You all were so helpful with my last post. We contacted my DH's oxy. supplier. In the past they lent us a portable unit to take to Orlando with us. When we asked about getting the oxy. unit (The M-6) for use they told us we needed to get the dr's prescr. We can do that..(right now we have no way of being away from the house for a couple of hours without having a tank with us). We have a huge concentrator here in the house and a tank that stands about 3 feet tall that he puts in the back seat of the car.
When we questioned his oxy. provider about taking it (the M6) to Florida with us - they said they do not have a provider down there. I am not understanding any of this..He has been with this company for 18 months - does this mean we can't change providers? We contacted another company and they said because we've been with this company for 18 months they could not help us.
Tomorrow he has an appointment with the doctor and feels like he will get a prescription to use the M6. Up until now, he has not needed to use the oxy. as he must now..he has COPD.
I am totally lost in this maze of things...If the M6 uses oxy. tanks..how do we get from here to Florida if you can't take the tanks on the plane? If the company he uses does not serve Florida..what do we do?
Thank you again for all your help. This is such a worry...barb

You need to ask your Dr. for an RX for a POC (portable oxygen concentrator) these do not use tanks, but rather concentrate the needed o2 from room air. Then contact your provider for the POC. It seems many ins. cover this. if they don't you can rent one. remember for the airline you need to look at their website to find if you need a form filled out by the DR. Most airlines require this and enough batteries to cover flight time plus extra. If you get a POC to take, you will not need a provider in Florida. I find it hard to believe you cannot change providers, My Mother switched providers after 2 years just so she could have a poc instead of tanks, but we live in Maryland, don't know if the rules are different elsewhere.

Krisnme - they do lend us a portable one like you're talking about to take. But it's pretty big and has wheels to pull it with. We were hoping to be able to have a smaller unit that he could take (carried like a back pack) so he'd be able to get around and do things. I don't understand about the changing providers either..and we're still waiting to hear from the company.
thank you - and have a great day! barb

Don't know of any backpack size poc's. my Mothers is about 18" high and weighs about 10-15 lbs. it is a sequel equlipse 2 (google it) is this what you had before? or what you are looking for? Others here may know of smaller units, but the only really small o2 delivery I've seen is people who carry a mini tank in their bag or backpack. BTW we took bungee cords and attached the sequel to the back of my mom's ECV and then just pulled it along when we went on rides. really not too unmanageable. she has medicare and they cover it. she no longer uses the large POC at home, just the portable, it is much quieter.
