Has anyone ever done this excursion through Disney? We have 1 day in Rome. We are really just looking for the highlights. I have considered a private tour through Driver in Rome shore excursions also. Has anyone ever used them or have recommendations for other shore excursions?

We haven’t used them but have found that doing the big highlights are really easy to do on our own. All the big things are “within walking distance” and on the way to the next thing. Or short taxi ride. Easy city to navigate. So might want to look at that as an option. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Thanks. I'll look into that.

If you're comfortable with long walks or public transit, you could hit a bunch of sites in Rome on your own. If you're doing that, you will need to get transportation to Rome as well, either by taking the train for Civitavecchia or doing the Rome on Your Own excursion.
My family (with me, husband, and kids 10 and 14) did a private day tour with Rome in Limo that included the Coliseum, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, a private tour of the Vatican (including the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's), a pizza lunch, and 1 or 2 other places for about the same as we would have spent for an excursion through Disney Cruise. It was a long day, but we saw a lot.

An advantage to booking through DCL is that you will make it back to the ship on time or DCL will get you to the next port. However, our driver was in constant touch with his office to be aware of any traffic issues, as was the driver from Joe Banana Tours who we used in Naples on a different cruise. If you use a reputable company, getting back is unlikely to be an issue in Europe. Major traffic tie-ups will affect everyone, including Disney buses.

A disadvantage to booking through DCL for a tour with multiple stops is that you will be waiting until everyone is back before you can move on, so you will probably see less than you would on your own.

Not through DCL, but we did a private tour on our NCL cruise. The advantage was the smaller vehicle (we had a van for 8 people) was able to better navigate traffic than the buses. In addition, we were taken to the driver's favorite lunch spot instead of the "tourist" spot where the buses go. This meant better food and better prices. We moved at our own pace and saw what we wanted to see, and made it back to the ship with plenty of time.

We did a private tour with Rome in Limo as well, we paid for both the private transportation, and separately there was a tour guide for some of the spots we hit, and we loved this - we got to see the things we were interested in. This was in 2019, we paid 600 euros for the transportation and 190 euros for the tour guide, plus some admission tickets for things. After our tour guide was done, our driver was still essentially our tour guide, he was awesome.

I use get your guide a lot to book tours with local guides wherever we travel and haven’t been disappointed yet. Some will pick you right up at the port and others have meet up spots.

We took the train and did everything on our own when we did our Med cruise. I think if we did it again we'd train and hire a local guide in Rome for the day.
