I'm still a little lost on the ins and outs of the DVC!

Question...if you own one resort and add on another how do the points work then? for example..you already own 160 points at AKV (11 month booking) and add on 50 Vero Beach...would the vero beach 11 month window only extend to those 50 points or to the total of 210?

When you combine points for a reservation, they retain their home resort status, so in this example you could only book at 11 months at Vero Beach on those 50 VB points. You could add to/alter your reservation at 7 months using points from another resort.

If you want to book a resort in the 11-month window you must pay for that reservation with points from that resort. Once you are inside the 7-month window you can book a resort with any points you wish to use.

So if you purchase a 50-pt add on at VB, you will have just those points to use at the 11-month window at VB. You can use banking and borrowing to accumulate up to 150 VB points if you plan to book there only every other year or every third year. You can also transfer in VB points from another member and use those at the 11-month window regardless of whether you actually own any VB points yourself or not. But you cannot use points from any other resort to book VB 11 months out so if you wanted to use your AKV points you would have to wait until you are 7 months or less from check in.

It can get a little complicated depending on the size of the contracts. We have 4 home resorts, because we like them at different times of year and for different types of stays (short or marathon). For us its a way to ensure a stay at several different places with the 11 month window. We do have to keep a eye on what type of room, at which resort and what time of year. Took some time, but is kinds of habit now.

How about if you have points at two different resorts with two different use years. Can you still combine those two for a reservation made at the 7-month window?

There are a couple of things you can do in this situation. You can book a reservation for the first nights of your stay with points from one contract and book a second reservation for the remaining nights with the other contract and then have the two reservations linked so that you don't have to change rooms part way through your stay. Your other option is to transfer points from one contract to the other and then you can use them as one pool of points. You only get one transfer per UY (in or out, not both) so you will use up your one transfer for each contract when you do this.

Thanks Lisa. Just to make sure I have this right:

Different use years, two different resorts - have to make two different reservations and then combine them - can only do this at the 7 month window or less.

Different use years, same resort - have to make two different reservations and then combine them but can do this at the 11 month window.

Can't combine points from two different use years for a single night in either scenario.

If this right? Do people usually try to get subsequent add-ons or resales for their original use year or is it not that big of a deal?

Thanks,
Jeff

The reservations are linked but they aren't really combined. They are still two separate reservations but by linking them, the room assigner will know that it's really one stay and should put you in one room for the entire stay.

If you are booking a stay at one of the two resorts you own, you can book part of it at 11 months using points from the contract you own at that resort and then book additional nights at 7 months using the other contract. If you are booking a stay at a resort you do not own then you have to wait until 7 months out to book any of the nights.

Yes, assuming you are booking at a home resort using home resort points. Your other option is to transfer some points from one contract to the other (which you can do once per UY) so that you end up with enough points in one contract to book your entire stay from that contract.

If you have contracts with different use years, they are completely separate contracts with different membership numbers. Your two contracts are as separate from one another as your contract is from mine. So if you need to combine points to book a single night, you would have to transfer points from one contract to the other.

If you purchase additional points through Disney they will only sell you the same UY as you already own. The new contract becomes an "add on" to your master contract, with the same base contract number and an extension one digit higher than your master or last add on. For instance if you your master contract is 12345.000, your first add-on will be 12345.001, and the next will be 12345.002, etc. A master and its add-ons are like one pool of points but still keep their resort affiliation so you cannot combine them until 7 months out if they are from different resorts.

If you wanted to buy more points from Disney but want a different UY then you would have to purchase a new master contract of 160 points.

I do this frequently since I have 4 different master contracts with 3 different use years and multiple resorts. When I make ressies after the 7 month mark, I have never had to make any arrangements such as transferring when using points from the different contracts. Also, I never have to check in and out or change rooms. One ressie, one KTTW card for entire length of stay. They don't split up a single night stay using the multiple contracts, but they do use them for combining whole nights. They can link them together.
