Quick Question for Everyone!

I am getting ready to make a Winnie The Pooh dress for my girls for a Crystal Palace meal. I am going to make the Criss-Cross Dress from YCMT but I had a question about the skirt part of it.

I want the dress to be twirlier than the pattern calls for, so I am going to use two 45" pieces for the skirt portion (so there will be side seams on each side). I still gather the old fashioned way (using elastic thread or dental floss) and wondered if you thought I could sew the side seams together and after that is done do the zig-zag gathering in the front and in the back (so that it is seperate) so that it would gather more evenly (I struggle to get my gathers even)? I am thinking that this will be my last project before the baby comes but we'll see how much I get done!

It seems like I'm always asking this but, Jham, is that from a pattern?

Yes you can. I have done that before to try and get my gathers even.

It's a sort of a frankenpattern. I used Carla's stripwork jumper bodice (didn't want to deal w/3 layers, only wanted 2), Carla's simply sweet ruffled straps, and I made up the skirt.

I think it would work that way.

Sooooo cute!!! I dont think there is a Handcocks anywhere near Philly, is there?????

I live just over the state line in DE and fabric is hard to come by. The Walmart in Kennet Square still carries disney fabric - I was there yesterday and the lady said it's still coming in on the trucks so she wasn't sure when they'd stop carrying fabric. The closest Hancocks are Pasadena, MD and Harrisburg, PA and I won't be making that trip with the price of gas.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I spent a good hour or so this morning commenting on everything from the last 10 pages. Then, I went outside to plant some flowers. I came back in to see if there was anything new posted and I don't see the huge multi-quote that I posted this morning on here. HOW did that happen? I know I clicked "submit". I wonder if it had too many pictures and I didn't notice. Then, Henry got on the computer and shut my window (I'm ALWAYS telling him not to shut my windows), and erased my multi-quote. I'm sure you all wanted to hear about this, but it's so frustrating when that happens!

Anyway, I need to get off the computer again because I have to get ready for Sawyer's birthday party tomorrow. Rest assured that if you posted something, I commented on it!

Bad, BAD Henry! I guess now you're just gonna have to punish him. Maybe another trip to WDW will teach him not to ever EVER shut your windows again! :rotfl2:

I almost always use 2 45" pieces of fabric for my skirts. I like the twirly factor! I sew the sides and gather the whole thing, but before adding my gathering stitches, I mark the top & and skirt in quarters. So I use the side seams and mark them both half way again. That way its more manageable to gather evenly. I only do a quarter at a time. Then go onto the next quarter until I have evenly distributed the gathers and pin them in place. I find it takes a bit longer, but my gathers look better!

I hope that makes sense!

To everyone else, WOW! is all I can say. :worship: Everyday the outfits are cuter & cuter! If it would ever cool down out here, I would get some things finished!

We saw Mary Poppins!!!!! It was so cool. I actually cried when I saw how much Riley was loving it. Being sick for so long has been really tough on her and I was so glad that she got to have her trip. We tried to make it extra cool for her. We even took her to Sephora and bought her her first real makeup (sparkly lip gloss!) and then bought her first "real fake Coach purse" as she called it in China town the next day for her to carry it in. I usually hate fake bags, but for a 10 year old it was fun. We actually got in a van to buy it!:rolleyes1

Oh WOW...Mary Poppins!!! That sounds awesome, I am so glad Riley enjoyed it!!!! I have to agree with whoever said it....getting into a VAN to buy a purse sounds SCARY!!!:scared1:

I was in China meeting Morgan. I will never forget seeing that little face for the first time. :lovestruc
Awwww how sweet!!

Gotta be quick, DH is in a hurry to get home... well it IS like 1 am...

Ohhhhh I love how this turned out. So cute!!!!

So many lovely, lovely creations worn by darling children posted lately!

I have a question about embroidery machines:

I'm confused...About a year ago an acquaintance did a few pieces for me on her machine. The faces and everything are all filled in with thread, not fabric. They're cute, but they aren't "applique." How does one use an embroidery machine to do applique where the machine stitches the outline and other details only and doesn't fill in the entire space with thread? Do all of the machines have this capability or only certain models? Are those designs what people are referring to when they say they purchased a design from an ebay seller? I assume there are sellers who know how to digitize and they digitize the outline and details only? If so, how does one place the fabric accurately so that the stitching covers the edges perfectly like it would if you were doing hand applique?

I appreciate the NY/LV votes that I have received. I think that I pretty much have DH on board for a trip to NY. I grew up in LV and we went there for our Honeymoon, so I don't really want to see it again. I want to see something else. We are even thinking of flying. :cool1: and :faint: None of us has ever flown anywhere.

You've never flown?!?! OMG! DO IT!!!! I live in Boston and I fly to NY!!!! (I drive most of the week for work so when I don't have to drive...I don't) If you fly into JFK, you'll be right on the subway and can get around from there.

Hi ladies, just dropping by :) I just started working full-time again this past week so I haven't had a lot of time to read and just skimmed through now.. Awesome creations as always, this thread is always so inspiring for me :cloud9: Today i've been cutting out 4 YCMT handbag patterns since my fusible fleece arrived recently, hoping to get them all sewn up tomorrow!
Ooh also: This week I booked our vacation!! I'm soo excited to visit California    We're staying in several different places (flying in to San Francisco and out of Las Vegas) including Anaheim for 4 nights at the Fairfield Inn, anyone stayed there? It seems like a good location to walk to DL, ahh I can't wait! :yay:

We stayed at the Fairfeild the last time I went to DL. It was really nice. It was the first hotel that I ever saw with two seperate rooms.

We've stayed at the Fairfield Inn, Lizzbear, and we were happy with it. It is an easy walk to DL. I can't tell you anything about the pool because we didn't use it and didn't even see it, but the rooms were clean and the service seemed to be good. We had very little contact with any of the staff because we were out of our room early in the AM and didn't get back until late in the evening, but on the occasions when we did encounter one of them they were pleasant.

I would also really like to know the answer to this as well. I want to try to do a cinderella applique, but i am scared b/c it seems like every one I see has machine embrodiered features. The eyes really scare me I just don't think i will be able to get them right with hand embrodery which is what i have been doing for details. My machine is not even computerized so I am limited to 3 zig zag sizes.

Thanks for the positive reviews, much appreciated :) It seems to get good ones on Tripadvisor and the price was right, as long as it's clean and secure then we're good :goodvibes

On a different topic: Does anyone know where I could get this fabric from? I'd prefer cotton but would go for flannel too.

There isn't any on eBay and Hancocks' website doesn't ship internationally..

My embroidery machine will do appliques if the design calls for it. You would put a peice of fabric in that would fit the area, the machine outlines what it needs. Then you cut it out. After that the machine will do all the fill in work.

Princessmom29, have you tried free hand machine quilting? You drop the feed dog, and use a quilting foot. It gives you the chance to move the fabric anyway you want. Then you can do the outlines you need. It can be hard to do until you get practiced. Just take it slow.
