pandora w/o seeing the movie?

No. I've never seen the movie and never will. It's still cool to see everything. I may not "understand" as much as those who have seen it, but it's still really neat.

Last year I watched the movie before we went and honestly, I don't think I necessarily needed it. I went with a friend who didn't see the movie and she was able to pick up the concept fairly quickly. Walking in, you know you are in another world filled with new plants and animals. FOP kind of explains important ideas and elements prior to getting on the ride, like getting an avatar and riding a banshee. The river ride may be confusing with the animatronic women at the end. If you don't want to watch the movie, youtube elements of it, like the characters, how to fly with banshees and the avatar process.

You don't really need to see it. Personally I really like the movie, so I would generally recommend watching it, but not because you won't understand the World of Pandora if you don't. Any explanation that you need comes in the FoP pre-show, and even then, it's not a big deal. It basically boils down to "you ride a big, flying dragon-like creature." The world as presented in teh park takes place several generations after the events depicted in the movie. So basically, there was a big war a while ago, but all that's gone now and we give tours of this beautiful moon. It's pretty simple.

if we've never seen avatar will we be lost in pandora?

No, not at all.

Do I think it enhances the experience? Yes, if you like the movie I think it enhances both rides. FoP can stand on its own simply because it's amazing, but I do feel the River Journey is enhanced more if one sees the movie, or at least sees a summary. I'm an uber Avatar fan, so I'm biased.

It's not necessary to see the movie. In fact, I do not recommend the movie for small children or those with very tender hearts. It's a good movie for those who love action, don't mind swearing, love cgi, and a storyline that tugs at your heartstrings.

Not at all. Even the CM's at the AP previews were telling people in line that they didn't need to previously see the movie to enjoy the land.

I'd recommend seeing the movie as it's good and you'll understand the land a little more. But you don't have to watch it to appreciate Pandora

James Cameron might disagree, but knowing the movie did not enhance nor take away from the Pandora experience for me. It's just a good experience whether you know the plot, or not.

I say “Watch the movie!”. Even if you hate it, you will at least have a better appreciation for the incredible detail the imagineers put into Pandora. You don’t have to watch it to enjoy the land but I believe it will enhance your experience.

Glad to see a lot of movie fans on this thread. Where have ya'll been hiding? ;) I still say that I don't think it's necessary to see it, but hey, it's a good movie, so why not watch it?

The beauty of Pandora is you don't need to see the movie. The land itself is built separate from the movie. None of the characters from the movie are in the land. The land is also set in a time period long after the film.

We decided to watch the movie after we visited Pandora. I think it is not *necessary* but if you plan on riding Na’vi River Joury, I think it would greatly enhance that ride. (Although the ride itself needs to be enhanced greatly. o_O)

I'm sure similar questions will pop up over time after Toy Story Land and STGE open up. I have to assume the answers will be the same as for Pandora.

Well, obviously, one shouldn't even bother going to Disney World at all unless they have seen:

Cinderella
Peter Pan
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Fantasia
Beauty and the Beast
The Little Mermaid
Sword in the Stone
Toy Story 1 - 3
Haunted Mansion
Pinocchio
Alice In Wonderland
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (What? When? Boooo! Okay, scratch that one.)
Princess and the Frog
Sleeping Beauty
The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
The African Queen (not Disney but still - I mean, everyone should see that one anyway)
Lilo & Stitch (or wait, you can skip that one now)
All 5 Pirates of the Caribbean Movies
A Swiss Family Robinson
Song of the South
Aladdin
Dumbo
Country Bears
Monsters Inc./Monsters University
Frozen
Tangled
Finding Nemo & Finding Dory
The Three Caballeros & Saludos Amigos
Mission to Mars
At least 7 episodes of The Twilight Zone
Pocahontas
All 4 Indiana Jones Movies (soon to be 5)
The complete discography of Aerosmith
Star Wars, Star Wars, and more Star Wars
Avatar
Avatar: Extended Edition
Avatar: Extra Extended Edition (and know the difference - there's a quiz!)
Dinosaur
Lion King (and the sequels maybe?)

Go ahead and get a head start on Ratatouille and Guardians of the Galaxy Volumes 1 and 2 since that's coming our way. Oh, and Tron and Tron Legacy.

Okay, some of those are less important than others, but if you eat in a themed food venue, there's a back story! ;)

Seriously, that's why I love Disney. It permeates our lives so much, and yet they do a great job in the parks of making everything accessible whether you have seen the movies or not. Rest assured it's an enjoyable from the most hardcore Disney Nerd to someone who doesn't know who Figaro is. It's fun for all!

I tried watching Pandora a number of times, but I found the plot difficult to follow and it put me to sleep every time.

However, I wouldn’t have missed seeing Pandora. FoP was too intense for me, but I loved Navi River and Satuli Canteen. Just go with the mindset that you’re visiting another planet, and you’ll enjoy seeing what they’ve built. :)
