Own vs. Rent

DH rented our home for four years before he bought it. Now he's wishing he would have bought it at that time. It would be much closer to being paid off.

We rent. Dh is in the military, and we have never lived in any one city for more than three years (we are starting our 4th year in DFW, and that's a record!).

We feel it is pointless, and financially irresponsible, to buy a home, since we will not have enough time to build equity in it to make it profitable for us to sell.

Not to mention the stress of constantly having to buy and sell homes, and what would we do if the house hadn't sold by the time we had to be in a new city?

So we rent. And we will do so until dh retires and starts a second, logistically permanent, career.

We had been renting a horrible place, but recently moved into a very nice 4br, 2ba, with 2 car detached garage and a nice yard, in a very well kept neighborhood, for just under $1000/month. Which is a very good deal, in this area.

We currently rent a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom, 2 living room, big kitchen, 2 car garage with very large yard and a big shed in back house... we pay $995 per month.. we would love to buy and hope to buy this house.. we have some credit issues to work out with a bankruptcy so at this time we do what we have to.. but personally I do like not having to worry about something if it breaks down, we leave that up to someone else--- our house is twice the size of the last house we were renting and its a little over $100 more per month and 3 streets over..We do however hope to own one day

We bought our house 16 years ago. We pay for a mortgage less than most people pay for rent, $700. We have tons of equity and plan to "move up" in the next two years and maintain our low payment because our house is worth very close to 3x what we paid for it. Had we invested in bonds, stocks or any funds 16 years ago instead of buying a house, we would have lost lots of our $$$$. Real estate, well purchased, is a sound investment.

until this week (we're moving 7/1) - my dh and I lived in a 3 bedroom house, 2 full baths, kitchen, living room, basement, river view for only $700 month rent. we're now moving to an amazing townhouse - 3 bedroom, 1 and 1/2 bath, fireplace, full kitchen and living room for $925/month with pool and tennis courts. so renting has been good to us.
