Own BWV--Thinking about Buying OKW

Just stayed at OKW and we absolutely love this resort! We currently own 170pts at BWV, and trying to brainstorm ways to possibly change to OKW. Here is the specifics on what I'm thinking about:

  1. We will be traveling in early-May now (we used to travel in fall), so this seems much easier for the 7-month window. I booked this trip in January, so availability 'seems' to be easier this time of year.
  2. We like the 1-bed at OKW, but we would be about 50pts short each year from our BWV contract--which I thought about just renting those points until we decide on buying OKW
  3. Looking at the prices right now, I would make very good money on BWV--BUT I would also have to buy the OKW points on an inflated (current) market
  4. How tough is to get the 2057 contract term---as if I'm going to re-buy something, I'd like to get the longer term

Any other advice is appreciated. While we love BWV, we much prefer the layout and vibe at OKW as our kids get older. We always rent a car, so the proximity to the parks is not an issue.

Given your proposed travel times and 1 bedroom preference, my advice is to just add on points at OKW to get the total you need. Don't sell BWV and pay commission, and then go through the hassle of purchasing to get the number you need for OKW.

Get the same use year and easily combine points at 7 months. Unless you want a GV, you don't need 11 month booking for what you prefer to book.

That was something I wondered about.....if I bought an extra 50 points, that would just 'add' to my overall total at 7-months. Thank you for answering that!!!

I was going to suggest what @CarolMN did. You might not be able to find a 50-point extended OKW contract in your use year on the resale market. You might need to go direct for this.

Another positive for buying direct points is that you can use them at the new resorts. I don't know how long you've had your Boardwalk points, but if they're old enough, you could use them at new resorts too. It'd be nice if all your points could be used at all the resorts.

I would add on 50 direct OKW points and keep your BWV points. Also if you do not have a blue card yet, the 50 direct gets you closer to the blue card.

I came in literally a couple months before they discontinued Blue Cards for Resale, so I'm good there. But yes, I have already started looking at 50pt contracts on resale.

So your resale is good for blue card and staying at new resorts. I would buy OKW direct for the 50 points and at 7 months would be able to use all points at all resorts if desired.

I agree with previous posters, you seem better off just buying a small contract at OKW. The beauty of owning at BWV is that you get a serious advantage at the 11 month booking mark, where OKW’s advantage is less from that perspective (Unless booking a GV). Might make more sense for you to buy your 50 OKW direct, so you get the ‘57 expiration and you’ll get your UY.

Are your kids in love with OKW? Twenty one years ago we could have bought OKW or BWV.....to this day we say what a great choice we made.BWV !!!!..I wanted to wait and buy WLV(Boulder) at the time....Dont sell BWV....the ease of walking and boating to 2 parks...especially our grandkids are now adults...The 12 in our family never want to stay anywhere but BW......just add on at OKW...it is lovely we stayed in Feb...I traded some points with a friend......

They are older now than in my profile picture, lol. One is 19, and the other is 14--and they both loved OKW on our trip a couple weeks ago. Maybe because they have literally grown up at BWV their entire lives, and liked the change?

If you sell your BWV, you'd lose the Blue Card, if that means anything to you. So, I think you're doing the right thing by looking for 50 points in resale.

I would just add we don't know what blue card will look like in a couple years time. I would possibly hold until we get out the other side of current restrictions.

I would look to strip as many points from your contract as possible so borrow up to the 50% cap and you could always do a point transfer to get a few extra points for the next year or two. Remember you can get transfer points use some this year and then bank points for next year.

Then in 3-4 years time you can sell your BWV contract before the price really drops and buy OKW at that point.

We're in the exact opposite situation. Have 150 OKW points that we want to switch to BWV (hoping to increase to 170-180). I wonder if we can just swap contracts, we'd pay the difference in value?

I’d keep BW since it’s also holding benefits other than location for you. And who knows... maybe your kids prefer BW area again as young adults.

If you had more points, I would definitely consider--but I need around 230 OKW, and I would lose my blue card if I sold those BWV points (which I wouldn't mind for the right point total). I've been looking on the Resale sites, and I cannot believe what BWV is selling for right now!! I bought it resale (before the blue card policy) for like $87/pt about 5-6 years ago!

Since BWV and OKW both expire at the same time to keep things simple I would add on 50 points direct at BWV. This will keep things simple (this is from a member that has up to 6 different contracts).
If you book at the 11 month window (not holidays) at BWV you will be able to book OKW unless things really change in the DVC world. We don't care for BWV but as previously pointed out as your children age it might be a better choice.

If you buy OKW direct, the points expire in 2057. On the resale market, there are contracts that expire in 2042 and occasionally, some that expire in 2057.

If you think about selling your BWV contract I would be interested
