Hi :wave2: I was just wandering if any Canadians have been over shopping in Buffalo this month? We are taking DD over on Monday for the day pluss Sunday she will be 14. She wants to pick up a few neat school supplies and clothes. For me, anything Tinkerbell, Lime green(organizing stuff), scrapbooking and I hope to find some clothes too.
Any good deals. We are heading to-Walmart,Target,and Big Lots are the main ones.

Hey! I'm not Candian but I am a Buffalonian. You may want to hit our outlet that's right by the border or a mall close by with the JCPenneys, Sears, and other dept. stores. For scrapbooking hit a JoAnn fabrics or an ACMoore!

Enjoy your mother/daughter time!

If you start in the Cheektowoga area first.........

There you will find the Walden Galleria Mall, across the street is the Wegmans and Burlington Coat Factory, a little down a ways is the K-Mart over the bridge is the Target.

Head towards transit road and along there you will find A Big Lots and a lot of strip malls. There is a Craker Barrel there too. Or you can eat the the Country Buffet.

Have Fun!

What kind of store is "A Big Lots" :confused3

It's close out items deeply discounted.

I used to go there after Christmas, Halloween, Easter to get great deals on seasonal items.

Try this, it might give you an idea.

You claim your $25.00 as per usual! ;) :rolleyes1 ;)

I do it all the time and just claim the stuff ( mostly, I have been known to carry a new purse and wear new shoes home ) however, it is still cheaper than a hotel night and meals for another day. It's so much fun!
I stay away from buying booze and cigarettes because that is really what they are looking for. The most I have had to pay is $20 Canadian.

My MIL's best friend also wears dreadfully old clothes when she is here for a shoping trip. She has the girls at the store cut the tags off and just throws out the old clothes and wears a new outfit back as well.

I think you're allowed 75.00 per person per day...dh and I always go down and that is what we claim...we have even spent 300.00 in a couple of hours and been told to have a nice day...come back again...I guess it all depends on who you get and what kind of mood their in....

Less then 24 hours you have $0 duty and tax free. You must be gone at least 24 hours. And no alcohol or tobacco allowed. It's the officer's discretion whether you are required to pay tax.

All items made in USA are duty free. So figure on paying your PST and GST. Usually on many items you still come out way ahead.

They wont tax grocery items "if" they do pull you over to pay for duty ect. However if you are truthfull with them, or as close as you would like to come, Ive found that they generally let you go.

That's because there is no duty on items made in the USA (like most gorceries would be) and many grocery items are not subject to GST or PST therefore they cannot charge you.

We go over a couple times a year and we have yet to pay duty!! We always buy lots of kids clothes at the Prime Outlets and usually keep our "claim" under $100 and they usually tell us to have a nice day. One time we had a female border guard that was unusually chatty and at the end of our pleasant conversation she hands us a slip and tells us to go inside to pay our duty! DH goes inside and the guy asks him what he bought and he says kids clothes and the guy rips up the slip and says to have a nice day!! :rotfl: We usually tell them that we have 95 dollars in kids clothes and 20 dollars in groceries and we never have had a problem. I make sure the receipts that I have total $95 dollars too!!! :smooth: Even if we ended up paying the savings would still be there plus it is so much fun!!!!! :thumbsup2

I went over with my 2 DD's last Monday. We go over about ever 2 months sometimes more. Rarely do we have to pay anything when we return to Canada. Last week we spent $165 US I told them how much I spent and they let us go. My friend went over in June and spent $400 and they let her go as well. So it hard to say how much they will let you away with since you are not allowed anything for a one day trip. In my opinion, I think it depends on who is in the car (a mom and kids VS. a car load of women with credit cards) and how many hours you have been in the US. We will say for about 5 hours and that will include going out for lunch. I also think that if you have bought groceries they don't care about that.

Anyway, the exchange rate right now is 1.13 so I say---SHOP IT UP!!!!!! I'm going back this week.

We have never had a problem with shopping a few times a year. We are honest with everything we buy and have receipts for everything. We declare it all including the groceries (we buy Pepsi One every few months as we can't buy it here) and have the receipts all ready for the border guards when we cross and have yet to pay duty. We are always ready to do so though and are always still cheaper even if we would have to. You can't beat the prices at Steve and Barry's for back to school clothes everything in the store is like $9.99 or less!! My DH and DS will be going there this weekend to shop.

I agree with the above poster. We always have the receipts in hand and are prepared to pay if we have to. I figure that even if we had to pay duty we are still ahead of the game. Especially, if you factor in all the times we didn't pay duty (which is maybe once in the last 6-7 years).

I probably just jinxed myself---right? :rolleyes2
