Several days ago someone posted how to make really neat tee shirts using flour and water to make a squirtable paste and trace mickey's head and spray paint around it. She had also posted really cute pics of her kids wearing them. For the life of me I cannot find it. I've looked in the other forums but I'm pretty sure I read it here. Anybody remember?

My DD and I made these this week and it was a lot of fun! We're thinking up new ideas to make more next week. :thumbsup2

The first shirt I squirted the mickey head on was gloppy. The bottle would get a little clump stuck in the nozzle, I would squeeze hard and glop. I saw one like this on another thread, though, so I figured it would be fine.

I cut the tip of the bottle bigger, and it worked a lot better.

I have really long nails, and found they worked great to "erase" a glob I got on one shirt by mistake, just scrape off the wet flour paste. A craft stick would probably work too. I just free handed the mickey heads, didn't have a pattern to trace, I don't think you need one for this project.

After they dried, and it took hours....I sprayed them with regular tulip tie dyes, I just put them in an old perfume spray bottle. So, I didn't use REAL fabric spray paints, adapted to make my own spray tie dye. I should have done this on the grass....spraying is messy.

Another tip, when spraying, wear gloves on both hands. I thought I would just need it on the spray bottle hand, and got somewhat dyed on my hands. Oh well! Also, the shirts got some drips of dye on them from the glove being too long and as I sprayed , I kept getting it on the glove, it would build up and drip. I rather liked the effect, but I am into free-form!

So, now the shirts are done, and just need to dry.

It didn't take long for the spray to dry, I let them in the sun for an hour. Then, I squeezed the shirts to crack all the flour lines, and peeled them off. Here is the finished set!

Since I used regular tie dye, I soaked/rinsed the shirts out in the tub, then ran them through the washer. I don't know if you would need to do that if you had the prepared spray fabric paint. I am happy with the results!

okay - these are really cute - what are you using to put the mickey heads on? Is it just glue???

It is a paste made out of one cup flour and about a cup of water, to make a mustard consistency paste. Use warm water, you will have less lumps! I rather like the gloppy look, but it was harder to squirt out of the bottle. I just used an empty squirt bottle that had come with some craft....

did you just spray paint the front??? We have a group going down to night of joy in sep and this could be fun to make for everyone!

I just did the fronts, but it would be very easy to do the backs, too. Just let the front dry first.

The shirts are adorable! This would be a great project for my family to do! Thanks so much for posting the pics - I'm more of a visual person anyway.

I made two of these shirts today. The first one I did the flour/water mixture. It came out good but the color bled through quite a bit. I made sure it was completely dry because I didn't want this to happen. The shirt was 50 cotton 50 polyester so that may have had something to do with it  The next one I used Elmers glue and it came out perfect!! I will try to post pictures later.

Hmm, strange that it bled through. I used shirts I picked up at Goodwill for a buck each, some were 50/50, some 100 percent cotton. I didn't really look at the fabric, just found shirts in styles I thought my kids would wear (tanks for the girls). Mine didn't bleed at all, but it took a LONG time for the flour to dry completely, HOURS in the sun.

Hmmm, interesting.... Elmer's Glue. Washes out, comes in convenient squirt bottle, and I believe I just saw a Staples ad for 9 cents a bottle. Thanky thanky, I needed an excuse to go to Staples anyway. ;)

Your shirts came out very cute! My DD wanted to make these but I'm not a crafty person, whenever I try to make anything it turns out disastrous :rotfl: .

HI -

I have a few questions about these cool shirts....

do you put anything in the middle?
do you have to use soda ash to soak them in like you do for regular tie dye?
if using dye, do you let the paste dry then spray the dye over them and then let the dye dry as well?
i am going to do a mickey, but people may try other designs, did anyone ever try painting the mixture into a stencil??

thanks, wendy

These shirts are awesome! I'm taking 2 friends for their first trip to WDW in November and I think we'll have a girls craft night to make these! How long does it take - not including drying time? Thanks for the idea!!
