We are traveling to England in August. :cool1: We are spending one night in York (haven't booked that yet), two nights at Augill Castle (Kirkby Stephen), and then we were thinking one night in or near Oxford, before we spend 9 nights in London. We are traveling with two young boys ( 5 1/2 and 9) who love traveling.

Any suggestions of places to stay or eat in York and in or near Oxford would be greatly appreciated. If you have a better suggestion of places to stay between Augill Castle and London, we are open to any ideas.

Thanks in advance for your help.

When we visited Oxford we stayed at a four pillars hotel, it had a swimming pool and nice restaurant with a small park and play area a short walk away. The fields by at horses etc and it was a 10 min walk into the city.

I can't help with where to stay but would suggest if you have chance you stop for a meal at The Eagle and Child pub in Oxford which is where a group of writers called The Inklings including C S Lewis and Tolkien used to meet in the Rabbit room. We had a lovely meal there last summer and even managed to get a seat in the Rabbit room.

York has a restaurant called 'Betty's Tea Rooms' not far from York Minster, there will be a queue to get in but it shouldn't take long, it's very quaint and nice for a meal or just a nice cuppa with a cream cake.

I have read about Betty's. Any nice, yet not too expensive accomodations to recommend?

'Fraid not, I live less than an hour away from York so overnight accomodation has never been needed. I do have a friend who went to University there, she may not know of any but I know she visits York often to catch up with friends so i'll ask her.

I stayed in the Novotel in York a couple of times and liked it. A friend from work stayed in the Moat House there a few times as well . These are both chain hotels so you can google them to get info

The Pitt Rivers museum in Oxford is worth a visit. It has a collection of archaeological findings from a vast amount of cultures.
And shrunken heads, if you're into that kind of thing. ;)
