Anyone ever been there? Anyone live there?

My DGF and I are moving down there at the beginning of October and we have no idea what to expect.

Anyone out there with experience?

TIA!! :sunny:

My mom and dad live down there. It's hot.

(but it's a dry heat) :D :D :D :D

Seriously, it's a great place, everyone is friendly...very peaceful.

Be sure to take a day trip to Joshua Tree. It is the meeting of 2 deserts and we have thoroughly enjoyed several visits there. Another place we liked was Uprising Outdoor Rock Climbing Center, if you enjoy stuff like that. It is the only outdoor climbing gym in the world, I think. It is misted and a lot of fun.

Great pools, great palm trees. Just a nice getaway.

Sounds very resorty and pretty :)

Do you think a couple in their early 20's would enjoy living in that community? Are there other things than golf courses (besides that cool rock climbing thing, which I will definitely try out) out there?

Thanks again for all your help.

I've only been a couple of times on vacation, so can't really answer relocation questions.

There are a LOT of golf courses!:D But I don't play golf. Gorgeous views of unbelievable desert mountains in the distance. I remember it being a great place to run. I was there once in July and it really was hot. Southwestern heat really is different from the muggy eastern summers I'm used to. But 117' in Palm Springs was fairly unbearable. Our waitress at dinner told us her outside car mirrors had melted off! Our comfort level must be about 110'.

We also went to a canyon to hike. Great outdoor stuff like that. Interesting natural oasis and information about Native Americans.

Although there is a lot of traffic, even driving around for the first time it was pretty easy to navigate.

Wish I could help more with the relocation info.

Wow....sounds smoltering.

i'm from the east coast too and I love the snow, the change in scenary, the cool breezes as night, etc...
I'm going to miss the little things :(

But thanks for your advice, all of you. So...I have to take up Golf, wear next to nothing, stay indoors, protect my car mirrors ( :) ), and watch out for the traffic :p

I grew up about 1.5 hours from the Palm Desert. My aunt and uncle live in Desert Hot Springs, so I spent a lot of time out there. There is a mall in Palm Springs that has an ice skating rink that's open all year round, whenever you need that Winter feeling LOL.

Also, Idyllwild is not that far from Palm Springs. It's a tiny mountain community that gets a good deal of snow. Also, closer to where I grew up is Big Bear Mountain. Lots of snow and great skiing.

Don't forget you'll only be 2.5 hours from Disneyland!!! And some of the other great theme parks are not much farther. And, you can't beat 3 hours from the beach! You could be in San Diego or Orange County beaches in 3 hours flat (on a good day with no traffic)

What kinds of things do you like to do? I'm sure I could come up with more suggestions :)

Where else can you snow ski in the morning and surf in the afternoon, southern CA is a lot of fun!

Wow, didn't know that Disneyland was that close! I've never been there before...that's a must do.

Knowing I can see snow and get a tan on the same day :) You can't get that here in Boston :) (naturally anyway).

We're into anything really...nothing in particular I suppose. Knowing that we're so close to Vegas, LA, Disneyland (even Six Flags in Valencia...Can I mention them here? :) ) makes moving that much easier to take!

Question, though, are there any Water Parks or Amusement Parks in Palm Springs? At 22, i'm still a youngin' who can be easily entertained ;)

How's the job market down there? Is it like it is Nationally? Is it safe down there?

Thanks again for all your help.

the job market is not great from what I hear. I haven't lived in SoCal in 15 years, but still have lots of friends there.

Vegas is about 5 hours, maybe only 4 if you go the back way through Joshua Tree. Magic Mountain (the six flags park there which I don't think anyone there actually calls six flags, locals call it magic mountain!) is probably about 4.5 hours away and is the best six flags park around (My opinion only, course it's my 'home park' so I'm biased!)

There are LOTS of museums, of course hollwood and beverly hills are fun to tour too. Lake Havasu in Arizona is only about 4 hours away and is a great destination place especially around spring break.

Don't forget the world famous san diego zoo and wild animal park(two different places, both worth the visit if you like zoos. I guarantee you've never seen a zoo that can equal the SD zoo.)

LA has a decent theater season of broadway touring shows if you like that kind of thing and a pretty good local theater scene too. You can go see tapings of TV shows, fun especially if you can get one of your favorites.

Last time I was there Palm Springs didn't have any parks, but that may well have changed. Check out raging waters in san dimas (about 3 hours away).

So can I ask why you are moving to Palm Springs? I'm nosey!

There is a water park in Palm Springs. It is adjacent to Uprising, and not too terribly far from the airport, I don't believe. I don't remember an amusement park. The San Andres fault runs along the edge of the city, so that might be a roller coaster at some time:( . One thing that stands out in my memory was the lushness of the vegetation, and the artificialness of it. A house will have the greenest grass and most beautiful trees and plantings. The lot next door has not been built on and is pure desert rock and sandy stone....nothing green, nothing lush. Then next door again, more green grass.....

I never felt unsafe, out running through neighborhoods alone or going to dinner etc. with the family. Palm Springs, Indian Wells, Palm Desert all kind of run together...you can't really tell where one begins or ends while driving. I liked Indian Wells.

I was in Joshua Tree in May once and it was very cool. I only had a t shirt and shorts and was freezing....air about 50 or so. We drove there from DisneyLand. It was an easy drive. It is about equal disance from Phoenix to Palm Springs, or in any case, not too terribly far.

We really love the area and would live there in a heartbeat, although the area doesn't have the type of employment my husband does. We're in our 30's, and felt it would be a great place. Except on 117' days!

There is a water park in Palm Springs Knotts Soak City .

If you need help finding housing in the area, please send me a pm. I work with many real estate and rental companies in that area.

We're moving because my DGF accepted a traveling nursing job at a hospital in Palm Springs, CA. It's quite a distance to travel to (45 hour drive), but it's only for 13 weeks. If we don't like it, we can come back to Boston or go somewhere else (I think I hear Hawaii calling :) ).

It's not a shabby gig either. They pay for our rent and utilities, as well as her getting a huge salary increase. I'm kind of in limbo in all this so i'll probably go back to school to get my MBA (and, of course, work on my tan while she's at work :cool2: ...I hope she doesn't mind)

:sunny: :sunny:

for whatever length of time you are there, be sure to take advantage of all that SoCal has to offer! Good luck to you both :)

ahh... I guessed it was a traveling RN position taking you to the desert...Eisenhower or Desert Hospitals? I worked at High Desert Hospital in Joshua tree in the Rehab dept. Travelers seem to be the rule rather than the exception out there...

I lived up in the Hi Desert in 29 Palms.. on two occassions.
We would go down the hill into Palm Springs for a night out or for shopping. So to us Palm Springs was 'big time" LOL

You will be living close enough to drive to many areas in So. Cal and even Arizona. If you plan on arriving btwn Oct-March,Y\you are coming at a time when many of the "snowbirds" arrive... the weather is warm and mild.
You will also run into folks from the Marine Corps base in 29 Palms coming to PS for fun too. PS is a pretty nice place.
