Overpriced balloons?

We needed one with the pink Mickey inside and all the person on Main Street had were the regular mylar ones so they sent us to Town Hall. We used the balloon to announce that baby #2 was a girl :)

That's so cute! I loved all things pink since I found out I was pg with DD :cloud9:

I read in the other thread that the light up ones are $20 and the big Mickey/Minnie mylar ones are $10. For what it's worth, my mom bought my son one of the Mickey head ones and he beat the crap out of it in his room for about 7 months before it finally died. We definitely got our $10 out of that thing.

:rotfl2:
Right? I'm telling you these things have a life all their own. Ours ever survived a 1,300 mile road trip home, and lived FOREVER ! I'm soooo bad.....I secretly ended it's life one day when I decided it had overstayed it's welcome. That giant balloon was always in my face.:rotfl:

Are u allowed to bring the balloon on a plane though? We are flying back home.

Nope, you cannot (unless you let the air out and pack it in your bag). In Disneyland we passed ours off to someone else on our last day because it was still as good as new after three days.

My son would play with it in the hotel room while we got ready in the morning. I thought it seemed like a waste of money, but my DH caved and bought it for him and he did have lots of fun.

ETA: and no, you definitely cannot bring them on rides. You'll have to leave it attached to your stroller.

Your not supposed to fly home with them inflated but we have flown home a couple of years ago on spirit air with a kid that had theirs still inflated with them on the plane ride home. DH and I discussed saying something to the stewardess but didn't want to upset the child so we took the chance that there was nothing bad in it just let it be.

I guess I *am* a cheapskate! :) I think it's a pretty pitiful way to spend $10 but it was nice to buy for DS the one time. I'd rather buy some little souvenirs instead.

Best $10 spent. Buy on first day and use it entire trip, then leave at airport for an arriving family. Our first year that's how we got ours, Disney Magic

ITA it is over priced but i always get 1 ok i get 2 (guilty as charged) Either a mickey and a minnie or a mickey or 1 princess and 1 mickey. (1 boy & 2-girls this way everybody is happy) But we do get to keep ours because we drive so we get to enjoy them about another week or so at home before they are hugging the ground. So I guess that's a plus.

Pitiful? For us it's the best $10 we spend on DD for souvenirs; it's affordable, long lasting and one of her absolute favorite things... She loves balloons all around, not just at Disney.

We have one of the huge glittery tinkerbell ones still floating around her bedroom from our trip last month. I can't think of a single other souvenir in that price range that ever brought her as much happiness. (or me for that matter, every time i see it i break out in spontaneous smiles... It reminds me of Main St because we always buy her balloon there on our last day as we leave the park for our ride home.)

I did not know they could be reinflated though, that's awesome!! I'm definitely checking into that!

We were there last week and paid $10 in Magic Kingdom. They were huge, one was sparkly with Tinkerbell and the other was a green Mickey head in side a clear circular balloon. My dh let them get them. They were a pain. We tied them to the stroller which made ours easy to pick out, but then we just had to let the air out to get them home. I don't even think the kids remember them now.

I just read all the post saying the heads were $13. I didn't do the paying, dh did, so I am prob. wrong saying they were both $10.

Not sure if "allowed" is the right term, but here's our balloon story (copied from my PTR):

So DS12, who was 7 at the time, spotted this balloon and wanted it. Mind you he's been going to Disney since he was a year old and never wanted a balloon before. In fact, none of my kids ever asked for one, so I thought it was an odd request. But he WANTED it. Ok, ok, I said I'd get him the balloon. Walked over the man selling it and it was exorbitantly expensive, IMO, for a piece of latex. But the kid wanted it, and the man assured me it could last for months (in earshot of DS - thanks, Mister, but we fly to WDW - and this was before I had ever read of people on DIS actually deflating these things). Ok, off we go, he's happy as a clam with his balloon, yadda yadda yadda.

Balloon is living happily at the Beach Club for the last few days of our trip, and the time comes to say goodbye. I thought we could just give it to another child and Evan would be over it in a minute. I mean, after all, he's SEVEN - not three. Nope. He wasn't having it. He told me he would bring it home. I said, if you can get it on the plane, you can bring it home - figuring for sure there was no way it was going home with us.

Now we had gotten a great deal on an early morning flight home, but I did not want to pay BC prices to just wake up and leave. So we checked out, left our bags at bell services and decided to do the parks until close and then stay at the MCO Hyatt. The CM at bell services said, I don't think you are going to be able to bring home that balloon. He looked like this: :confused3, but Evan was adamant he would. Off to MCO later in the evening, balloon enjoyed a night at the Hyatt, and early the next morning, after we had checked in, Evan proudly marched up to security with the balloon in his hand. The TSA guy looked like this: :confused3. But he finally decided he wasn't chancing it through the x-ray machine and carried it through himself. We waited for our plane with throngs of other kids fresh from WDW. Surprisingly, none of them had giant Mickey balloons. So it comes time to board. He proudly marches down the aisle of the plane, getting a few looks here and there, and finds his seat and proceeds to try to stuff balloon under the seat. It pops up and hits the ceiling. He tries again. Same result. By now two flight attendants are looking like this: :confused3 So one pulls me aside and says it's not going to fit under the seat and we can't have a balloon floating around the plane. Reasonable enough to me - maybe she could mention that to Evan. He looks at her with his big brown eyes and flashes his dimples and next thing you know, she and I are making room in the overhead bin and literally SHOVING this balloon in there. I was positive it would pop. It squeaked and screeched and bam, we slammed the overhead bin. I was hoping no one would need to try to get in there! Then she looks at me and whispers in my ear, it's going to explode at 10,000 feet. Ugh. I turned to the guy sitting next to me and said, If you hear a loud boom, don't panic.

So we take off. No loud booms, but I was trying to prepare Evan that there was a pretty good chance it was not going to still be in one piece when we got home. He assured me it would be. :sad2:

We landed at JFK, I carefully opened the overhead bin, and out floated Mickey!! :worship:

Evan proudly grabbed his balloon and marched back up the aisle. The pilot came out of the cockpit looking like this: :confused3 and said, how did that make it through the flight??

And the answer to that, must be, the magic of Disney :wizard:

The balloon went on to live in his room for two more happy months until Evan turned 8 and announced he was too old for balloons and popped it! :rotfl2:

ETA: It was this balloon:

That it such an incredibly sweet story, i got all teary eyed as i read it. Talk about pixie dust!! What a brave little determined boy you are raising, thank you so much for sharing!

I get a red one for my Phillies every trip. We keep it in the room and then let it go from the walkway bridge at BLT before we leave for home. If there is a child waiting to buy one when I get mine I always pay for it to spread some Disney Magic. The last time I paid for two kids. I was glad they were getting the $10.00 ones. LOL. Although I had enough put aside if they had wanted the $20.00 ones. I hope at least one of the kids remembers this and pays it forward one day when they get older. :goodvibes

Just an FYI, balloons are not allowed in Animal Kingdom or Animal Kingdom Lodge because they are a danger to the animals. So you may want to reconsider buying a balloon if you are staying at AKL. :)

I REALLY want one of these balloons (no not for one of my kids, but for me). I've always wanted one and my parents would never get me one. I'm stil trying to figure out how I'm going to get a balloon and go on rides.

My kids are too old for strollers now, so what does a person do with a balloon during rides if there's no stroller to tie it to?

As someone who has a stroller and buys balloons for her kids: Buy it on the way out of the park and enjoy it in your hotel room.

Balloons on strollers look nice, but they are a giant pain. They're huge, constantly hit you in the face, and otherwise prevent park enjoyment. We buy our balloons on the way out of the park on day 1, and keep them in the hotel room for the rest of the trip.

I got my balloon. Well really dd6 got a balloon yesterday. We were standing in line another little girl gave it to her. The girl said someone else gave it to her. I think she was tired of carrying it around in the rain. Dd couldn't have been happier. Oh, and on the rides they take the balloon for you and it's waiting at the end for you. We won't take it to any other parks cuz we all got tired of being hit by it.

And if your balloon deflates during your stay supposedly they replace it with a new one for free!

This is absolutely true. We brought back the pieces of our balloon the day after we bought it, and it was replaced with a smile.

Poor balloon didn't stand a chance with CRT handing out swords.....

We deflated the balloons and brought them home and had a hard time finding someone to fill it. Finally Party City did it, they were our 4th try. The Helium in the MK must be of a higher quality than Party city because it never floated as high again. We had the Tinkerbell balloon with the flashing light inside, and I think that was just a tad too heavy for the low quality He.

Please don't let them go :( the pieces fall and the bright Coles are attractive to birds that eat them.
