes me all giddy! :woohoo:

After a day of sightseeing at Cocoa Beach, we had finally made it to Orlando and passed under THE sign! That is a sight that will never get old for me! It always makes me feel like I'm 5 years old....and although he may not admit it to everyone.....it does the same for Jeff!

Our GPS took us right to the doorstep of the Wyndham Bonnet Creek Resort. As a refresher, Jeff's parents have a timeshare and had graciously allowed us to use it for our 2 nights in Orlando. This place is just gorgeous! We had stayed in their facility in Las Vegas so had an idea of what to expect. It did not disappoint. We got the mandatory “come check us our for a tour and free breakfast” speech and politely told them that we would love to, but with only ONE day at Disney, our time was very limited. With that, we checked in and were given directions to our building located in what we affectionately called the Tower of Terror. (for no other reason than that is what the sign looked like it said!)

BahamasCruiseandDisney_0205.jpg

When Jeff's dad booked us the room, there were no one-bedrooms available, so he had booked us in a two-bedroom suite. After the very tight quarters of the ship, we felt like we were living in the lap of luxury! This suite was GINORMOUS! Here's a pictorial tour of our humble accommodations!

After a little unpacking and a phone call home to the boys, we decided to take a little stroll over to the pool. We had dinner reservations at Boma at 8:05 and it was just past 4:30 so we had some down time and wanted to cool off and relax a bit. It was a short walk to the pool and we staked out a couple of lounge chairs before jumping in!

BahamasCruiseandDisney_0165.jpg

This pool area also had a lazy river and we spent some time just floating and enjoying a lazy afternoon. It was only interrupted by a grouchy lady who had decided to park her inner tube and the rest of her family in a corner of the lazy river to drink beer. She was so irritated by the kids who kept jumping in around her and kept yelling and fussing. For goodness' sake woman..you are at a POOL and the kids are playing.....if you want to drink in peace go to the bar! UGH!

After about an hour of swimming and lazing around, we headed back to the room to get cleaned up and think about heading to AKL. We wanted to have some time to explore the resort before our ADR. AKL is my dream resort and I couldn't wait to check it out!

By 6:15 we were headed out the door and on our way to AKL. We had a little issue with our GPS taking us to the wrong place, but we finally figured it out and parked in the parking lot by 6:40. Plenty of time to take in all the sights at the resort before dinner.

I have to say, Animal Kingdom Lodge blew me away! It is just gorgeous! We started in the lobby and worked our way out to the savannah area and visited the pool as well. Here is a photo tour!

Some of these pictures of the lobby are dark and in no way capture the beauty of the resort. But, I'm going to post them anyway so you get an idea.

As we headed to the pool area we heard the funniest thing. A little boy, about 9 or 10, was with another little boy and he was obviously irritated. He said to the boy, “I wanted to go swimming, but they closed the pool cause a kid pooped in it. Just pulled down his pants and POOPED!” Jeff and I just cracked up laughing! This boy was SO put out that someone had the audacity to poop in the pool. We laughed about that one all night!

We spent about an hour just leisurely strolling around the grounds. I am so convinced now that someday I will stay here! SOMEDAY!!

By about 7:50 we knew it was time to head inside and check in for our ADR at Boma. Up next....BEST...DINNER...EVER!

Hey Missy! So sorry it's taken me so long to post over here but I wanted to get all caught up! My in-laws have a time share with Wyndham as well and they stay at Bonnet Creek when they go to WDW. It looks beautiful! And LOVE your pics of AKL! Can't wait to see it for ourselves in a few weeks when we eat at Boma! Can't wait to hear about your dinner at Boma!!
