Does anyone know how the families get chosen to ride in the parades? I would like to surprise my family on our next visit if possible.

The Grand Marshalls are chosen completly at random. It is truely a matter of being in the right place at the right time. I've talked to the guy who gets to pick the grand marshalls and he says people ask all the time to be chosen, they even offer money! But he is really fair and doesn't even let CMs ask as favors!

where's the right place? is it at a particular location, within a particular hour of the day?

Not really. The "GM chooser" sort of wanders the crowd and looks for families that seem to be having fun, dressed appropriately (no vulgar t-shirts or too-short shorts, etc), enjoying themselves, and are animated. Some folks do their choosing first thing in the AM; others do it later in the day. There really isn't a place where you can just hang out and wait for the CM to show up. It doesn't work that way. And, frankly, the people who are trying really hard to be chosen are less likely to be chosen! They like to choose people for whom it will be a total surprise.

I know that's all very vague and ambiguous, but it truly is a random choice.
