I have maintained the paid AOl in my household since my DH can't seem to get it that you can use IE as your internet provider and use AOL mail anyway. It was worth the $5.99 then $11.99 not to argue.
Last night at 11PM (Sunday night), all my email accounts got this increase notice. Needless to say I was on chat with a rep arguing that I don't need all these services. I don't use McAfee, I don't use Sprint, I don't use LifeLock. The only reason I kept AOL is for ease of internet logon for DH, and possible dialup while at DisneyWorld. After arguing, I changed my plan to $6.99 support & security plan with 5 minutes of dialup per month.
I will do this while I wean DH off of using AOL to get into the internet.

Dear Valued Member,

We are happy to tell you that your AOL plan is about to get even better! On October 1, 2011, you will be upgraded to the new AOL Advantage Premium plan. This plan offers unparalleled support and protection for just $14.95 a month.1

With the AOL Advantage Premium plan, you can take advantage of valuable new benefits like up to $750 per year of extended computer protection2 and a great discount on Sprint that can save you $84 per year on average on select Sprint monthly service plans.4 You are also eligible for comprehensive identity theft protection from LifeLock (valued at $110 a year)3 and receive 5 GB of Norton online backup to protect your most important files and favorite pictures.

The AOL Advantage Premium plan is a great value, saving you approximately $35 per month if you were to purchase these premium services separately:

I haven't paid for AOL in, gee, I dunno, 10 years? My email has been free and I just access it thru internet explorer or other search engine.

I'm dealing with a 66 year old senior who lives on the internet, but can only access it thru AOL browser since he is familiar with it. I'm trying to wean him into using IE browser but so far its not working.

I haven't paid for AOL for YEARS! And I do log in using the AOL software. As long as your internet is provided by someone else (Comcast in my case) you can still use the software.

It took me so long to convience my dh of the same thing. THEN he had all his FAV's saved, I had to show him how to save them.
Finally one day I just cancelled and made him use IE.

Sounds like my parents! They love their AOL!

I finally convinced them that now that they have broadband access and no longer need dial-up, they do not need to pay for the service. They can still use the software if they'd like, but they are throwing money out the window. "Money out the window" got my father's attention and he called up and cancelled....but not before he made the AOL man promise that they will still be able to access their favorites! :rotfl:

You can access AOL exactly like you do with dial up for free if you have broadband. It's how my grandparents get their email etc. He doesn't have to use IE.

Exactly! Just set up AOL.com as his home page. I did this for mom a couple years ago. She couldn't be happier! High-speed internet and her old, familiar AOL. Free.:thumbsup2
