I was wondering if someone had any advice....

I've had four operations this past 15 months, all involving a tumour (nothing dangerous just painful) which grew in my big toe, causing me to loose all the nail and most of the bone leaving me with a stump.

Last Tuesday i had reconstructive surgery and i had the dressing changed yesterday and the doc said everything looked good despite me saying i was in alot of pain, but omg i've been in agony all night and still am and i really don't know what to do. He gave me codene (30 strength) which sent me to cookoo land, so ive tried a less strong strength which just arent doing it...im in sooo much pain!!! Does anyone have any other ideas....

By Codeine I assume you mean Co-Cocodomol?

You could ask your doctor for Co-Dydramol, which is not as directly targeting as codeine is but is more a general strong painkiller - because it doesn't have the heavy side-effects of pure codeine it should be easier for you.

Failing that, you could try Tramadol in a small dosage, it's a VERY effective old-school pain killer. It can and probably will make you drowsy, but you're be more conscious than with codeine!

If you're having trouble sleeping at night, a pain killer with a mild sedative such as Amitriptyline (also used as a very mild anti-depressant) may well be of use to you.

HTH :goodvibes:

Pain is not a pleasant experience, especially when it's severe! Hope you feel better soon

The above are prescription only, so talk to the doc first!!!

 Sorry hun, I wish I had some advice for you, I just hope the pain eases soon for you

 hope you feel better soon

I'm sorry to hear you are in such pain Em, you have been through a lot this year. As suggested above my doctor prescribed me Amitriptyline for the trapped nerve I have in my neck and I find it to be a godsend, I just take one before bed and it really does help.

Thank you for your kind replies...Although im in pain still i had a good nights sleep (although didn't actually go to bed till late) but i slept all the way through and normally im up having nightmares because of the tablets or in pain.

I think i've found this op the hardest because I'm also in my own flat now, so knowing the responsibility of that and then having this, but today i am feeling alot more positive and my friends and you guys have been brilliant, thanks again :)

Oh Emily i feel so sorry for you i know what its like to be in constant pain its not nice is it, hope it eases off very soon take care x

Just an update: Had stitches out yesterday, turns out they hadn't healed properly (lots of blood etc) so now i have temporary paper ones holding it together till Tuesday when their going to see how it looks. Very frustrated as i could walk on the side of my foot before not to badly, now i can barely put the foot to the ground. Hopefully things will get better

Oh poor you. Having one of my ankles/bottom of my leg held together with a meccano set after an accident, I know how much we use our feet without even thinking about them - and sitting here with a broken toe (again:headache:) how much one little digit can hurt so much!

Hope this time you heal properly and quickly . . . keep taking the pain meds, they are there to help - and I hope they do!

Take it easy, and take care
