owner of beauty parlor - tip?

Need a quick answer, taking my mother to have her hair fixed in a couple of hours. The shop is a one person shop, the stylist is the owner. Is it still the norm to not tip when the stylist is also the owner of the shop?

I would not tip her normally....but with it being right before Christmas I would probably give her a tip this time for the holiday. I would probably say when I handed it to her "Here's a little something extra for the holiday's. Thanks for the great job. Merry Christmas". That way she won't necessarily expect it in the future.

Traditionally, it's not proper to tip the owner of the salon. In actual practice, if you choose to tip, go ahead. If she refuses it, don't push.

Yes, still at home. The shop is only a few minutes from our house so we will not be leaving until 11:45 for a 12:00 appointment. Hopefully Mom will be satisfied with her visit. This shop specializes in older ladies' hair services. Mom has reached an age and lack of mobility whereby it is difficult for her to wash and blowdry her own hair. I "hate" working with hair so my sweetheart of a husband suggested he give Mom a holiday gift of "a year's supply of paid hair appointments". What a great guy! My mother is the type who would never pay to have her hair washed and set but she will accept gift certificates for the service (providing it is from my husband and not from me).
