September 11, 2004- Disney really feels like a dream that will never come

Well, in the beginning there was Ivan. A ferocious storm near Cuba that looked like it would be ending our trip before it even began. The past night I cried my eyes out unsure if we would even be going. Since we drive, DH said that we would leave when he got home from work and stay over in GA, and see what the forecast said at that point on Saturday night. DH called at 11 am and reassured me that we would indeed be leaving. He got home at 12:30 pm and at 12:50 pm we were on the road. We reached the NC border at 2:50 pm, and at 2:52 pm we saw our first Disney sign! Actually, it was a sign for discount tickets for WDW and Universal/IOA. DH and I were beginning to slowly dissolve into our Disney mind frames, although I was still hesitant if we would even be arriving in Florida.

DH and I passed the time by finding shapes and animals in the AWESOME clouds left over from a previous storm including: the AFLAK duck, the loch ness monster, a gnome sitting with his knees raised to his chin, and an elephant with his trunk raised high. I knew it was a good sign when I saw that elephant because a raised trunk is good luck ;)

Ahh, another billboard for “Official Discount Outlet” which was selling those discount tickets. I swear we saw a million of them! Sheesh, how much money does this company make to have SO many boards all through NC?!

We saw our first South of the Border sign around 3:45 pm. This is a staple for us that have a lot of history. If you are not aware of SOTB, it is this…area, right past the border of NC and SC on the SC side. Cheesy is the only word I can think of that describes it. Many many many years ago, my father blind folded my mother and took her here on their 1st anniversary. Growing up, we always stopped here on trips to WDW. Now, DH and I do the same. We get gas, and buy root beer, and candy cigarettes.
Back on the road, I knew that NOAA’s next report would be at 5 pm, so I called my mother to have her tell me what the forecast was. Wrong decision. All she kept saying was Ivan was going to go right over us in FL. This wasn’t helping the situation. I called my backup plan- my sis. She was able to get onto NOAA’s website and told me that the cone had shifted more to the west. This was a good sign for us. This helped lift my spirits!

We made it to Savannah by 8:30 pm due to DH pretending he was running the Grand Prix and pushing 85-90 mph the entire time (thank you lord for no cops!). Along the way, I also had managed to lose my left contact, which freaked me out since I only have one pair right now. I found it though, stuck to our Trip Ticket from AAA!

We did pass many electrical/utility trucks heading north that were no doubt helping out those in need in FL. Bedtime comes for us in the Ramada Inn before NOAA’s update at 11 pm.

can you really use them.........thanks for your beginning of your trip

We never really stopped at the discount place. It just amazed me how many billboards there were. I mean, those things don't come cheap!!! They MUST get their money from somewhere...

I don't trust those discount outlets. For me, it kinda takes away from the disney magic, ya know?
