Packing light - what does that mean to you?

For us it means not letting DH pack for 3 weeks when we are only going for 1. Not letting him pack the entire content of the medicine cabinet. bringing clothes that can do double duty. Limiting the # of shoes he brings. I go relativley light to compensate. Limiting DD15 and her father to only 2 bathingsuits. DSs pack fairly light.Telling the entire family not to pack a beach towel as the resort supplies them. Putting DH and DDs suitcase on the scale BEFORW leaving the house.

A thing that helps me with some of the bulk is taking our own pillowcases without the pillows. That way I'll still use the hotel pillows, but I have the comfort of having my own case over it. It just makes me feel better.

Wow, who resurected this Methusela thread???

:rotfl: I saw the title of this and somewhere in the back of my mind a memory stirred of a thread I had started many moons ago! Didn't actually expect it to really come back to haunt me...!!

My Owners Locker was totally full by the time I had finished packing it on our last visit, but I still don't think I will be travelling particulary lightly for our next trip in a couple of weeks! :teeth:

We travel with 7 people (2 adults, 2 teenagers and 3 kids) so we HAVE to pack light since there isn't much room in the vehicle! (Luggage goes on top of the car - we have a Pilot.) Now that we have DVC (W&D and kitchen), when we get there, we hit the store for groceries, sunscreen, etc. As soon as clothing is taken off, it's thrown in the washer. I think we did probably 3 loads of laundry for a 6-day trip. It was cool in March, though, so we had to pack jackets and jeans. Next trip most likely early June, so shouldn't need jeans or jackets, which will make packing light even easier.

We are staying for 12 nights and I certainly intend to make full use of the washing machine (especially for the children's stuff!). So I'm trying to take the good advice of "packing light" For myself, should I stick to the tried and tested method of "one on, one off and one in the wash" Is that still too much - or too little?? I don't want to get bored of my clothes!!!

So I hope I'm not getting too personal, but much stuff would you pack for this length of stay?! :scratchin

Packing light to me means wearing the same outfit twice during a trip so 12 nights would yield me packing 6 outfits.

Now that we have our Owners Locker packing light for us = packing in 1 std. size carry-on for each of us (plus of course our "personal article"). My REAL packing light test tho will be for Europe next summer for 2 weeks WITHOUT our Owners Locker!! I already miss it!! Hoping to keep to 1 carry-on and only 1 large checked bag per person (I'll be holding my breath now for the next 11 months!!:rotfl:) I do everything possible to avoid having to do any laundry on vacation. That is NOT how I want to spend my time!!

Wow, I probably shouldn't even answer this question for fear I'll embarass myself. I'm definitely not one to take advice from when it comes to packing light.

Let's see, last trip was two weeks and it was just me and one of my sons. I had a 42" bag plus carry on and my son the same. I consider I did better than the previous trip. That time it was myself and all three of my boys and we had two bags each, two rolling carry ons and three back packs. I justify the overpacking due to the fact that we were 11 days in WDW followed by a 7 day Disney cruise, so I had to pack for the land portion, so shorts during the day and dressier outfits for table service meals plus formal attire for the captain's dinner. It was crazy! But that was before we bought DVC.

That being said, I guess I always want to be prepared for different situations plus we usually travel in the summer and take two showers meaning we need two outfits a day. But I've vowed to do better next time around. Although I don't want to do chores on vacation, I find it super easy to just throw a load of laundry in the wash in the morning before heading out to the parks. When we come back to the resort for a break, I can just throw the laundry into the dryer. Easy, right?

So now for advice. I'd say pack only three bottoms but extra tops/shirts. That way you won't get bored with the same outfits but won't overpack either. Either way, have a great time on your next trip!:)

I'm sorry Bex. I just did a search on packing light and your thread was one I wanted to reply to. I didn't look at the date. Was I supposed to start a new thread if it's the same topic? I'm very new to this still don't know the nuances-sorry.
I just can't believe people need so much stuff. I guess you can't just say anymore "I'll buy it there" that's not an option anymore for most people so I guess you just pack it.

No need to apologise :goodvibes I'm sure it doesn't matter when the thread was started, if it's relevant to what you're interested in finding out about. It was just quite strange for me, seeing a thread of mine back from the depths of time!!

To us, packing light means that it has to fit in your carry on. We don't check bags anymore.

Were local and drive so packing light doesn't mean much. I take my Keurig Mini Single Cup Coffee Maker, an iPad, Apple AirPort Express Wireless Router, munchies and anything else we think we need.
