Well, this has been the week of all weeks for our family to be sick. We have had just about every kids sickness this week. To top it off, my DH was admitted to the hospital yesterday for pneumonia. So, just when I think we are getting better, DS starts crying because his ear hurts. Of course, the dr.'s office is closed. I do not really want to go to the ER for an earache, and we do not have any urgent care clinics. Has anyone here tried, with success, the over the counter earache medicines? I know Similison (sp) has one, and I am sure there are others. If you have any other advice, I would be willing to try it!! I just gave DS some Tylenol, and that has seemed to help for now. Let's see what happens next hour!?!?!?!?!?!

Go to CVS where ever even Kroger and look for Sweet oil. Maybe near the drugs or by the infant isle. Warm up the bottle in a coffee mug of water for just 50 seconds or so, and take a ear dropper and drop some of the sweet oil in your dd/ds ear. Have child lay on the good ear and let the oil soak in. I think the oil pushes out the liquid in the ear thus relieving the pressure.

The best OTC ear ache drops in my opinion are Similasan......we always keep a bottle in the house. It does wonders!!

I've had several patients mention sweet oil. So, it must work for some people. Didn't work for me, but could be worth a try.

I tried to tough it out because I didn't want to be at the doctor's on Christmas Eve. So, I ended up in the ER on Christamas Day. Bad, bad patient! Got percocet from the doctor, but my eardrum finally burst on the way home (not a big deal, btw) and that was that. No more pain. :)

I also read somewhere that a decongestant would help with an ear ache. Not sure of the science behind that, but it has helped my dd in the past. Hope you all feel better soon.

I've been advised to have tubes put in my ears because I get so many ear aches & infections. (But I just don't want to. :goodvibes ) I've tried the drops & they don't seem to help me. I usually take a decongestant to try and dry up the fluid, and some Tylenol or Ibuprofen for the pain.

Have to agree with above poster on the Similison . My DH came down with a horrible one over a weekend I posted this exact question. Someone mentioned the Similison . Bought it and he was able to get some sleep..!!!

Sure can. One of the docs I work with just got another set of tubes. Had them done right in the ENT's office!!!

Unfortunately adults can get tubes. I probably should. I just had the exact problem you're describing a few weeks ago. I'm still not feeling better. The one highlight is I'm too dizzy to eat & I've lost 10 pounds.

You can either have the tubes placed in the doctor's office (which I hear is very painful) or as a day procedure under general anasthesia (which I always get sick from), so I can't make up my mind what to do.
