I have a question regarding pain management.... I am being seen by a pain management doctor and had a horrible pain attack 2 nights ago... so my question is can I been seen and prescribed pain medications if I go to an urgent care center, or an ER if I am in that much pain again.... thanks for the help

Unless you signed an agreement stating that you wouldn't, I don't see why not..

DD has been in pain management and on pain medications at the same time numerous times since her car accident in 2006.. Currently she's not on any pain meds at all, but when there's a severe flare-up or she makes just the wrong move, there has never been a problem with pain meds being prescribed..

I believe you can, I have been in pain management for over a year now and if something extremely sudden or painful comes starts they want you to get it checked out not just sit home and wonder what is going on .

I never signed any contract I would not seek further help for my problem if something gets worse.

Was your pain related to the reason you are in pain management? I would discuss breakthrough pain options with your doctor. Nobody should suffer with a 'horrible pain attack' and feel they cant be treated.

Contracts are written differently depending on your issues and their program. Read your contract.

I wish you many pain-free days and hope you are feeling better now.

I used to have extreme pain flare ups. I was alwys in such agony and went to the ER. I always got pain meds. Thankfully I am on meds so that I don't have the pain anymore. FTR cymbalta is a med for depression but works wonders for pain management!! I have fibromylagia (sp).

Thank you all for your help...I do remember signing something that states that I will not be seen by another doctor for pain medications... not sure if this pertains to an ER doctor or not...

An ER doctor can give you an injection or something right then and there but you can not be given a prescription - this is generally what your contract states. You need to call tomorrow to get a copy of your contract. If you violate this contract even once they can and generally will dismiss you. I used to work for a pain management office and we had to dismiss people all the time for violation of their contract.

Ask for a copy and make sure you understand it. If you have any questions ask for clarification.

We even had some patients dismissed from the practice for getting pain meds from their dentist - so be very careful.

Take a good look at your contract.

I would also call and speak to your pain management MD and ask him/her what to do in a situation where the office is not open and you are having a severe pain attack..can you call the pain MD during off hours and expect a response????
