Packing Water in our Luggage?

I'd stop at a convenience store on the way from the airport to WDW and spend a few dollars there.

Back in the day of free bags, we always took an extra bag for the return trip and filled it with disposable items & snacks for flight there. HOWEVER, I always made sure that it was packaged so that leaks would not be a problem for me or other bags around mine.

To each his own. A case of water for $2 beats 24 x $3 for water at Disney. That savings pays for a meal for many families. The Budget Board :worship: savings of $70!

To each his own.

I agree!

We pack water as securely as possible every time and have never had a problem.

If you decide to check your water with your luggage, be mindful of the weight. SWA will charge for bags over 50 pounds and water can get heavy, especially if you freeze it. Just saying!

Be careful with freezing. Water expands when frozen and can burst the bottle.

:lmao:

Water does not get heavier when you freeze it!

Freezing actually makes the water less dense. Thus, if you take a fixed volume of water and compare it to the same volume of ice, the water would actually be heavier.

Yeah, I thought of that after I wrote it. Bad high school science memories coming back!

We've packed water many times and never had a problem. I put 3 bottles in a ziploc and then put them between 2 layers of clothes. If you aren't at your baggage limit, just fill an empty suitcase with water bottles and check it. I would probably pack some beach towels around it.

I know this may come as news... but they sell cases of water in Orlando, too. It's not my usual brand, but it's just as cheap. I think it's Zephyr Hills. DF says it reads like a venereal disease... but it tastes just fine.

:upsidedow

Exactly. Freezing can compromise the integrity of the bottle. One wouldn't necessarily notice until the water was no longer frozen...

I know they sell water in Orlando..but we will be using Magical Express, so unless we pay for a cab to take us to a store or we walk across from Downtown Disney to Hess and carry the case back..its not gonna work to buy water there. I am sure I will figure something out..I was just wondering what others have done in the past.

We always pack a case of water. Just split the bottles between 2 checked pieces and wrap the water bottles in 2 garbage bags. I have never had an issue.

I have to say that I am amazed at how many people actually bring water with them. Not saying there's anything wrong with it, just surprising, that's all.

Of all the surprising things people do, bringing water to Orlando, FL on an airplane is one of them. Why?

ok mr smart guy - what weighs more - a ton of bricks or a ton of feathers? :-)

Well....a ton of anything is still a ton. But, if you take a measurement of water, and then change it's properties..say to ice..then that same measurement is going to weigh differently. A pound of water is exactly the same as a pound of ice. But, can you imagine what a ton of feathers would look like???

I don't think I would ever pack water. There's already too many of us with too much stuff. LOL We use reusable water bottles(Klean Kanteens) and we have Watergeek filters that go inside of them. It worked great last time we went. We just used the soda fountain ice and water and the filter removed yucky stuff and all taste. In past trips, we have ordered from WeGoShop because we get breakfast foods there for every trip we take with the kids anyway.

Freezing or heating water in plastic bottles is never a good idea. :thumbsup2

We flew Southwest last time as well, so we took six free checked bags for the three of us. In one bag, we packed nothing but water, non-porous snacks, and individual 8oz Horizon organic milk boxes (that do not require cooling). The bag was a half pound under the 50 pounds allowed without paying additional poundage fees. We measured it at home to ensure this. Use a regular scale and 4 cans of food. Measure the food cans first, then subtract their weight once the luggage is on top of them. Allow a one pound margin of error. Everything arrived okay. Do not pack clothes or anything you would not want to get wet in this bag (just in case you spring a leak)! On the return trip, we used this bag for souvenirs and WDW snacks (since we had the deluxe dining plan).

This allowed us to use the Magical Express (free) without having to rent a car, order from an online grocer, use a car service, pay a shipper or take a taxi to a store. It also saved a lot of money and allowed us to use snack credits for WDW treats rather than milk or water in the parks. I suggest trying it since you are not paying for the extra bag. Anywhere you can save is a good idea, since you can use those savings on a cool treat or souvenir instead.

We are using FL Tours on the next trip. It includes a free 30 minute grocery stop. You can do this if you are not using the Magical Express.

I fly Southwest all the time- 2 free bags- I make sure to use one suitcase for me and a box- must be under 50lbs- for my water, juiceboxes, wine, vodka, kahlua.
I just put the magical express sticker on it too- a little bubblewrap- never had a problem- it must be checked. they always open it- that's ok

I'm with you. I would understand if they were going to a place like Haiti, or Sudan... but WDW?! Yes, you will save a few dollars. But you risk damaging everything else in your bag, as well as every bag near yours in the cargo hold, should yours break.

I would like to meet the person that packed liquids in their suitcase that got all my stuff wet. I would love to hear how they wrapped it. No one here ever reported a problem but it does happen and I have the luggage to prove it.
