Went to the ER the other day after my Urologist said too after I was having horrible back pain on and off for at least a month - then boom - very little urination for 2 days.. CT done found ovarian cysts causing the issue.

Anyone know anything about these?

I'm off to follow up with my GYN tonight, hopefully have some answers..

Yup. Get them looked at. I lost my right ovary to one the burst and required surgery. Even with high dose fertility treatments the remains of that ovary never produced.

They can be controlled with simple birth control pills.

Thanks. I feel like im going back in time if they give me birth control. 2 kids and married 21 years. :) who needs birth control!! Hehehehe

Okay. Ready to scream. Like my OrIginal Post said ....
Got an appt with my gyn in their other office tonight. New doc for me.
Spoke to me for 2 seconds. 30 second exam. Says no cysts. Get sono.
Cant get in for sono till Friday.

Ask him for a medicine to take edge off. Was given Naprosyn in ER by ER DOC. HE SAYS IM NOT GIVING YOU anything. 4x4 cm cyst shouldt cause back pain go see Orthopaedist.

Im really upset and annoyed at the same time.

Went for some help And this is what I get.

I had ovarian cysts off and on several years ago. My pain was in my lower abdomen, on each side. Once it was so bad on the right side that I went to the ER thinking it was my appendix. Turned out I had a very large cyst that was starting to burst. It grew back, along with one on the left side. I ended up having surgery to remove them. An ultrasound is the best diagnostic tool for cysts (the internal kind, unfortunately). My doctor couldn't always feel the cysts during the exam, but they showed up clearly on the ultrasound. I did not have any problems with urination or back pain as you described. It was mostly just pain in the front, down low.

I have dealt with ovarian cysts for years. Did the ER doctor tell you what kind of cyst? And they didn't do an ultrasound in the ER?

Mine always caused pelvic pain, not back pain, but I'm not saying that they couldn't cause back pain.

Time for a new GYN?

In the ER they only did a CT Scan and said you have an ovarian cyst, no kidney stones, which I honestly thought was causing all this discomfort.

They said Follow up with your GYN. Which I thought I was doing.

Yes, TIME FOR A NEW GYN!!!! I will get the sono done on Friday anyways, then find a new GYN, so time isn't wasted waiting for appts to be sent for a sono anyways.. might as well just get it done and have the records transferred to the new one. Good idea?

I just didn't like being told that my pain isn't there and can't be caused by this.

He was just a realll... well... D-bag! or d-head! hehehe
:) :)

11 years ago, I had a laparatomy (8 inch incision) to remove a 10-cm cyst from my left ovary. Weird thing was, I had no pain with it at that size. In fact, I can't say I've ever had pain, except for severe cramping for the first day or two of my period.

Now I am awaiting surgery for the SAME EXACT THING. Yep, the cyst came back! However...when I had my first ultrasound in September, the cyst was 10 cm and I had a definite hard spot in my abdomen. Both DH and I could clearly feel it. Second ultrasound in November...hard spot still there, but now the cyst was 6.5-7 cm. Now...I'm having ANOTHER ultrasound this coming Tuesday, because the hard spot is completely gone. Hoping that it shrunk...maybe the incision will be smaller this time, or maybe they can do a laparoscopy instead (I do have four 1-2 cm fibroids that also need to be removed now as well, as they have caused me to bleed since this past August). But again...I've had no pain :confused3 The surgeon insists I must be in pain, but I'm not!

ETA: Where is your back pain? I ask because when I have back pain that's on and off, and little urination, I find it's a slight kidney infection. I just lay off the caffeine and drink a lot of water and juice (at doctor's suggestion...having been through it several times in the past). It goes away on its own after a few days. I find that my cysts make me go MORE, because they're pressing on my bladder. *Hugs* to you...hope you find out soon!

I have PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome). I'm on birth control to stop the cysts from forming. When I'm not on birth control, I have really bad pain/cramps in my lower abdomen. The pain is so bad that it will drop me to my knees and put me in the fetal position.

I hope you feel better soon and get some answers.

Hi..
I really thought Kidney stones, really!!!! Yes, back pain with little urine for 2 days, uro suggested ER.. CT scan no stones, just cyst. But pain is still there.. Naprosyn/Naproxen ain't workin', that's for sure.

I do drink alot of water and only 1 iced coffee per day, I lay off the tea now due to being anemic.

I don't know what to do, I'm sooo annoyed right now at my GYN.

I'm calling tomorrow to vent my frustrations!

When I experienced my first ovarian cyst, I didn't know that was it. I woke up around 1:00am in excrusiating pain; throbbing pain in my right ovary, (I thought it was my kidney), nausea, fever, and rapid breathing. Apparently my cyst had burst at that moment, but I didn't know until a few hours later at the ER.

Luckily the ER doc said my cyst burst but there was no damage to my ovary, and the burst cyst would clear out on it's own. (Which it did.) He gave my morphine while I was at the hospital. I was then given instructions to rest and not move around for the next 3 days.

That was years ago, and apparently once you experience ovarian cysts you are always prone to get them. The best advice I was given is to take Midol, or Pamprin at first signs of cramps. (Trust me. I can tell the difference between a regular cramp and an "ovarian cyst" cramp.) And apply heat pad to area.

This always seem to keep my cysts at bay. Plus my regular doctor switched brands of birth control pills, so while I still get cysts, I don't get them as often. And the cysts are not as severe as they used to be.

Oh boy, sometimes these problems us women have to deal with! :headache:

I get them all the time, unfortunately. Several times they have been described as the size of a jumbo egg,:scared1:

However, they always seem to disappear on their own. I also have several fiboid tumors on my uterus. Neither have ever caused me back pain, usually only pelvic pain. I would definitely see a new doctor.

I had an ovarian cyst the size of an orange about 8 years ago. The only reason I found out about it was because we were trying to get pg and I had a transv**inal ultrasound to see why we were having trouble. I had no pain or other symptoms from it, luckily. I tried a month of BC pills, but was told if it didn't go away in a month or two on the pill it would probably need to be surgically removed. I ended up having it removed laproscopically with minimal down time.

My advice would be to get a second opinion. When I had a cyst way back when I was 24, I went to my gyn to complain about diminishing periods. Doctor was a man and said, and I quote, "you should be happy. Most women would like their periods to go away." I never went back to him. I went to a female doctor some time later who told me I had a cyst the size of an orange, and that they would use birth control pills to try and reduce it. Three months later it didn't shrink, so I had surgery. By the time they got inside the cyst was all twisted up with the ovary and they had to remove that too. They told me not to worry, that the left ovary would pick up the slack. I stayed on the pill forever to try to avoid growing another cyst. It worked. When I was 37 I decided I wanted to have a baby, so I went off the pill and got pregnant no problem.

I'm 50 now and have only had female gyns, and I swear by that strategy. I think that a male doctor just doesn't know what it's like to feel a cramp or put up with hormonal changes, or any of the things a woman feels. People have argued this point with me saying does that mean you can only have an oncologist that has had cancer, and so forth. Of course I don't believe that, but there is something about the female condition that makes me feel like I get more understanding from someone who can have the same "female" medical conditions that I do.

Get a second opinion.

I'm stepping down off my soapbox now.

Nah. Stay on the soapbox :):) hehehe

I tell you I was mortified when he told me that cysts can't cause back pain. When I know that women I know have back pain.

Well I'm not making it up and really didn't want to spend my whole Monday for 10 hours laying around at ER..
So to be told you can't have that pain he is just nuts.

I will be having a second opinion and getting a sono Friday morning
I'll take it from there. And to be personal he didn't even exam me like he should have. 30 second internally isn't a good exam Im sorry. TMI!

He was just a jerk. Bottom line.

My pain might not have to do with a cyst he might be right, could be a cyst they say and muscle pain but the ER guy don't know.

He said he won't treat me with bc pills until soon comes back.

I'm assuming 4x4 is a "small" cyst?

I've had multiple cysts and they can most certainly cause back pain and the pain can come and go depending on what it is rubbing or bumping inside.

I've had them burst which is intense but quick and then the pain is more achy than anything else.

Take some Advil if you're uncomfortable. Hopefully you'll get to the bottom of it soon.

I actually had one rupture when I was 12! It to date is the worst pain I have ever experienced. My pain was really low pelvic area, I couldn't stand up straight for a couple of days. I've been on BCP for a long time and I've never had another one.

It was really embarrassing to miss middle school for a ruptured ovarian cyst by the way.:sad2:

I agree with that!! I was 13 when I ended up in the ER with what we THOUGHT was appendicitis (high fever, right sided abdominal pain, nausea, etc) and it ended up being a massive ovarian cyst. It hadn't ruptured but it did have to be removed because they were afraid that it would rupture soon.

a month later I was diagnosed with PCOS....I have had 4 cysts removed since then (over the past 9 years). I also have endometriosis. When I get breakthorugh bleeding from my BCP (I don't really get "preiods" b/c i"m on BCP continuously) percocet is my best friend.

I'm stepping down off my soapbox now.

I have worked for GYNs for 10 years, have seen both men and women. Men can be just as sympathetic if not more than women. I prefer a woman over a man. I don't think this has anything to do with the op's situation, that Dr was a jerk, and would have been even if it had been in a woman's body.
