Palo's overrated?

I lived in northern Italy for 3 years and ate regularly with an Italian family. I was hoping to see some standard fare on the Palo menu - although I did find the mushroom risotto at Triton's for lunch. Now that was EXCELLENT!

I thought Palo brunch was excellent especially the antipasto selections. But I didn't see anything on the dinner menu that "captured" my appetite.

At WDW we thoroughly enjoyed our meals at Mama Melrose's - atmosphere very reminiscent to many "mom and Pop" places and food was delicious and quite authentic. I'd like to see DCL incorporate some of their menu somewhere on the ship.

Rae519...

Interesting that you mentioned the Mushroom Risotto at Lumiere's ... 'cause the one we enjoyed at Palo was superb ... as smooth and deeply flavoured as any I 've ever had.

Speaking of home cooking, I'd give anything to find an [extreme north Italian] home-style "coniglio e polenta" on a menu this side of the Atlantic, but I haven't seen it yet. :(

Never tried Mama Melrose's. Guilty of assuming it just couldn't be what it claimed. Thanks to your observation, we'll reconsider.

Best,

There was nothing in the world to compare to homemade polenta - and it was very timeconsuming for my "family" to make. That with sausages was just the best!!! I remember a venison stew I had that was excellent - of course, now you got me started - veal scallopini with cream and mushroom sauce, tortellini in cream sauce and the tiramesu.

Orsini's Restaurante near Aviano/Pordenone was THE place that all Americans and most locals flocked to. I can still recall Signor Orsini reciting the menu to us - no, there were no menu's handed out since everynight was different!

My favorite place in the world is Vittoria Veneto - lovely mountain village with wonderfully friendly people. Could have lived there forever happily!

The smell at Mama Melrose (woodburning stove) was intoxicating! How I remember those small pizzarias and how warm the stove was as we passed by to our table!
Give it a try - DH, DS and I were very pleased!

Mmmm... pizza.... :D I spent several months in Nice, France on business and lived off those wood-fired oven pizzas. I especially like the hot pepper-olive oil mix you put on them, but only a small dab for me.

My favorite dishes in that area, though, were the seafood dishes. Lobster-spaghetti, mussells, and especially fruit-de-mer (raw, of course) and paella. I used to eat a lot of Cuban-style paella in Key West but have found I prefer the french/italian variety better. The Cuban stuff emphasizes sausage and other land-critters. The french/italian variety was heavier on the seafoods - including little, whole octopi (is that a word??)!

Any chance Palo (or restaurants around Nassau for that matter) serve paella?

We enjoyed our dining experience at Palo's. We found the food to be superior to what was being served for dinner in the dining rooms. Dinner at Palo's is definitely worth the $5 per person up charge. The premium paid to dine at Palo's is substantially less than what one will pay on other cruise lines (e.g. $20 pp on Princess or Royal Caribbean).

In our opinion the food and it's presentation on the Disney Magic was mediocre as compared to Royal Caribbean's Explorer of the Seas or The Grand Princess.

The setting and buffet offerings at Topsiders was definitely inferior to our experiences on Royal Caribbean or Princess. Both of their ships had much more seating and the dining areas had extensive glass to provide a spectacular view while seated.

While on The Disney Magic we did have to good fortune to be waited on by the nicest restaurant Server to date: Janina from South Africa.
