If I want to bring a small soft-sided cooler-for some soda and beer, would it be best to carry it on board the plane with the beverages already packed? Or can I put cans of soda/beer in with my checked luggage? I would put them in zip lock bags - just in case?

Also, is it okay to put any food in my checked luggage? Things like Pop Tarts and Trail Mix? I'd rather not weight myself down on the plane, but will if necessary!

I've never brought any beverages on board a plane before, so I can't help you out with your question. I will give this a friendly bump in case someone can help you. Anyone?

I packed some food in a cooler, taped it up and checked it with my luggage. I didn't have any problems with it. I would suggest a solid cooler, not soft sided. Everything inside will get beat up or broken. Since the food was gone on the way back, I packed it with souverniers (sp). It was cheap enough to just leave there too if I didn't have a use for it. I paid only about $10 for it.
If you feel safer letting the airlines look inside first before checking it, just tape it up after. I used the reinforced packing tape. Just bring a roll with you and put it in your carry-on when you're done. In case you need it on the way back.
Good Luck!!

I brought water on the plane. If you're planning to bring a cooler filled with beer and soda, they may question it because of the cabin pressure. Just wait until you reach Florida to buy soda and beer...though you will not be able to bring alcohol into the parks.

I had an experience with pop cans bursting inside my luggage. Now, I don't bring anything like that. It weighs too much, and I can take the bus to Walmart or Walgreens etc. to buy water, pop and such. My suitcase is heavy enough without adding extra pop or beer. I do pack nuts, crackers, microwave popcorn, and such in my suitcase.

I am a bottled water drinking fanatic. I usually pack a 24 pack with me and buy some more when I run out. I've packed the water overseas twice as well and never had a problem with it leaking. Besides, if it does, I figure its just water. Plus you get a great workout carrying the luggage through the airport! :-)

I don't know about checking soda. I've had soda in my carry-on or in my hand, but never checked it. I think I'd be worried about changes in pressure where the luggage is.

About the food, I've packed nutri-grain and cereal bars in my checked luggage. No problems. Just be prepared for smushage in a soft suitcase. It didn't happen to me, but I was prepared for it.

On this trip as with others in past we are planning on taking lunchables for the kids to eat on the plane...we usually take our own drinks (not pop usually juice or tea) right on the plane in our carry on luggage...we have never had a problem...we don't pack food in our checked luggage though...we usually wait til we are there and then on a off park night (usually first night and middle of week) we stop by walmart and or publix and buy extra snacks. but i don't think there is any problem taking food on the plane..we have done it before and are doing it again.

I've never taken liquids wioth me, but I packed an entire suitcase with snacks. As my DS2 needs a seat anyways. So he gets 2 pieces of luggage. We then just replaced it with its. I even brought peanut butter and jelly. I then just bought, Bread, cheese, juice, milk when we arrived..

Also one thaing that we used a lot on the trip was, ziploc bags, and scissors. Cutting tags off, opening new toys.. So now I never go any where with out putting both thost items in my checked luggage. Also a roll of scotch tape.
