Packing food in your suitcase ?

I have a couple of suggestions;

I would mail to the resort, make sure to put your info on the outside of the box, ressie #, and arrival date, and such. Some friends of ours always go this route and are happy. I don't think they have ever had a problem. I think that they have shipped, diaper and wipes, baby food, breakfast items, snacks and such.

Not sure now you are getting to resort, but you might want to think about a car service with one stop, to grab what you need. If you stop at a Publix, you can look up the store you would be stopping at, and print a list by aisle and look at the sales ad and bring coupons along for added savings. I would divide up the list and you take one part and DH take the other. We drive but always make a stop at publix before heading to the resort.

Just a quick thought on other ways we save money. Even with DDXDP, we like to use our credits wisely. .. So...We pick up bottled water, adult beverages, soft drinks, juice, ham and cheese from the deli, fruit, crackers or chips, grab some cookies to. We save a ton of money with the water, for the 2 of us we get a 24 pack last 7 night for about $4.00 ish, we take one out in the morning, and refill at counter service's, and throw away the bottle and take a fresh one out for the evening. As far as the ham and cheese and fruit we take that to the pool, we learned that our kids would eat this type of finger food before racing off to the pool again. So now that they are grown and starting families of their own we still enjoy this, also adult beverages or really any beverage at pool side are very costly. Just make sure to put the adult beverages in a plastic container for pool side. If you have a foldable cooler or insulated bag this works great for the pool and even the parks.

I hope this helps, Have a magical time

This - great post !

A note on mailing to resorts - if it is a "convention resort" CSR and CR for sure as well Swan/Dolphin they will charge you to receive a package even if your not a convention guest.

As noted below a town car service will provide a complimentary grocery stop when requested in advance and only if you book a r/t.

Another option is grocery delivery - we use wegoshop. com for grocery delivery and have great service. For a reasonable (IMHO) delivery fee they will shop for and deliver your list to the resort - they can deliver beer, wine and alchohol as well. I find they shop the stores with the sales that best meet my list ! Others here in the Dis report great service from garden grocer.

If you do decide to pack liquids - please double bag them to avoid damage to your checked items as well as others clothing etc. Even water can cause damage! Also watch for weight, some luggage restrictions start at 40lbs per bag.

I had to throw away my unopened jar of peanut butter :sad1:

i had to throw away my pb too, but mine was open (both ways). it made it down, but tsa in orlando made me throw it away :confused3

other than that we have brought lots of food down and never had a problem. even cream cheese packets before.

we usually bring bagels, cereal (the individual cups), pop tarts, fruit snacks and some other little snacks for the room.

we try to have breakfast in the room or something that we can make quick in the food court and then eat waiting for the bus.

just read the rest of the thread, we usually bring juice and milk boxes as well, always in the packed luggage. we havent had any issues with them popping.

PB would be considered a "gel" by the TSA, like the pudding cup they confiscated from my mother. she swore they were just hungry and making up the gel rule.:lmao:

i always pack snack bars and things like raisins and nuts. i eat GF so in disney its easy but when i travel elsewhere i need to have my own snacks just in case. my only tip is chocolate does not always travel well, the temperature in your check luggage can greatly vary on its journey.

as others stated if it is that much food you may want to look into grocery delivery, especially if you do want water. i never bring more than some protein bars and snacks.

We fly southwest and so have free luggage.

I usually pack a duffel bag full of whatever junk/breakfast food the kids want. I take them and allow them free reign as long as it won't melt! The nice part of the duffel is I can either use it to bring home all our new t shirts or it can fold up and come home inside a different suit case.

Along with the food bag I will order from wegoshop. I have them deliver water, soda, beer and lunch meat and a cheep cooler.

Between the 2 we are set for a week of breakfast, late night snacks and lunches at the hotel. With 3 teens it really makes a difference in the cost of feeding them and really makes it easy to get out the door in the am. It is also relaxing to leave the park for a bit mid day and have a picnic by the pool.

My kids are way past the character meals. We enjoy a couple sit down meals in the parks over the week. Each day we will probably still buy some kind of snack (like ice cream) and a counter service meal. I always take the packets to add to the water and we use them in place of buying bottled water or soda in the parks.

As we have gone to Disney more often we find the "thrill" of eating Disney food has worn off and we are happy to have simple snacks and counter service combined with favorites from home.

I think it was the ziplock bag of Tim Horton's coffee that got my luggage checked. When I got it the luggage tag was dusted for fingerprints. I can't remember if that year I also packed laundry soap in ziplocks bags or not.

I heard later on some program, that the dogs are trained to sniff out coffee and something else (laundry soap?) which I guess helps cover up the smell of drugs.

We just got back a couple weeks ago and I checked a suitcase full of food with no problems! We had bread (packed in a plastic shoe box!), pb, jelly, granola bars, fruit roll ups, pop tarts, cereal and some other stuff. We did find a note that it had been searched but nothing was missing. On the tsa site, tsa.gov, there is a box under the 3-1-1 info that you can type anything in. It lets you pick a specific item and it will tell you if it needs to be checked only, can be carried on or checked, or not allowed at all. It's very helpful! :)

TSA in general will disallow anything that "conforms" to the shape of its container and will not hold its shape outside of it. Like peanut butter.

Thanks for all the great advice re: the food suitcase; definitely some things I would have never thought of! Oh, the joys of being a PB-stealing, coffee searching TSA agent...

Mine (coffee and laundry soap) was in checked luggage. Forgot to post that last time.

The only time they searched a bag in front of us was when I forgot I packed an Eye Spy bottle for my niece to play with on the airplane. I guess when it got scanned they saw a bottle and had me take it out. When they saw what it was they let us through with it.

I always pack coffee and food and I have had my bag searched every time. No big deal.

Last trip I ordered water and coke from staples and had them deliver it to my resort. The only problem...the minimum allowed order was a case of each..way too much for my solo trip.:lmao:

I gave half of the water and 3/4 of the coke away. On the positive side I think I still didn't pay much more that I would have buying a refillable drink mug for the resort and a few bottles of water in the park. It was nice to have it in the room waiting for me each night and I was able to spread a little pixie dust by sharing with others.

As long as you don't have any liquids or gels, you don't HAVE to pack food in your checked bag, do you? I have a rolling soft sided cooler packed and ready to go for our trip to Hawaii this weekend. I have packets of oatmeal, granola bars, pringles potato chips, raisins, nuts, graham crackers, hershey bars, marshmallows, uncle bens microwave rice packets, dry packets of meat marinade (like taco seasoning packets). I was planning on bringing this as my carryon. I picked items carefully so they wouldn't violate the liquids rule.

Are the marshmallows ok?

I put a small jar of nutella in our checked bag, because I read that nutella is considered a gel.

Also, I bought a pack of those plastic medicine daily boxes (M T W Th F) from the dollar store and filled up each opening with salt, pepper, cayenne, chicago steak seasoning. Do you think those will be allowed?

Maggie

we found that our checked bag was always searched when there was a can of coffee in it.
we put the coffee in a zip-lock, and viola! the "coffee" suitcase was left unsearched from then on. we assumed the xray could not go through the can, so a search was neccessary.
another ordinary item that will likely get your luggage searched is a candle (not birthday candles;))...TSA agents informed us that candles have the same consistantly as certain b-making ingredients.
the random bag searches don't bother us - a little inconvenience is certainly worth a more secure flight, imho:)

For Amazon Prime members another great option is ordering from Amazon.com to have it delivered to your room. The 2 day shipping is free and we have done this every trip for everything from diapers to breakfast foods, including shelf stable milk. We order 3 days before arrival and the package is in our room waiting for us when we get there. There isn't much that they don't sell and it's so nice not to have to worry about packing it in our luggage.
