Packing Cubes - yes or no?

Wait I'm confused, Disney Cruiseline limits the amount of luggage you can bring?

I don't know if they adhere to it, but I believe it says one suitcase per person, as well as your carry on things.

We use Ebag packing cubes we find them invaluable for the cruise and resort. We each have our own colour. Mainly it's an organised thing so we know that's our pants, that's our tops etc. But also I like them for hygiene reasons. I don't like the idea of putting my nice clean clothes in a drawer or shelf where I don't know how clean it is. Also they have carry handle to take to the laundry.

I don't know what I did before packing cubes. I use shacke pak. One thing I caution you on using them with flying. I had tons of room in my suitcase for more stuff. But my weight limit was right on the bubble.

Though to be fair, the Cruiseline site does not say that is all you are entitled to as we all know the porters will have extras at the drop off point at the terminal. Not sure how it works for bus riders.

We have taken 6 bags for 3 people previously. Though 1.5 luggage was just with fish extender stuff in it.

They do add weight, so consider that.
We use them for the little things, sock, underwear, etc. Each person has their own for this.
My husband SWEARS by the folder clothing holders by Eagle Creek. He's a big guy, and it keeps his shirts from looking horrible. These are awesome.

no, not really. You just have to have space to store your luggage. Nesting luggage will take less space. Under the bed will hold 4 - 6 suitcases easily, but not the very large suitcase (50 lbs of clothes and shoes in only 66% of the suitcase).

Yes yes yes! I found them to be very helpful for things like spending a day or two at WDW before the cruise - I'll put the outfits and bathing suits in the cubes just for the pre-cruise stay and then that way we don't have to mess up our entire suitcase.... the other thing I like about them is that it is for easy unpacking in the stateroom, each cube gets their own person so I go to the person's location in the stateroom and just unload their clothes in a drawer. The only down side I have seen is that I feel like you end up packing more with the cubes and so can add to the weight of the suitcase so I have bought a suitcase scale so I don't go over the 50 lbs.

Thanks. I wonder where I got that "1 suitcase per person" from? I won't have more than that (flying), but I do read about others that do, so it makes more sense.

I used them for the first time for our cruise and Disney World vacation last summer. I loved them. They kept me organized and I had more space in my suitcases. I will definitely used them again on future trips.

We actually use baggies as our packing cubes. This way, we can suck all the air out of the baggies and have more room for items. Just need to be wary of the wrinkles it can cause.

I would like to add the suggestion of a combination approach. For ages now I have packed using gallon ziploc bags. It was particularly useful when the kids were little: each day's clothes would go into its own baggie. Underwear, shirt, and socks fit fold together in a gallon bag. It meant even the littlest of us could just grab a bag and be dressed in the morning! This last trip, I didn't bother adding the underwear, but it was SO nice to be able to rummage through my suitcase and grab just the top or pants or skirt I wanted without worrying about messing up the rest of the folding job. Everything just slid around intact in its own little bag.

That said, I bought my daughter packing cubes for this last trip, and I can definitely see the use! Being able to grab a Barcelona bag with 2 nights worth of stuff and my toiletries sounds awesome. Similarly, if packing 2 people's stuff in one suitcase, those cubes would be ideal.

For our cruise, I do believe I will combine the two techniques. <rubs her hands in organizational glee>

I just weighed one of the largest ones I have, using a luggage scale, and it didn't even register. I have 20 some pieces, which all pack into one medium sized one for storage, and they only weigh 2.6 lbs altogether. While of course they will add a bit, weight is not something I would worry about with packing cubes. They are made of light nylon.

So for those of you who love the packing cubes, how do you find a set online that will fit just right in your suitcase? In the pics, it always looks like a perfect little puzzle with no wasted space. But not all suitcases are the same dimensions, so how do you make sure they will fit in a way to actually maximize your space before ordering?

Or can they be arranged in enough different ways that it is not really an issue? I just know we're going to need to use all the space we have.

I too, vote no. You can accomplish the same end result with zip lock bags. Or, when I get linens and they come in the vinyl, zip pouches, save them up. They serve the same purpose and are sturdy.

I love the packing cubes from ebags, I think I have 6 colors now in small, medium, large squares plus "thin" (long) ones - I couldn't travel without them! Some of them stay packed at all times so I can just grab them for a short weekend trip - room supplies(power strips, night lights etc), toiletries, first aid supplies etc. I don't pack a lot of them with clothes since Pooh sized clothes don't fit well but socks, bras, undies etc are great to pack in them, swimsuits/coverups in a large one works great too. I love the handle on them to grab and go when needed, it keeps the drawers in hotel rooms neat etc.

I started with an order of three different sizes. It came as a package. I found that they worked so well for us that I ordered lots more in various colors. You can't go wrong with the three standard size package, you will always find something to do with each one. I suggest you start with that but not everyone will agree. At least when you have the there sizes you can then figure out your own needs and order more in what ever size you feel suits you best going forward. What I use/have probably would be different than what you may need. With packing cubes each family will be different and will use them differently (as you can probably tell by the above posts). I pack using a different color for each person. Some pack using a different color for each day.
As for maximizing space, they do fit like a puzzle and I seldom pack them in the same way twice. you will find if your going for a weekend you will pack them in one way, if your going for a week you will pack them in another way. If there are two people traveling or ten people traveling, you will pack them in differently. Just know that they will pack nicely in any size/type suitcase. I have even used them in a duffle bag and loved how tidy it all was when I unpacked.

This is brilliant! This sounds much better than baggies to me because they have depth and seems like they would not wrinkle the clothes as much. I have always saved those, but never knew why, LOL.

Great to know, I was worried that they only worked best when packed in one particular way. I'm glad to hear they are so versatile!

I love them and use them every trip -- even if it's just a road trip. They make it so easy to pack all the tees in one, shorts in another, etc. and just grab a cube and sort!

What I love about the long ones is that they are great for underwear and socks, and fill in that space at the bottom of the suitcase between the struts!

We have never brought one suitcase per person LOL. And Disney has never stopped us. I know they don't allow you to bring water in the checked luggage, but we have never been told we had too many bags.

I love my packing cubes from Ebags. I do have to be careful because I can squeeze a lot in there and if I'm using a medium sized suitcase I can go overweight fairly easy. They mainly appeal to me because I like having things organized. I like putting all the Pirate night costumes/accessories in one color, formal night in another color, etc. It's so much better than digging through everything. No, they aren't a necessity but if you're an organizer you will probably like them. I also just put them in the drawers in the stateroom instead of unpacking everything.
