Paid off 2 bills!!!! Scary topic too...

Sold me van to my parents an was able to pay off 10,000 in bills don't got nothin left over but at least got 2 more bills paid off...

My parents had that $10,000 stashed at their house some place I always knew they kept some money there but at their age daddy will soon be 80 an momma not far behind. At 1 time even I would not have wanted to have paid daddy a surprise visit to easy to get shot that way but he not able to fire guns much anymore.

I pretty sure that was only the top surface to money in house or on property what is hidden outside does not worry me as much as what is in house guess the saving grace is no one who does not know them well would ever believe they not living hand to mouth.

They both carry way more cash than they should it's nothing for daddy to have 500 on him all in his wallet I find it scary yet I know I not goin to change him.

DH an I could not wait to get rid of that 10,000 cash we was both very very nervous

You may want to talk to your parents about what they are hiding in their house. My grandfather (mother's father) hid tons of coins and money in his house. My parents were afraid something would happen to them and they would sell the house with the money still hidden in a hole in the wall or something.
During one visit, my grandfather took my father around the house and showed him where all the money was hidden. There was even a hidden space with a secret lever behind a bookcase!!
As we get older, we sometimes forget, so while they are still "with it", it's a good time to get this info. My dad actually approached it from the perspective of "If anything happened to you, wouldn't you want your daughter to get anything of value and not some stranger?"
Just a thought.

We found like $75k hidden in my grandparents' house when my grandpa died. My grandma didn't even know it was there! Grandpa didn't leave a note or anything in his will telling us where it was, we just found it. We hope that's all of it.

My mom actually just showed DH and I where all the money was hidden in their house just in case.

Maybe ask your parents to write it all down (where its hidden) and put it somewhere they know you will find it if something happens to them.

Assuming you can't convince them to put their money in a bank, they should at least keep it in a fire proof box and be sure that someone they trust knows where it is kept.

I do occasional work for a company that cleans out estates. When we do a clean out, we check EVERY SINGLE THING. I have found:

BIG diamond ear-rings in wall light sconces.
$12,000 in a tool box in the garage
Money hidden everywhere: Under wall to wall carpet, inside books, inside shoes, inside toilet tank....
Rolex Watch inside dirty socks that was under the bed
Coin collection under a stair tread (found that by accident - fell down the stairs and the tread came up)
Nazi Machine gun in the attic inside an old unused chimney

Just to name a few. Too bad we can't keep any of it. Anyway - I have found that

1. Elderly people "need" to have ready cash at hand - my DH Grandmother has WAYYYY too much in her checking account, But remember these people lived through the Depression.

2. Elderly people's mind faculties aren't always all there and in their minds hiding their valuables in their house makes perfect sense. See reason #1.

I agree with the others to talk to your parents or encourage them to get a strongbox so that their cash is safe for an emergency or if one should pass..

On another note, is it possible to sell at least two more of your vehicles to someone other than your parents. I'm just thinking if you are in debt as it sounded from your op, you could turn those cars into cash as well and pay off more bills.

One of DH's friends found $1,000 stashed in a duct pipe in his basement. Previous homeowners died several years before. DH's friend now keeps on the lookout for more "finds" in his house.

In the 2 years since my grandmother passed away, my mom has found a couple grand in cash stashed here and there (usually in $5s or $10s, sometimes $20s, never more than $100 in any one spot). My grandmother was a classic Depression-era packrat, and we're not even 1/4 of the way through clearing out her home.

When we moved into our current home, we found a semi-hidden little cubby over the stairs that had some old Eastern European (German? Austrian?) coins in it. Judging by the age and what we know about the home's history, they had to have belonged to someone in the family that built it (built in 1880, kept in the family until 2001). I guess the owner before us never got up there to look.

This is REALLY common behavior for any person who lived through the great depression, especially if they were children during that time.

My grandmother kept cash in safety deposit boxes instead of in her bank account. This way if the bank went under she could get the cash out of the box instead.

Not necessarily, I just did a search on DixieAmos and she had over 1600! I can't believe they are still there. If you all haven't read them, you really should. She was hysterical. There have been others though the years, too, I just can't remember the names. Not trolls, just posters having a little fun.

I second and third the talking to your parents and advising them to store a little less cash in the house or atleast getting a safe for it. I've had a few friends whos grandparents passed or were moved to nursing homes and they've either found large sums of cash lying around or after cleaning company came through they were told by grandparents where to look for money and it was all gone. better to be sage then sorry.

2. those who are questioning my persona......well at 1 time my DH had more than 70,000 on credit card debit along with owning more than 6 vehicles yes he made payments on half of them as if that is any of YOUR BIZ
