Packing Soda AdvicePlease

We are leaving for Orlando in less then 3 weeks!!! I remember packing soda last time in our carry-on (prior to the ban on liquid). I know that I've read threads of people packing soda in an empty suitcase with no problems. DH disagrees and is absolutely certain it will explode. It's killing me to spend $4,99 for 12 cans of soda at Garden Grocer when I can buy the same 12 pack for $2.00 at home.

SOME ONE PLEASE RE-ASSURE DH THAT SODA WILL BE SAFE IN AN EMPTY SUITCASE (I WOULD EVEN PUT THEM IN A BIG ZIP;LOCK BAGGIE!)

I would wrap up the soda tightly, in a liquid proof covering (so nothing could leak out). You may save $2.99 per 12 pack, but cleaning leaked soda out of your luggage will be a major pain.

With the limits on weight for luggage, do you really want to use up your weight allowance with soda?

If I did pack soda like that, I'm not sure that I would use cans as I'd worry they'd smack up against each other and break open. cans or bottles will not explode. Some luggage compartments are even pressurized.

Packing soda advice: Please don't. Have you ever watched planes being loaded and unloaded? Plus, if one or more containers does break, it likely won't just make a mess of the suitcase in which you packed it, but also the luggage around that bag - and odds are, those suitcases will belong to other passengers and will contain clothing.

While yes, it will cost you more from Garden Grocer, it's still only forty-five cents a can.

I agree, I would not do it. It's not worth the hassle and the risk to your luggage & others luggage to save a couple bucks.

I agree- and if it makes you feel better at least FL has no return deposit...please buy your soda on site in a gift shop or through GG or walk to HEss.

Your DH has a point. Why risk it damaging other peoples luggage? Plus I'm not sure TSA will even allow it Go to Walmart they usually have sales.

I agree with PP. I don't know how safe a carbonated drink would be in your luggage. Better play it safe and pack RUM.

If your family drinks a lot of soda, consider getting one of those refillable mugs. For $12 you can drink all that you want AND you get a cool souvenior cup to bring home and use bringing some of the magic into your everyday existence!

Wrong answer. Plastic bottles are far more likely to have the contents leak under pressure. While it's difficult for a can to "explode," it can happen if it's somehow punctured.

On the other hand the bottles expand and contract, and the tops can actually be forced off. Don't believe me? Try putting a plastic bottle of Coke in your freezer to see what happens.

OP, please don't pack ANY soda. I've had a bag and clothign ruined by someone who did this, had it leak through their suitcase and into mine that was below it.

All right, all right. I won't do it, but it's going to kill me I do understand that it could explode and leak onto other people's luggage, but I was going to put the cans into ziplock bags. In any event, I'll use Garden Grocer and if need be, get to Hess to pick up any extra

Ah, c'mon, it's not gonna kill ya! Like I said, from Garden Grocer it'll cost you $.45 a can, or $.0375 per ounce.
In comparison, a 20 ounce bottle of Coke onsite will cost you ten cents an ounce. That's a savings of over SIXTY PERCENT, PLUS your time!

Now, even if you packed it really well (inside individual zipper bags inside other individual zipper bags inside guaranteed leakproof plastic storage containers inside a separate suitcase) remember all the tossing that bag will likely go through, BEFORE you open any of the containers!

See, here's the thing....Every trip I get so caught up in the planning of the 'perfect trip' that I go off and either pack a ton of food items (non-perishables, non-liguid) in my checked bags. Then, I make an order from one of the grocery delivery services for that stuff I can't bring down with me. And you know what happens?? I end up leaving a ton of stuff behind when I head home. I finally realized that I'm on vacation, that I don't need to worry about that extra $150 I'm spending on food at WDW. I don't need to have fresh fruit, boxes of cereal, soda, coffee...whatever...in my room. I realize there are those who like to cook/eat in their rooms while at WDW. But I don't think it's worth it to stress over the difference of $2.50 a six-pack of soda. Been there, done that...and mousekeeping at BWV's is very happy I did. They got a lot of unopened cereal, soda, water!!!

Now let me tell you my story, since I haven't been around much lately!

For those of you who missed my epic trip report on another website, I recently spent much of the summer in Germany, India, France, and Germany again for work.

After more than a month in India, I went to France for a few days at Disneyland Paris with another DIS member before going back to work. Due to the monsoon season, I was rerouted all around India, and it took me 36 hours to reach Paris, soaked in sweat and filth from travelling in 40 degree (Celcius) weather.

On arrival - no luggage. When it did come a day later, both pieces (which were brand new high end luggage, by the way) were soaked with some kind of liquid. All of my clothes in both pieces were damp, and smelled of an odd stench. I had to put EVERY SINGLE ITEM of clothing into dry cleaning in Paris as there was no way I could wear those things. EVERY SINGLE ITEM that I had with me for six weeks of travel.

I have no way of knowing what happened; it may have been fumigation liquids (I know that airlines coming to/from Asia sometimes use them, and we were infested with bugs at one point of the trip). It MAY also have been someone else's pop/soda etc. After three days of travelling in such high heat, whatever had dripped onto/into my bags had begun to turn bad, and the smell can only be described as a combination of mold, chemicals, rot, and any other bad smell you can imagine.

That may be an extreme story, but if YOUR pop bursts or leaks, I don't want it on MY clothes. That has happened to several of us here, not just the extreme form I mentioned above.

While I would not bother bringing soda to DW from NY, I travel to Europe almost every month, and always bring back a six pack of a soda not found in the US. It is called Sinalco, and my son loves it. Have also put wine in luggage as well.
